"climate change" (the term employed when the earth stopped warming), without having the slightest idea what they are talking about. Most simply parrot the line about a "so-called "consensus of scientists," without the slightest knowledge of the science or data, or point to extreme weather events as “proof.” Al Gore and Henry Waxman have become masters at this. In fact, 99% of the people who believe in the "global warming crisis" cannot even tell you what the current globally-averaged temperature is, nor how much it may have risen over the past century (or any other time frame for that matter). Nor do they know that the current globally averaged temperature is 1-2 degrees C below what it was during the Medieval Warm Period, when human activity could not have been a factor.

Neither temperatures nor sea level rise are accelerating. Temperatures haven't risen since 1997. And even the U.N. predicts just an 8.5" to 18.5" sea level rise by 2100 (2007 IPCC Report), far below the 20 feet predicted by Al Gore, or the 35 feet predicted by Joe Lieberman in 2002. In fact, sea levels have been rising at a rate of about 7" per century since the end of the last age 12,500 years ago, so the U.N.'s predicted range is likely to fall at the low end.

Weather stations around the world are notoriously unreliable, many placed in locations now near asphalt parking lots, etc., replicating the urban island heat effect. Calculating the globally averaged temperature in an enormously complex task. compounded when scientific frauds like Phil Jones and Michael Mann (of the infamous "hockey stick" graph) hide, and would not supply, their data because it does not support their predetermined conclusions of anthropogenic global warming. This is not surprising, however, since thousands of scientists stand to collectively lose billions in federal research grants if the hoax is exposed (more than $80 billion has already been spent on such research, nearly 500 times what oil companies have spent to fund so-called “skeptics”), a fact totally lost, or grossly misrepresented, by global warming religionists.

The fact is: even if the earth's temperature is rising marginally, from natural forces, it will be far better for mankind than falling temperatures. It will result in higher crop yields and less death around the world. More than twice as many people die of extreme cold than extreme heat.

Contrary to morons such as Al Gore (who will never agree to debate the topic, so fearful is he of getting his clock cleaned), scientific evidence clearly shows that we have had no increase in extreme weather events. Dr. Roger Pielke Jr., Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado, summed up the latest science on weather extremes when he wrote that “There is no evidence that disasters are getting worse because of climate change....There's really no evidence that we're in the midst of an extreme weather era - whether man has influenced climate or not,”
Pielke also explained that the data does not support linking Hurricane Sandy to man-made global warming. “Sandy was terrible, but we're currently in a relative hurricane 'drought'.” But that doesn’t stop politicians from trying to make political hay from them.

The aim is to convince the uninformed that carbon dioxide is the equivalent of carbon monoxide, a highly toxic gas.

Oddly enough, I did write what I meant: I stopped reading. There was no need to read any further.

Quotes are quite a fun concept. You can literally transcribe what someone said, as in; Paul said, "I went to the mall." Or, you can use them as people would in actual dialogue between people. At that point they're referred to as "air quotes." For instance: "I told her I'd "help" her out." It requires an understanding of context. For instance, when I say "properly cleared" I very explicitly mean the person clearing the gun thinks they have done it properly, and would testify to said statement, but in reality they have done something wrong.

The person may honestly believe they have done everything correctly, or they may take shortcuts believing they are still in the right. Most people would refer to using quotes in this sense as being "ironic." Of course, that is technically an improper use of the word, however, it is colloquially correct.

In this case, my quotes would indicated that the gun owner believes they have properly cleared the gun, but in fact, has not. However, the gun owner would claim they "properly cleared" the gun before they shot themselves in the face. Of course, the use of quotes is also to illustrate that those of us who understand that most gun accidents similar to this stems from a lack of respect for the proper mechanics of clearing a firearm for safety.

For the sake of brevity I will say that the major cause of accidents is the owner believes they have "properly cleared" the firearm. Or, if you'd like, you can read the above 3 paragraphs. The point of the written word and the years and years of English education is so we can communicate succinctly, not write novels in a medium where anything longer than 2 paragraphs is dismissed as "too long." (In this case, the quotes are to indicate that the definition of "too long" can obviously be interpreted differently and thus giving a set value would be a gross misrepresentation.)

I haven't handled a pistol since 1983 in boot camp. All I need to do in Oregon to get a CCW is watch a video online, take an online test, pay to download the certificate, and take the certificate to the Sheriff's office for my permit. I wouldn't want me carrying a gun in public, but I could if I wanted to, with virtually no experience or training. Now, guns are not my thing. I don't want one. I'm relatively sane, but if I wasn't, if the world was cruel and oppressive and needed a dark knight, getting a CCW would be just as easy.

This video shows simply and clearly that things very often don't go as you plan when you find yourself in a very stressful and scary situation, and that the training required to perform spontaneously and correctly in such situations must be ongoing, something the vast, vast majority of CCW's would be unable or unwilling to do. Would they have performed better had the "drill" happened when they were told it would happen? Maybe, but that isn't how things unfold in RL now, is it? Sometimes it's an elementary school classroom full of six and seven year-olds, or with smoke bombs in a movie theater, or outside the food court at a mall, or even, like this video, in a lecture hall at a school.

Well, "confronted the shooter" is way over-stating what happened. The guy was standing behind a pillar, trying to decide whether to shoot or not as the killer struggled with his jammed gun. He claims the killer saw him. But did he? This young man doesn't seem to be making it up, he seems genuinely distressed by what happened, not posturing. But I don't know. I'd like to hear from someone other than this young man about what happened.

If it did go down as he says, then I applaud him for not going all testosterone and shooting up the place.
