This has got to be a hard problem to fight; everything they showed is legal under the first amendment. So it seems the only way to fight street harassment is to make it socially unacceptable among macho douchebags.

But the douchebags don't care that what they're doing is distressing, they know that. The whole point is to belittle women who want nothing to do with them.

And yet, I get the impression most large cities in the world don't have this problem. What do they do to keep the dickheads repressed?

If, by "shit boys traditionally will not do often" you mean "shit inappropriate to the macho-image some boys are encouraged to take on", then it's not odd at all. Those are not the boys that generally play RPGs. It's just one example of why geeks are superior to the run-of-the-mill thugs, hoods and jocks in school. Geeks tend to be willing to use their heads, and not just for busting through walls.

It was a fine theory, but I don't think the reverse psychology of saying it's gay to insult gays actually works on homophobes. And teasing them about potentially being gay seems to validate their childish attitude.

As the culture moves away from homophobia being accepted, I almost think those insecure macho men will be relieved. It's got be be exhausting to be that paranoid.

That was pretty awesome. This is the best way to cure the world of homophobia; make every macho showing representative of repressed homosexuality. Awesome.

Ok, for any and everyone who says "we're just too weak": welcome to the hyper-macho culture. For starters, you're right, I know your husband beats you, but seriously, deal with it. Grow the fuck up and get over yourself. Right? No?

The problem with certain forms of abuse is that many recognize they may in fact be participating in it, and to defend themselves from feeling bad, they justify it. For instance, in extreme examples, SLAVERY!

I posted a link to another video which makes the point: when you start dehumanizing the subject of your intentions, it becomes okay because they're just objects. That's the real issue here: these catcalls become, if you want to call it, a gateway drug for dehumanization.

How is being denied a job because of your sex a "suck it up" situation? Oh, you wanted to get the manager position? Well, we gave it to your less qualified male counterpart for more money than we intended to pay you anyway.

Why is there still a pay disparity? Equal work = equal pay? Unless you're female. Not to mention all the women passed over for promotions because they're simply not pretty enough. Or hell, just go to a Hooters . . . or Tilted Kilt, Winghouse or any other establishment that's frequented by males who are simply there because of the "hot chicks". I doubt many of those places could exist on their food quality alone.

While stopping to asshole YouTube comments isn't going to solve women's equalities issues, it will help. Intolerance for intolerance will be the only solution. Letting these YouTuber's harass females (yes, it is harassment, not a compliment) and putting women into uncomfortable situations because you feel like you're giving them compliment will only make matters worse.

For instance, go to a gay club and see how you feel when guys are constantly catcalling you, telling you they'd love to fuck you etc. Trust me, when it happens to you, it's not a compliment. It's damned creepy.

Now, if your female friend did her hair, got a new dress etc and you tell her she looks pretty, that's one thing. Telling a random stranger "Hey beautiful" etc doesn't win you any favors.

This is what I truly dislike about what martial arts have become. No more is it about self defense or mind/body balance, now it's just more macho bullshit.

As with all things, it's not necessarily a law change that need to happen. Laws don't drive the zeitgeist, the zeitgeist drive laws (or should).

People need to be dissuaded from wanting to have guns. In Europe, people don't really want a gun, and don't even see a need for one. Sure, there are hunters and they have guns, and sure you can get one if you're in a dangerous area with bears and shit, but actually getting a gun is when you're hunted by mafia or something like that and you're desperate. Why would you ever want to walk around with a gun? I don't really get it.

Perhaps people have a fantasy about being a hero, where they shoot the bad guy. Everyone has that as a kid; most kids also grow up.

There's something deeply satisfying about firing a gun - power at your fingertips. Control. Maybe it's a control thing. People don't like to be out of control, with a gun they always have something to fall back on to control the situation.

Maybe it's a macho thing, although women carry guns too. I don't know the statistic of it, but I would imagine more men do than women. Men are intrinsically destructive while women are creative - it's our nature. We men beat up our rivals to gain access to that sweetest fruit of all: peach. Perhaps it's an extension of power; an penis extension. Don't pull the trigger, squeeze it tenderly. You are the gun; look down the aim at your target and fire.

Maybe there's some brain vs brawn in it. I would wager good money that as intelligence goes up, gun ownership goes down. No statistics to back it up, but I'd love to see if it's true. Brains are taking over everything - it's the decade of the Nerd. Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams could get all the girls and gets all the admiration in the big world, while Dick McKickaball failed to make the team and married Candace the exotic dancer his friends hired for him on his 21st birthday. But at least he could shoot JJ Abrams in the face with his 4½ inch death stick.

Society doesn't really gain much from guns does it?

It has its own market and thus gets people to move money around with someone around to skim the top. dft said this in point 2 as well. This could be done for worse stuff though - snuff porn has a market; heroin has a market.

Mutually Assured Destruction is always a fun acronym to throw around. If everyone does eye for an eye, the world will go blind, I've heard somewhere. Probably a shitty western or something.

Feelings of security? If I have a gun, do I feel safer from the people around me that may or may not also have guns? I would feel safer in my home, I think. If I feared home invasions. Home invasions are a weird thing; very rare in europe to the best of my knowledge, even though we don't have guns. Seems like something that would only happen if there was an enormous disparity between poor and rich, making the poor desperate (and lazy) enough to want to do a home invasion. If Brian the Aryan Man-God makes 10 million billion $$ a year, and Rommel the Dirty Mexican doesn't get anything because he has to pay child support off his social security and also cover his meth addication, then the chance of Rommel doing a home invasion is greater than if Rommel makes half of what Brian does. Maybe we need to raise the floor, instead of raising the ceiling on the extrema of wealth to lose the desire of guns.

Maybe it's all of the factors at once, and we have someone like the NRA pushing everyone to want all of them. I want security. I'm afraid. I have a small dick. Home invasions happen all the time. Schools get shot by crazies, I need to defend myself.

Primarily they are douche bags. /endsarcasm I say this from years of experience, both good and bad. Plenty of nice ones, but for every good cop there are a couple impatient asshole cop doing an arbitrary job at keeping the peace. But, really, the common denominator is that they are human. So I'm fair in my judgement and so I have decided to point my hate at most humans. Tolerate most people, yes, for the most part. If cops were a showed their humility as public servants, admitting to their poor decisions as they recognized them, then unacceptable behavior can be easily forgiven. Unfortunately pride fucks with even the best of mankind's heads.

Cops shouldn't let their personality quirks inform their decisions as law enforcement. Sort of like rulers should be philosopher kings. It's not realistic to think that this will change all that much over the years, but it is realistic to try and at least confirm to others that most interactions with cops will NOT end in your favor. They will, however, protect the shit out of you when actual f'ed up criminals show up. It's just a shame that (often) they take out the time in between on the common citizens, who could use some firm law enforcement without the macho bullshit.

My judgement is based off of the frequency of my interaction where I either should not have been at fault or was at fault in one way or another and treated as if I were were a hardened criminal, my opinion minimized and was downright insulted by their candid and inappropriate comments. (I was once derided for getting into an accident with my mother's car when I was 19. "You're still driving your mama's car?" That really helped my mental state after climbing from the now upside down wreckage.) There were several occasions where I was completely at fault and, in fact, most of these times I had a fairly nice and patient cop. But the number of bad interactions at inappropriate times outweighs this, so I can only assume that there are more bad cops than good.
