Louis opens new Macbook Air, immediately loses mind.

rancor says...

In an enclosed space like a compact laptop (MacBook Air) you don't need the fan anywhere near the heatsink. Think about a long tube; you can put the fan anywhere in it and the total airflow will be about the same. I'm a bit surprised someone experienced with laptops doesn't know this?

It seems more like he just wanted to rail against Apple products. I've been there, but my rant is usually about the quality control of their hardware.

Judge Barrett isn't worth considering

Mordhaus says...

This has nothing to do with her capability. It never has been. It has to do with people pissed because there is a nominee during this time.

News flash, it doesn't matter if Trump wins or loses. He can nominate someone even after he loses. Until he is replaced, he is THE President of the United States.

No judge is required to have a photographic memory of the Constitution. I bet you could ask SITTING judges on the Supreme Court and have them miss a question. That is what clerks and research people are for.

What this comes down to is two basic things.

1. Merrick Garland never made it onto the court. People are still bitterly pissed off that he didn't. But what they forget is that he WAS nominated and did not get through the process due to a Republican majority. It was perfectly legal and was allowed. It sucks if you wanted him, but that is the way the game works.

2. People are STILL scared that Roe v Wade is going to go bye bye or the ACA is going to get kneecapped. News flash, SCOTUS has been majority Conservative leaning judges for YEARS. When Gorsuch was picked, all I recall hearing was OMG OMG, THE SKY IS FALLING, ROE V WADE IS DEAD! Same thing as when Kavanaugh was picked; although they were pissed about his supposed rape as well, every news site was repeating the mantra about Roe V Wade now dead.

It isn't going to happen. Not at a Federal level. It would be suicide for years. Conservatives, by and large, do not give a fuck about abortion. It's only the squirrelly ultra right wing pricks that care and Republicans sadly have to cater to them verbally to keep their votes. States, yeah, some will pass laws and then those will get turned away from SCOTUS like they have been for a while. The appellate courts will set the precedent on those rulings and they solidly rule for Roe v Wade.

Same thing for the ACA, although personally I wish that would die a fucking quick death. As I've said before many times, that little gem has fucked the value of my family insurance from work into the ground. I didn't get to keep my doctor unless I wanted to pay 2k+ per person per year, because he and a shit ton of other doctors went to Concierge fees to cover the money they were losing under the ACA. Now I have to go to either:

A. Doctor's who have horrible ratings for their practice, ie ones that suck or just don't care.

B. A clinic setup where I 'technically' have a 'family doctor' but in reality I can be bumped to others on staff or, most likely, a PA. There is no feeling that I know my doctor because, even if I do get to see him, they just run me through as fast as possible so they can get another patient in.

I have pre-existing conditions, so I empathize with those who are on the ACA. But the act itself is fucked up beyond repair. It needs to die and get replaced with a true national insurance. If not that, something that lets me go back to feeling like I have a real doctor and not just whoever is johnny on the spot at that moment.

It isn't going to be killed at SCOTUS though, they don't want to legislate. They will let it survive and if you think otherwise you are drinking the liberal koolaid that they are serving to round up voters.

I like the Youtuber and do agree with his other videos. I do not agree with this. I can diagnose a Macbook Pro right now if I had to, even after being away from Apple for around 8 years. But I might need to pull up a damn schematic or reference manual to know how much resistance I should be looking for on the PPbus if it isn't present when trying to power the thing on. If I and everyone else had photographic memories, we wouldn't have reference material. Wikipedia wouldn't exist. This is simply a nitpick because people are worried and still pissed.

Capitalism Didn’t Make the iPhone, You iMbecile

bcglorf says...

From the start of the video: iPhone, Android, macbook, pc, kindle, netflix, facebook, instagram...

The video really feels like a over drawn insistence that people recognize that the American economy isn't a pure capitalistic 100% free market environment. That's something that should really be obvious, and not require being said unless your audience are 12 year olds or idiots. It still stands that compared to other giants of the world in China or Russia, it is still America taking the lead on 100% of the innovations that Rob listed, and by comparison, a far more capitalist oriented economy sets America apart. Heck, even include the EU in there as a slightly more socialist economy than America's, and still low and behold it is America that came out with every single example listed...

Prove Apple wrong about data recovery and get banned

spawnflagger says...

Apple quality has consistently gone down hill after Steve Jobs (could be post-hoc-ergo-propter-hoc fallacy, but whatever).
AppleCare is a must nowadays, backups are a must (iCloud or local)- Apple treats their devices as throwaway, regardless of the cost. They just want you to buy a new one, and sadly most people do.
My 2012 MacBookPro (last model that is field-upgradeable) is a tank, but I won't buy a new one when it dies. I've seen 1/3 of 2018 MacBookPros ($2500) have random lockup issues and need to be replaced.
I'm still trying to get data recovered from my wife's 2015 MacBook (wouldn't turn on 1 day, no drops, no water, just dead).

Steve Jobs Foretold the Downfall of Apple!

DEADMAU5's home music studio is amazing

testlump says...

It's a nice setup, but if 99% of the clubs and festivals you play at don't have Dolby Atmos (think only Ministry of Sound in the UK has it), what's the point? Might as well just stick with the 1200 dollar MacBook.

Apple Campus 2 January/February 2017 Construction Update 4K

Mordhaus says...

Well, Steve was an odd duck. He was a huge asshole, but when it came to people coming up with new and innovative ideas, he would support you into either success or failure (god help you if it was failure though). Once he died, there was a noticeable shift in direction towards conformity and the bottom line.

As an example, one of the managers I worked with had a team that was breaking customer satisfaction records because he had them actually caring about the customer. Unfortunately, it also meant they weren't pulling in the same amount of profit because they weren't trying to ram Applecare contracts down customer's throats, they were also supporting some customers that were just outside their free support, and finally they were using the internal program put in place under Steve that allowed escalation reps to go beyond the norm. Like helping a smaller school set up a mac mini server network without forcing them to go to server support and paying 300 bucks for a one time call. Yeah, bottom line wise, Apple lost a 300 dollar support call fee. But they later sold quite a few macbooks to the students who were used to hearing how good Apple was.

Anyway, after some of the other groups started complaining, that manager was quietly removed and put over a non support team. This pattern continued to grow worse right up until the time I left, whatever brought in the most money was king and thinking outside the box was verboten. It certainly influenced my decision to retire early, as it did others who went on to other jobs.

I really wished Apple would focus $$ on their own products. Look at their recent products. Argh.

The Man Who Never Clicks

The Man Who Never Clicks

entr0py says...

Trying to adjust to a macbook, it does seem like they've gone crazy with the keyboard shortcuts. Naw, you don't need a delete key or home or end or f-lock, if users aren't willing to play that thing like a piano they don't deserve us.

Bill Burr - Buzz Aldrin Punches Guy

dannym3141 says...

Talking to a conspiracy theorist about either the moon landing or the flat earth theory is exasperating. They discredit a scientific theory on the slightest technicality in your brief retelling of it, but if you baulk at their vague one-sentence alternative you're brainwashed.

You can tell them about the retroreflectors, or the satellite images we have of the landing site. You can tell them about sundials, the phases of the moon or constellations.

They don't care - anything can be faked and their definition of "proof" boils down to seeing it with their own naked eye.

It's totally impractical to take everyone up in a Red Bull balloon to see the curvature of the Earth for themselves. Presumably you'd have to take everyone up twice at two locations to show that the circular horizon is not an edge. Or kill two birds with one stone and take them to the moon landing site and back again because nothing less will suffice.

Because if I take them to the most advanced telescope in the world and focus it on the moon landing site - the image could be faked. You could show them how the telescope works, but each component could produce a faked output. The only way they would accept the telescope information is if they built it themselves from raw materials - oh you used a standard electronic device such as a basic motor? Illuminati dude, that thing can produce EM waves that fake the image. You're going to use a Macbook to read the USB output? Are you a shill?

Literally nothing is good enough but they are all, without exception, too fucking lazy to go and prove it to themselves from first principles.

Which is called "getting a degree in physics", where you are also taught to question every step, AKA being "brainwashed".

Grilling Food on my Laptop....big mistake.

Mordhaus says...

One of them, yes. I think we had 2 or 3 battery recalls for the macbooks and one hell of a recall for the macbooks with nvidia graphics. The graphics one was horrendous; I didn't have to deal with the support calls once we nailed it down and they stopped escalating them to tier 3, but god the call volume was out of this world for the tier 1 folks.

People don't realize it, but I can tell you that for the years I worked there (from 2005 to 2011), we used to joke that we should change the catchphrase to "It just doesn't work." Of course, a lot of the problems were because end users were trying to use products in a way they weren't meant to be used.

That's nuts. Is this the recalled battery model that Apple recalled?

Grilling Food on my Laptop....big mistake.

Mordhaus says...

When I still worked for Apple, I had a safety issue escalated to engineering over a Macbook Pro. The battery had apparently ruptured and began jetting flames out of the keyboard area. The owner tried to douse it with a cheapo fire extinguisher, one of the powder ones you can get from discount stores, but it only briefly went out.

Since it was still smoking, he was going to carry it outside but, as he opened the front door, the flames started coming back. He tossed it out onto the lawn, where it burnt a big chunk of grass.

I wish I had thought to keep the pictures; it had burnt his desk and destroyed his lawn. Apple legal went out and the guy later let me know via email that they had recompensed him for his desk, replaced the notebook, and paid to have his lawn re-turfed.

It wasn't funny at the time, but this video reminded me of it and now it is kind of hilarious. Still not as good as the kid who figured out how to game Apple's escalation system to get free stuff, but pretty damn funny.

Hodor makes fun of Apple in Samsung ad

shagen454 says...

I bought a Samsung laptop maybe 4 or 5 years ago. It sort of looked like a Macbook; never going to buy a single product from them again. That laptop was a nightmare and did not last long.

Computer Nightmares, China USB hub kills PC by design

SDGundamX says...

They have without doubt some of the most quality engineered laptops on the planet. I have a Macbook and my wife has an Asus Macbook clone (straight down to the silver-polish finish). And yes, hers cost less and has a dedicated GPU so she could play games on it (if she had any interest in games) but the Macbook is lighter, keeps the battery charged longer, has a much more beautiful display (Retina vs Full Hd), is much more comfortable to type with, and the touchpad is just freaking heaven to use. I now hate having to use touchpads on any Windows laptop, even my bootcamped Mac!

And you hit the nail on the head about using the right tool for the right job--I work with video as part of my job sometimes and I don't think I can ever go back to video editing on a Windows machine. I can do it easier and faster on an OSX device.

I think also the initial outward simplicity of Mac operating systems makes them ideal for people who don't want to or don't have time to become "computer people" and worry about dealing with downloading the latest drivers or all of the other BS that you need to constantly deal with on a Windows machine. I especially wish my dad, who is constant calling me and my brother for help with his PC, would just switch over to a Mac as it would solve probably 95% of the issues he calls us about.

To be fair, Apples are actually really useful for certain jobs. And i don't mean propping tables up or holding doors open.
