Biochemist creates CO2-eating light

I love the green hue. Next step would be utilizing this to create white light or more usable light. Although, I'd definitely rock the green in my house.

Green light in the greenhouse is exactly what you DON'T need. Plants reflect green wavelength, and use the red and blue. What did work was a flourescent pink plastic that took the green wavelength and converted it (somehow) to pink. The plants could use this extra red(ish) light, and didn't waste the green energy. It's odd they never started selling that.
This is why they sell green flashlights to use in the greenhouse at night, the green light doesn't upset the plants light cycles because they don't absorb it.

...Oops, mis-read, thought you said 'in my greenhouse'. Never mind.

Amazing Japanese "Tron" Live Stage Show.

Well, it reminds me of Tron. And I think it would be fair to tag it with "tron", as someone doing a tag search for "tron" might be interested to see this, given that it's got lighty-uppy suits and music from the Tron Legacy soundtrack.

Apart from the glowing lights, this actually has seemingly NOTHING to do with tron, the original video doesn't have anything to do with tron anywhere in the wording, and the description is as follows:
"The full version of CM performance was appointed as the mobile phone company by street dance crew WRECKING CREW ORCHESTRA FAMILY representing Japan.
Has been produced in the original costume, control systems, such as the choreography."
Also, as they're working off of a CD or MP3, this is very much not live music.
So, no, not tron. Nochannel Scifi Dance Skillful Music

So you're telling me you don't look at this and think "Tron"? Seriously?

Nope. Same as I don't consider a video like this that essentially has the exact same type of costume on the dancers tron in any way, shape or form.
And regardless of weather or not one looks at this and goes, "Oh yeah, this reminds me of tron" doesn't make it a tribute to tron. Besides the glowing suits, there's nothing even referencing tron. No frisbee, no light cycle, not Master Control Program, nothing. It's just the costume they're wearing for the dance. That's all.
It's like saying that this is a tribute to Jurassic Park.

What I Am Legend would have looked like with non-CG monsters

probie says...

My personal take: the problem with CGI and 3D anmiation (and it's only been exacerbated by the new trend in 3D moviemaking) is it gives the director too much control. Regarding camera placement, instead of employing traditional camera movement, now that in can be placed anywhere, it has been. We get these rollercoaster spins, pans, trucks and zooms that completely disorient the viewer. In "Tron Legacy", do I really need to see the light cycles in profile, hovering only 2 inches off the ground going 100mph to the right, only to vault over the bike and sweep around to the back of it to showcase another light cycle entering the fray? No. Just because you can place the camera inside someone's butt crack doesn't mean you should.

And with CGI, it gives the director too much leeway in exaggerating scale, movement and proportions. Perfect example: In Stephen Sommers remake of "The Mummy" Imhotep screams and his mouth artificially elongates. If you watch earlier in the film, it does so but only slightly, imparting a sense of the supernatural. But by the end of the film, his screams become so overly done, it comes across as comic and bufoonish, as if I was watching a Tex Avery cartoon. That's OK to do in Jim Carrey's "The Mask" because it calls for it. But not in "The Mummy", nor in "I Am Legend". The vampires in "I Am Legend" aren't threatening, they're evil monster meets Stretch Armstrong.

I like Aronofsky's approach to CGI: Use it as sparingly as you can, and only as a last resort.

I refuse to see this movie on the grounds that the bikes don't turn at right angles anymore. Seriously, we can't let them get away with that shit.

>This isn't 'Nam, Disney. It's Tron. There are rules.

That's funny, I'd refuse to see it if the light-cycles did still turn at right angles. Like PHJF said above, they've upgraded their systems. Looks like fun!

it does look darn pretty
but what the hell is the ROCK in a VIRTUAL world all about?

That's not a straight up VR World. Tron's more a fantasy universe like Middle Earth or the Star Wars Galaxy then a literal digital landscape. The "people" (minus one) are various bits of programming codes and scripts, etc.

If you try to think of their world as a Second Life or something certain things wont make sense. It's a fantasy universe using the internals of computer systems as the backdrop.

Plus that's taking place in a Light Cycle arena (game map), hence all the obstacles and spiral paths.

God I'm a geek.

I'm also too young to have any sort of nostalgic attachment to this movie. If Pixar is really involved this could be on a level the original was at the time of it's release. The game (Tron 2.0) by Monolith was fantastic though. Armagetron is also good, clean, multiplayer, light-cycling fun and will run on a calculator...also has some interesting acceleration mechanics and advanced maneuvers, aside from being a tiny free download. Nothing like a cutthroat, 8-person, light-cycle free-for-all.
