False facts about Star Trek many think are true

poolcleaner says...

Ok, these are cool and all, but any legit Trekker/ie (BOTH terms have been used by varied alumni cast members and fans to mean whatever they want it to mean) knows these things. Anyone who has watched every episode is like "Are these not obvious facts?"

Spock's emotions were even referenced in the JJ reboot. The beam me up thing is already memed. And ST:TNG practically showcases the burreaceacy of Starfleet as something Picard can elloquently rebutt.

But cool video, this is favorited so i can just send it to people who aren't ultra nerds. (My wife is actually the legit Trekker in the family tho -- i set her ringtone to "It's been a long time" because she hates that folky intro song and i know it annoys her that it's Star Trek music hahahahaaaaa...

Denmark has a lesson for us all

vil says...

Its an ad, scripted, written jokes, those are actors, nothing is "legit".

Not thrashing anything - I really think football fans are a good metaphor for a religious sect and I agree with the basic premise of this skit.

Trump's False Claims and Executive Orders

poolcleaner says...

Maybe he has Asperger syndrome. His strange obsession with the details of his successes reminds me of highly successful autistic people that I've known or worked with. Difficult to even talk to or be friends with at times due to the successes creating hypomania that ranges to extreme megalomania. One of my old friends and coworkers who continues to do great things, calmed down once he was diagnosed and faced the reality of his behavior. Oh "The Donald" you need to see a legit therapist, buddy. All that self denial and lack of personal insight EVEN in hindsight, denying reality.

5 Weird Ways Germany Has Censored Video Games

MilkmanDan says...

Very interesting, but I have some questions about the efficacy of those rules/laws with regards to actually keeping the uncensored versions out of German hands.

Here in Thailand, since 2008 all GTA games are specifically banned (after a nutter who killed a taxi driver said he was influenced by GTA), along with any games with "excessive violence" or sexual content. In spite of that, the majority of male students in the High School where I teach have played GTA5 or other GTA games. There are no legit physical copies for sale in stores (I assume they are also removed from Steam for Thai users but I dunno), but like with all media here piracy is rampant and kids either torrent/download pirated copies of the games for themselves or buy a pirated copy of the game on DVD from vendors that can be found in markets in every city or village.

The rampant piracy also circumvents Thai censorship laws that require movies to blur out people smoking, drinking alcohol, or nudity / sexual content. Legit copies (which are rare) adhere to the rules, but most people end up with pirated copies that are more often than not sourced from uncensored versions and therefore don't follow the local rules.

Pretty weird situation. Makes me wonder if now in the internet age many German consumers might have no moral qualms with buying legit German-censored versions of things and then downloading pirated / cracked versions from the internet that circumvent the censorship.

Grappler Police Bumper - No more PIT maneuver

mas8705 says...

I'm sure this might have been answered already, but I feel like it does need to be answered: What would happen if the suspect were to try and suddenly turn the steering wheel after getting snagged? I don't want to assume that the car could still flip, or still have some control rather than be forced to drive forward until it comes to a complete stop.

If anyone knows the answer, please feel free to respond. I don't want to be negative here of course since it is a legit question to ask.

WTF have you done America?

mas8705 says...

Here's the thing. If all his past "fuckups" as you put it were supposed to completely discredit him as a canidate, why the hell did the following happen:

a) Be allowed to Run
b) Get nominated for the Republican nomination
c) Win the Election

We knew all the shit in his past, but you know what? He was still voted in not by fellow Republican politicians, but the people who saw that Trump could do what the people in DC can't do. That's one thing you, I and everyone else needs to accept. If this was "Such an issue that should have disqualified him from running and instead he should be in Jail," Why is he not in jail? Legit question because whatever that you might respond to that could be the same reasons why people feel like Hillary should be in Jail but still isn't.

"Republicans would be embarrassed to admit they'd backed a candidate that spent more of his first four years in jail than in the office. It would blow up the party and they're too self-centered to do that."

What's there to be embarrassed about? They never supported Trump to begin with! If it was a case where they were singing his praises, then the "grab them by the pussy video" came up, that would be embarrassing. Instead, they didn't show their support for Trump and then when that video came up, those who didn't support Trump basically doubled down on their "No supporting Trump."

The Republicans aren't going to act all "cheerful" now that Trump has won. They are cautious as all hell now more than ever. Even Paul Ryan calls Trump's win the "Most unprecedented win in the history of our country." The Republican party already strapped on the suicide vest the moment Trump accepted the nomination, and that vest isn't going to come off just because he won. They are going to watch him like a hawk and impeach him the moment he screws up. Impeaching Trump for if he screws up is not the same as "the party blowing up," but if Trump makes constant failed policies and they decide to stand by Trump, that is just watching the boat sink with all passengers on board.

Trump is not your average politician. As such we can't assume that should action be taken against Trump, that won't be average either.

What he needs to do now is prove that the trust that has been to put him by the people was well placed and that he will do the things he promised to do. All what the Republicans can do is just watch him carefully.

Sorry for the wall of text, but the only reason why I'm infuriated is that people honestly think we're turning into a fascism when really it would be easy to prevent such things from happening. Especially if there was no party loyalty to begin with.

He's fucked up his whole life.

Cheated contractors, investors, the IRS. Sexually assaulted women, then bragged about it. He runs a false charity that only works to benefit Trump himself. He openly espouses Putin's policies on topics of Russian interest, even when it conflicts with American interest. He condones and encourages violence. Threatens to use the power of the office to imprison his perceived enemies. Threatens to jail journalists and comedians who disagree with him. Can't even UNDERSTAND why nuclear weapons are not to be used except in cases of existential threat.

If they're going to impeach him, there's plenty of material already. He could see jail before he sees the Oval Office.

It would take an overwhelming majority of Americans voting against Republicans in four years to tip the scales. If they have another four years, they're only going to push things further. Watch California get reduced to fewer electoral votes than Arkansas.

The US is bordering on failed state/despotism. The Republicans in congress and the senate are the only ones who could stand in the way, but if they stand in the way, they give up their own power.

Do you really think they're going to do that? Really?

Are Amazon Reviews Biased?

spawnflagger says...

I mentioned to a Google coder at least 4 years ago that Google Shopping should add this same exact feature... It wasn't a problem back then, but is now.

I really only look at the 1 and 2 star reviews on Amazon - if they seem legit, I'll usually pass on buying the product.

My biggest pet-peeve right now with Amazon 3rd-party sellers: using the "color" variation picker to list completely different products. It muddles all the reviews, ratings, and questions- and most cases just dishonest.
Amazon should put a "report this listing" link so customers can inform of incorrect use of "color" variations, and if enough complaints come in, the listing is removed, and the seller has to split it up like they should have in the first place.

Penn Jillette on Atheism and Islamaphobia

poolcleaner says...

BULLSHIT. *waits for the jesus bomb* Oh, it was bullshit. Funny. Freaking Penn, you dick. lol!!!

Anyway, his first statement aside, isn't this how legit atheists have always thought? And by that I mean, atheists who practice what they preach and love other humans, as every mammal should. Shitting on belief systems but NEVER NEVER hating the actual person? That's how I function.

I always imagined it was simply the projections of the insecure haters of atheists that projected this perception that we hate Muslims. I never understood how atheism could mean anything other than love. That's why I became an atheist in the frickin' first place, because I realized God isn't loving if he could send people to hell. And from there it simply followed logically towards the absence of God.

I have friends from Malaysia and Iran who clearly CLEARLY have Islamic backgrounds -- but they're badass Americans and beyond that they're human goddamnit -- and I love them as much as I love my Jewish, Atheist, and Christian friends. I can't say that they aren't Muslim, because I don't want to assume anything and I don't want them to be in trouble if they aren't. But yeah, I love all my friends.

And you know what, I love bobknight and that piss flavoured cotton candy Trump thing, even though they both project hate onto us for being liberal. Honestly, I love you bob, and we aren't terrorists and neither is every Muslim. I love you -- even though you support America's terrorists, the police. And I love the police, despite my dislike of SOME (well, maybe MOST) of their views about the world. <3

A Mesmerizing Line Of Caterpillars

Bill Maher: Julian Assange Interview

MilkmanDan says...

I think it is stupid to whine about the email leaks "unfairly" damaging Hillary's campaign.

The DNC could have easily avoided the fallout / resignations / etc. by simply not doing shady, underhanded shit. When you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar, don't bitch about who snitched on you -- a better response would be to learn that you can't get caught if you don't do anything wrong.

Sorta reminds me of earlier in the campaign when Hillary complained that it was unfair for people to want to see her transcripts of paid speeches given to Wall Street banks. She said that other candidates weren't expected to do that, so it was an unfair double standard. Bernie Sanders response was great -- he said he'd be 100% willing to hand over any of his transcripts, except for one minor problem: he never made any paid speeches to Wall Street banks.

With regards to Wikileaks, I have zero problems with how they handled things and don't care at all who their source was -- Russia, some other very biased source with a clear agenda to damage Hillary, whatever. The only thing that matters is, are the emails true / legit? I haven't heard anyone suggest that they aren't; just bitching about it being "unfair" that all the dirt is on Hillary and the DNC.

Wikileaks relies on sources. You know, leakers. I'm confident that if they had dirt on Trump or any other candidate, they'd put it out there. But Wikileaks can't make candidates or parties do questionable shit, and even when candidates or parties do do questionable shit, they still need someone to catch them and then leak the information to Wikileaks.

Sometimes, if they don't have any dirt on somebody, it might be because there isn't any dirt to be had... Just like Sanders' transcripts of Wall Street speeches.
