Subway Surfers in the App Store now free! (Blog Entry by gwiz665)

gwiz665 says...

Oooh, cool. Let me just read through and answer what I can.

1) We had a cataclysmic overload on our server when the game launched, so it went down over the weekend of launch. If you still have issues, try closing the app completely and restarting. The daily challenge is like in bubble bobble - you gather the letters in the game, and when you have the full word you win a mystery box.

2) Yes, if the daily challenge is bugging out, you're gonna have a bad time with that mission. The easy fix is that you can pay for a mission skip in the shop, or wait for an update. -_- It should reset and work again after a full restart though.

3) The mystery box is bugged in that you can make it confused if you click with more than one finger. This makes it lose its reference to the labels etc. Essentially, yes, it's a bug and what's far worse, it's MY bug. *cry* It will be fixed in an upcoming patch. I've already done it, it's just waiting for some other features. A hard restart will absolutely fix this.

4) Headstarts: When a game starts, an icon should swoop in from the left with the headstart icons. Clicking them will trigger a big jetpack boost that sends you quite a bit forward in the level. It's great for getting big scores. If that button doesn't show up, it seems something is amiss. Again, do the full restart and try again.

5) Skip missions: There are some missions which can take a lot of time, so we made these so people have a chance to skip the ones they didn't like (or couldn't do for some reason). When you have completed a mission, the skip is removed from the store - if the mission is still completable, it remains in the store. When you complete 3 missions, you get 3 new ones and the skips come back. The plural thing annoys the fuck out of me too, but this time it isn't my mistake. That is fixed in the upcoming patch.

6) Super sneakers are hard to use. The trick is to realize that you can swipe downward while flying/jumping, which gives you quite a lot of control. The really good players in the office love them, I'm like meh. I also avoid them when I can, because I suck at controlling them, heh.

7) 2x multi: There should be a timer in the bottom on all the powerups you pick up, if there's not, then something is bugging out hard. Same advice as before. Hard restart.

You get the tokens in the mystery boxes. When you pass the thresholds, 3, 50 200 and 500, you unlock the characters. You can change characters is Shop -> Characters (switch them on the arrows, and click select). I think the bigger thresholds are very high too, but that's what the other game designers felt was right. When you get more than the threshold, they are redundant at this point. I honestly can't say if they will be used for something, but it's something we have discussed earlier.

Phew, that was a big bit. I hope you're enjoying the game, we'll have some more stuff coming out for it soon enough - if nothing else, it will fix a bunch of bugs.

>> ^Sagemind:

I have a few issues with the game.
first of all - no instructions on how to play.
- how do you get/switch characters
Daily Challenges (JIVE) (no idea what JIVE means)
says "next challenge in 0:00:00" and NEVER Changes - so no new challenges - ever.

Missions
Of the three missions, the first mission is "complete 1 Daily Challenge" (which is not checked).
The other two challenges ("Dodge 20 barriers" & "6000 points in one run") are both completed and checked. This screen never updates or changes - no new missions ever (BUG)
Shopping
Hoverboard - works fine (double tap - got it)
Mystery Box - when I find a mystery box burring game play and tap to see what it is there is text there that never goes away (it reads:"1x Yutani's UFO - tap to open") - left over from a previous reveal) The new text for every reveal since layers over top of that original text making all text unreadable. I have no idea why that old text never goes away. (BUG)
Headstart (250/1000)
Not sure how these work, there is no explanation for them. I've won several through mystery boxes but they never show that I have any and I don't know how to engage them if I had them.
Skip Missions - OK fine, but I'd rather play through, it's like paying to cheat
I only have one skip mission left (Skip mission 1) which will let me skip my daily challenge #1. The challenge is to "Complete 1 daily Challenges" other than being pluraly incorrect, I've already completed the other two challenges and this has not gone away and never will since there is nothing left to trigger this challenge.
Upgrades
Jetpack - works great (fun challenge)
Super Sneakers - haven't mastered these yet. Are they there just to kill me? my guy is so unwieldy, I can't control. I can't stay on the coins because he jumps over them instead of on them and I usually die everytime I get the shoes. I avoid the shoes every chance I get.
Coin Magnet - works great (I only wish it worked this easy in real life )
2x Multiplier
When playing the game, I can't tell if this is working, I may be missing it, but I don't see anything that tells me when this is engaged or has run out.
Characters
How do you switch the characters?
Do you first need to complete/find the items? (for the girl I have 2/3) do I gain access to her once I get 3/3? I've played quite a bt. 3/3 seems doable but the kid with the radio (3/50) the rocker guy (3/200) and alien costumed girl (1/500) would seem IMPOSSIBLE to attain. If it has taken me 5-6 hours to get 1/500, I know I will never get 500/500 before I loose interest in this game.
Also, in the mystery boxes I've had about 4-5 guitars (and likewise for items from different characters - eg. hats). Are these supposed to be counting or are they redundant and I'm supposed to be getting different items for these characters?

OK, that's all I have at the moment. I'll let you know If I see anything else.
So the two bugs I see right away:
-The issue with the challenges never advancing
-The Text issue with the writing when revealing the Mystery Box
If you know of any fixes for my issues, let me know - Thanks

Starter Fluid Tire Inflation [MythBusters]

rottenseed says...

That's very true. The simple fact that because the pressure of the tire off the rim is going to be normalized with the atmospheric pressure, even if you seated the tire back on manually, you'd have a zero pressure delta between outside the tire and inside. For a tire to run properly, usually you have to have a difference of approximately 30 psi. So yea, case closed. THANKS!>> ^messenger:

That might work better, but to pressurize a tire, you need significantly more gas than just the little bit that comes out of the spray can, and it must be at ambient temperature too to count. Clearly, the only reason this inflates the tire at all is the heat. Here's a thought experiment that disproves the "stays inflated" myth:
Consider that you need to have much more gas inside the tire than outside for it to stay inflated at ambient temperature. Before lighting the gas, there's the same pressure inside and outside the tire because the two areas are contiguous. When she lights the fire, the gas inside expands rapidly, and lots of it escapes, so now, while there's a greater volume of gas inside the tire than before, this is due to a greatly reduced density, so there's actually less gas inside than before, which is why there was a vacuum. Using heat, there will always be less gas inside than before. It's not even worth experimenting. The only way something like this could work is with compressed gas, which you certainly wouldn't want to do because that would blow the tire up if it were lit on fire.
I think there are self-inflating tires already on the market that have compressed gas cartridges built in, triggered by a sensor that fixes flats by spraying a sealant inside, then lots of pressurized gas, probably CO2. They don't use fire.>> ^rottenseed:
So the limiting reactant would be the starter fluid and the air in the tire. Oxygen to be more exact. Because you want enough forces to seat the tire, but not so much it removes all of the gases from the tire, maybe they should have tried less starter fluid. If that's depleted in the reaction quickly leaving enough energy to seat the tire, but also enough oxygen left over from the reaction, you might end up with a working tire.
Somebody please double check my thought process, but I think it's definitely worth more experimentation.

Would be one to test, but I think you'd end up with the same problem. End of the day to jump the tyre back on the rim you are going to be filling quite a lot of the inside of that tyre with the hot gases from the combustion. You might get less deflation with less accelarant, but I'd think you'd start with a lower pressure within the tyre even before the gases cool, so you wouldn't gain much. Thats my guess anyway.

Now maybe if you did this, and at the same time dropped just the right amount of dry ice in with it you could get the tyre back on the rim AND get it pressurised without the need for some sort of pump. Ofc, dry ice is not exactly something you tend to have stored in the glove compartment...

How NOT to train a husky puppy to go "down"

chingalera says...

Doing very well it looks like. Training puppies with treats is faster than with praise alone (taught a 10-week-old border collie bitch 3 tricks in one day with some left-over pork fried-rice!). Its ok to make puppy lie down by gently sliding his legs down from a sitting position while using a one-word command but make sure it completes the prostration before you give him the treat or praise or you'll confuse it.
At the end there it looked exactly like it should for a "roll-over" command. The puppy followed the treat in the hand and rolled completely over! That is a trick I'll bet shep here will learn fast!

Hooray for puppies learning tricks!

Fact or Friction

Done. That was a very entitled and misogynistic read, and the arguments sounded exactly like the ones the Republican on Meet The Press presented. The $40k/$47k line was used specifically -- except that it's a figure that's now eleven years old, so who knows how valid it is anymore. In any event, I claim that based on this sample of his work, the book represents a very misogynistic viewpoint. Not everything in the book is going to be anti-woman, but there's enough there to form a clear pattern.

"Give women ways of earning more rather than suing more." / "Give companies ways of teaching women how to earn more."

Both of these statements stem from the belief that women think they are a privileged class and should get more rights and protections then men. It further states that the playing field is already level, and if women were just a little smarter they'd figure out how to earn more and wouldn't need the courts to fight their battles for them. This is misogynistic on its face -- It is a belief that women aren't as bright as men and need special training to "earn more", and a belief that women aren't already doing the same work men are. It also assumes that the playing field is actually level, which it is not.

"At this moment in history, gender-specific research is funded with a consciousness toward making women in the workplace look equally engaged but unequally paid."

This espouses a belief that there is an agenda behind equal-pay studies and that the researchers were biased and cannot be trusted. It's a form of "projecting" -- Modern Republicans (among others) love this tactic and truly believe in it because their studies have an agenda and are biased, so all studies must be the same way. The fact is that biased studies don't hold up to scrutiny (peer review), and research methodologies are published to help verify the quality of a study. It's also the same argument that you used in an earlier post: "The statistics can be shown to prove anything, so I can raise a counterargument without supporting it with data."

"From the Jobs Rated Almanac’s worst-job list: We often hear that women are segregated into lower-paying jobs. What is probably true is that women are more likely to take lower paid jobs precisely to avoid these worst jobs." / "The fields with the highest paid workers bias toward engineering, computers and the hard sciences while the lowest paid are doing work that almost any adult can do—therefore there is no end to the supply of available people."

The fact that this is still used as an argument means that those using it are being deliberately misleading. This misses the point and always has. If unequal pay was a function of occupation choice, then a man and a woman in the same job at the same company would make the same amount of money. This is provably false.

"Men’s Weakness As Their Façade Of Strength; Women’s Strength as Their Façade Of Weakness" / "In most fields with higher pay, you can’t psychologically check out at the end of the day (corporate attorney vs. librarian)"

These comments espouse a belief in seriously outdated gender roles. Assuming women should be shrinking violets that do their work behind the scenes and do amazing things that surprise the men she is working under is not the way it works anymore, and thank goodness because that was a bunch of crap when it was expected (which was what, five decades ago?). The concept that women can't handle the stress of not leaving work behind when you leave work is equally misogynistic.

"People Who Get Higher Pay..."

This is the last one I'll tackle, and I'm going to repeat myself here, because it bears repeating. This is the heart of what's wrong with the "equal-pay is a myth" counterargument. The whole chapter and the next is predicated on the belief that women make less because they're making the wrong choices, not risking as much as their male counterparts, and are working less than the men even though they're in the same position. Therefore women *should* earn less because women are *doing* less.

Except that women *aren't* doing less. They don't just occupy the same positions, they do the same work. In some cases they do more work, and are still stiffed and passed over for promotion. Women are willing and able to do exactly what men do for their jobs, and yet they make considerably less for no reason other than their gender. There isn't an "effort gap" or "reverse sexism" or "societal factors" in play here -- Those have been modeled and they don't explain the disparity. It is discrimination, plain and simple. It's literally the only explanation left over.

Coming Apart: Elites Should Teach Working Class How to Live

bobknight33 says...

I don't live in a bubble. I live in reality.

The reality is that Companies don't give a shit and don't pay shit. I work for one of the worlds largest companies who made 15 billion in profits last year and did not pay any Federal taxes.

And yet they scream that the Co is going broke. They restructured the insurance plan and now you have to pay the 1st $2k out of you own pocket then it is 80/20. And they are self insured. They can structure any plan they want but they just want to be greedy.

Oh and no pay raise either. The company is not making enough profits.

With 15 Billion in profits they could have given each employee 1 million in cash and still have 14.75 Billion left over.

And they say that their people are their most valuable asset. Utter bullshit.

I agree.
We've made our school system (including college) a farm team for the NBA, NFL.

If you can dodge a ball, you can fix global warming?
Srsly, I don't see how any American (or indeed anyone else on the bloody planet) can look at a system like this and not want to use it, unless they have an agenda where keeping people poor and stupid and without opportunity is the goal... \= |

But I'd argue, it's the system that those in power want and corporations want. Because it allows them the excuse to ship high school level jobs out to other countries. You see it all the time "We can't find any qualified candidates!" and then they need H1B visa restrictions lifted so they can bring people in or the job goes to another country after they milk the taxpayers for "tax breaks" on a building promising some jobs and conveniently forget to deliver on the jobs.

It's a systematic breakdown of all counters and checks to their ability to solely profit since no one can compete against them if they make consumers as dumb as possible in general, ship the jobs overseas, and bring all the products back at reduced prices until they kill any possible competition ....then jack the prices up. And now there's been a huge lull in jobs in manufacturing, etc...so the schools aren't preparing people for those jobs or training schools have went under and the general population education level has dropped to prevent it from easily being fixed.

And.......since they control lots of money (and therefore power), they can now keep it that way because they are "too big" to be told no. And now they are trying to privatize stuff to get even more cash out of people, and then they completely control the whole process and you will be just as educated as they'll let you be.
