Lando Gives Tour Of Millennium Falcon

RFlagg says...

My question is how does the MF get so dirty between this movie and Star Wars. The movie is set somewhere between 11 and 14 years before Star Wars: A New Hope. 10 years doesn't seem nearly long enough for the level of grime. Even if Solo doesn't keep as good care of it as Lando did, which is fitting of both characters... or Lando has lots of fake stuff to keep it looking clean and neat, as it is apparently close to 60 years old by the time of New Hope (not sure if that is still canon though), and that stuff is removed or falls off, revealing the ship's true nature, and this might fit with Lando's character, trying to make himself seem cleaner and better than what he was. Perhaps part of his con.

Would be funny if during a mid/after credit scene we see the fake clean stuff start falling off, and Solo commenting about how Lando was a dirty cheat.

EDIT: Seems there is a possible explanation and possible spoilers, Han wanted the ship to blend in so let it get dirty or made it look dirty...

Solo: A Star Wars Story Official Trailer

RFlagg says...

*promote just because I can't wait to see Donald Glover as Lando. If his parts are good, and the movie is just okay, I'll be happy enough. If the movie is good, and his parts are good to great...

Solo Sabotage Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Well yeah... that's kinda the point. You do know this isn't the official trailer, right? That one's even worse.

If you're going to do a Han Solo movie without a time machine to bring back a young Harrison Ford... well, first off, just don't. It's a terrible idea.

But if you really feel a burning need to do so (like your shareholders saying how much money this will make), then this is a character piece.

The only reason to watch a Solo movie is to spend time with a character we love. The plot is pretty much irrelevant. Get him into trouble, have him meet Chewie and Lando, get the falcon, etc. and watch them get out of trouble. There's really no important story here.

But if whatisname nails young Han... no-one will care.

The fact that we're NOT seeing much of Han makes me deeply worried.

This trailer is crap. It's all SFX, not a single plot point to convey. Haven't we all seen enough SFX for a life time of visual "EXICITEMENT!!!"? As awesomely executed as these SFX shots are, I still think plot is king and these trailers/teasers do nothing for me, no mystery, no intrigue, no world-building.

Han Solo movie trailer

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

They really worked hard on the reveal shot to give him that Solo look. Also, looking forward to seeing Glover as Lando - he brings a lot of fun to his roles.

Should We Colonize Venus Instead of Mars?

ChaosEngine says...

Er, "surfacism" has some pretty practical reasons behind it. For a start, if something goes wrong with your colony, it doesn't plummet several KMs into an acidic pressure cooker that will melt it.

That said, if Lando is on board, so am I.

There's a Secret Vehicle on the Millennium Falcon!

MilkmanDan says...

I agree, but to play devil's advocate here are two counterpoints:

1) The YT-1300 was designed as a freighter, and the Millennium Falcon only became a capable warship after pretty extensive modification by Lando and Han Solo. So, perhaps some of those flaws can be justified with "not really intended to be a combat vessel" rationale.

2) Or even ignoring that, shielding seems to be established as being much more important than armor plating around wires and pipes in the Star Wars universe. TIEs (at least the lower models) have no shielding whatsoever, and the only thing that separates them from just being pure cannon fodder is size, agility, and numbers.

But even in medium fighters that DO have shields, it seems like they at best protect against a very low number of glancing hits -- we see X and Y wings with shields go down after 1-2 hits a LOT in the movies. In that scenario, I guess there isn't a whole lot of need to slow yourself down with heavy armor plating that might let you survive another hit if you are lucky. Kinda like how modern police officers and soldiers don't wear heavy steel plate armor; they either wear kevlar (think "shields") or nothing but clothing/uniform.

So, maybe the larger ships in Star Wars stock up on shields and aren't too fussed about physically covering up systems -- once the shields are down you're pretty much toast anyway.

I love the Millennium Falcon... one of the greatest spaceships in sci-fi. But watching it closely, it has some stupid design flaws... all that wiring and pipes and whatnot totally exposed.
