Basically, I was inducted into VideoSift with a snuff clip. Sure, I'd been a lurker and eventually discovered a gem nobody had posted yet, but soon after...
So, this discussion carries added weight with me. Since my Siftquisition, I have been a loyal and active contributor, much to the chagrin of few. I have enjoyed the thrill of upvoting videos I enjoy; and I, like everyone beside ant, have neglected to downvote videos I detest. I have also strived in providing VS with some of the most atrocious videos one could muster to get away with. I've broken many laws, for the betterment of the Sift, I feel. Somehow, I even got a controversy channel. Shit, I'm the #1 hiphop contributor. What!?
Anyways, the video under discussion is snuff. That's fact. The morning after I watched it I was still troubled. So, the question is, what kind of snuff should be allowed on the Sift?
I don't know. It would be easy to ban and discard all snuff; but the world a is complex, vast, and easily accessible now, and I'm under the opinion it would be foolish to lock ourselves out of it. This vid, and the ones krono mentioned aforehand, are snuff plain and simple.
I hesitatingly vote for allowing snuff on the Sift; provided we set some new rules, filters, and warnings.
The bottom line is, death is unavoidable and I just bought an iPhone.

Thanks a lot for this great post, kronos, there's no doubt you make the best congratulatory posts!

As you may have guessed, I really like this place. It's the first (and only) online community I've been involved in and it's been a great experience. I've learned a lot and discovered lots of obscure vids, music. I won't even try to mention all the wonderful people I've met or got to know during my time being a member.

Kronos Quartet did an amazing version of this piece, which upon listening will most defintely send chills down your spine.

"Faces of Death" is certainly not a snuff film according to the relatively strict official AFU definition. It purports to be a compilation of footage of death, collected by somebody named Doctor Gross [sheesh] as a result of his researches into the nature of death. There are only three sequences in the entire 100 minutes that depict probably genuine deaths. One is news footage of what appears to be a political assassination at a French news conference, the second is a skydiver falling to his death at an airshow, and the third is a botched movie stunt. The famous alligator and bear attack scenes are staged, and neither scene actually shows the victim being chomped or mauled. The monkey brain dinner scene also is unconvincing."

Okay, now let's target the three deaths that should sway the jury yay or nay:
1. "One is news footage of what appears to be a political assassination at a French news conference,"
This is news worthy and would make it onto the sift, presumably, posted by krono with an explanation of why this is news and not snuff.
2."the second is a skydiver falling to his death at an airshow,"
I would argue this as being a tragic news event, also.
3."and the third is a botched movie stunt,"
This is the most questionable of the three, in my opinion, and I would still say this would fall into a fail, tragic, wtf, news event.

Even though it doesn't mean anything. I kind of like voting for my own videos for some reason. I wouldn't be opposed to the change though.

I agree with your other points too. People wouldn't probably try too hard for those few extra clicks. That's as far as I'd want to go though. I would always like the ability to sift through another user's PQ. Maybe we could just hide the submitter's name until the video is off of the unsifted page, THEN it appears in their PQ.

Just removing the name of the submitter on the "unsifted" tag should be enough to do away with most of the buddy-voting going on, as I'm fairly certain people won't go through the trouble of looking up their buddies profile every time they log onto Videosift. It doesn't have to be impossible to figure out who posted what video though, as people on the net are generally too lazy to ever go through with any kind of work they don't absolutely have to. Clicking around two-three pages extra would, I'm sure we both could probably agree on, fall under the "won't bother" category.
But even if we'd want it taken to the extreme, then it wouldn't be hard to hide the "unsifted videos" and/or PQ links on ones personal page to everyone but the user. I just feel like there are better things to focus on than just arbitrarily raise the vote limit, and as such file off the fringe stuff in favour of the bland mainstream, like cat fart videos and slapstick. Hope you find this reasoning decent enough and not off-putting, as it's formed with the best of intentions. Oh, and also; Kronos' idea of removing the self-vote is something I found to be a great suggestion. What did you think of it?

Or we could hide the submitter's name until the video has been sifted, since I'm betting there's alot of buddy-voting going on. If that's indeed the case, then it'd be much more of detriment to the quality control idea.

I was the one who told blankfist about sallyjune, because I was unable to instaban him for some technical reason unknown to me at this time. Anyway, had I been able to I would have done the deed. Choggie (the person) deserves permanent banishment because he repeatedly broke rules AND repeatedly abused members, and whenever he has returned as a new member he has continued to be abusive with both public and private profile messages. Here he is calling UsesProzac a "cunt" and telling her to "pound your next scrip all at once and chase it with Clorox:"

Obviously you're not in that majority, but if the number of upvotes I received for this comment is any indication, we're still talking about a majority.
