Hancock - New Trailer :) Haha! Drunk Super Anti-Hero! (HQ)

Payback says...

>> ^Popo:
Who's the stupid airhead that made these special effects?
You can have all the superpowers in the world, it doesn't mean you can violate basic physics like inertia and lever principles.
I mean c'mon I'm fine with flying (affects only himself) but it doesn't matter if you fall 1000 feet onto concrete or an outstretched arm, you still stop in about one inch.
Is it too much to ask?

Ahhhh! What if his powers are BASED on the control of inertia? Control the vector value and kinetic energy of your inertia, you can fly, you can lift things, you can instantly convert the inertia of a loud mouthed little shit falling 1000's of feet through the air so there is suddenly no impact force. If you give the atoms of your body infinite inertia, bullets will bounce off, your fist will go anything without damage to you.

Do boomerangs work in space?

rychan says...

>> ^twiddles:
Anyone that thought that a boomarang couldn't work in a pressurized atmosphere and the absence of gravity does not deserve to be an astronaut.

Oh get over yourself. It's not at all obvious that a traditional boomerang should work in zero gravity as they have flight movements with respect to the gravity vector. See the diagram at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomerang

As typically thrown, the traditional boomerang relies on the presence of gravity to convert kinetic energy into potential energy (as it reaches the top of its arc), then back to kinetic energy in the opposite direction.

So maybe you can throw it differently and still have it return, but maybe not. It's NOT obvious, though. Your attitude stinks.

Goalkeeper CIWS Naval Defense System

Arsenault185 says...

The CIWS is not just a Dutch thing. Though I am not sure where it originated, the US Navy has been using it for quite sometime. And its not so much the kinetic energy that destroys the warhead, as much as it is the 4200 rounds that just went through it the the time it took to type the upcoming period.

US Navy Elecromagnetic Rail gun

8756 says...

"WTF ? Why can't we open fire on the enemy ?"
"Sir ! The notice is clear Sir ! - Batteries not included -"
"Dammit ! We're doomed !"

Btw, I've upvoted because it's technology, but, there's a quote that "enturbulated" me :
"You can use the kinetic energy to damage soft targets [...] as infantry man."
Said on the same tone as "infrastructure", or "non-living strategic targets" ... poor humanity.

Navy Rail Gun Test DESTROYS Targets at 5,640 mph

djsunkid says...

Holy fucking shit. Did you say 10 megajoules??????

According to this engineering page a 1000kg car travelling at 90km/h has only 320,000 joules of kinetic energy. So this tiny flechette has 30 times more energy than that???? AND that's only a third of its capacity?? FUUUUCK!

AK-47 vs M-16

kulpims says...

seems we all agree the guy in the video was a lousy shot
there's one more thing though - i imagine it's hard switching from 5.56 mm to 7.62 mm caliber weapon and still be as effective because of the totaly different balistic trajectory of the rounds. at this distance with an AK you'd have to aim quite low because the amplitude of the balistic trajectory is higher - the 7.62 bullet is heavier, bigger and goes in an arch, while the 5.56 slug from a M16 goes more in a straight line. that was also one of the reasons AK outperformed M16 in a jungle environment such as in vietnam - the lighter 5.56 bullet is more likely to be deflected from its intended path by dense vegetation while leaves and even small branches won't make the AK slug deviate so much as it has more kinetic energy

Perpetual Motion Machine Attempt

Aemaeth says...

Ya, I don't see why we keep going back to perpetual motion. Energy can not be created so it has to come from some place. I think instead of looking at snake oil energy generators, we should be looking at ways to convert energy that we have wasted back into useful energy. For example, my computer takes in electrical energy and converts it into different things, such as heat energy or kinetic energy. My monitor creates light energy. What if we could convert all that heat (that wastes even MORE energy on cooling) back into electrical energy? That would be (theoretically) possible and would not wear out over time. If we could reverse entropy, we could have essentially unlimited resources.

Amazing Wingsuit Flying

ambivalens says...

I forgot to explain how they can do it

The wingsuit is constructed by having panels underneath the arms and between the legs that fill up with air. When the wingsuit is inflated it performs not too differently from a wing. The pilot can manipulate how the "wing" flies by adjusting his bodyposition. Needless to mention, these guys have bodycontrol that just blows your mind.

You should also pay attention to when they do their exit from the cliff - apart from the summersaults for dramatic effect you can see that they go into pretty much a straight vertical dive. By doing this they build up an amazing amount of speed that they can use to fly flaster. They can use the extra surplus of kinetic energy to quickly adjust their trajectory if needed and thus fly over any obstacles. Greater speed = greater control.

You can find another VKB video right here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG6NFCIneTc
This video has been a huge hit in the skydiving/basejumping communities, but somehow it's not as popular with the general population.

Ricochet bullet to the head, dude's OK

ReverendTed says...

Regarding the "controversy" over whether this is legitimate or not: The obvious response video which I'm not talented enough to make is a loop cut between a slow-motion shot of the three seconds following impact and Kevin Costner in J.F.K.: "Back...and to the left..."

Anyway, one issue is that muzzle velocity is -almost- completely irrelevant, since it's impossible to know how much kinetic energy the round would bleed off by striking the target. (This assumes it was the round itself which came back - a reasonable assumption, given the whistle presumably resulting from a fin-shaped chunk of flattened lead.) One -could- potentially use muzzle velocity to dispute the veracity of the video based on the time between muzzle flash and *ping*, but I suspect that given the speed of sound one would find that the interval is consistent with a reasonable target distance and muzzle velocity.
A critical piece of more easily estimated evidence is the amount of time the object takes to traverse the distance between the ground puff and the headphones. One could possibly work backward from this velocity to determine whether or not timing of the event is reasonable.

Acoustic Analysis of WTC "Exhibit" Video

cryptographrix says...

As Einstein has proven - Energy can NOT be created or destroyed. The energy that was acting on the top floors HAD ALWAYS ACTED ON THEM(potential energy). When the top floors gave way(because of the supposed fires from the plane crash) - sure, they would fall - won't argue about that one - their POTENTIAL energy from gravity acting on them gets converted to KINETIC energy and THE TOP FLOORS FALL(because ENERGY CAN NOT BE CREATED OR DESTROYED).

You have to remember - the bottom floors HAD ALWAYS RESISTED the "pressure applied" from the top floors for OVER 20 years up to that point!

Why, all of a sudden, would they provide NO resistance(and thus each building falls in LESS THAN a minute) to the top floors, on September 11th?

Do I need to tutor you in high school physics, my friend?

The collapse of the WTC Buildings 1, 2, and 7 couldn't have happened without the laws of physics being VASTLY skewed(at the very least), or without the assistance of some type of Thermite/explosive. Refute me on that.

Calloway V Gate - Magnet Motor Prototype

gluonium says...

Proof #25348 that humans need to genetically engineer themselves to select for higher intelligence: widespread total ignorance of a 150 year old established law of physics and an inability even in the face of this ignorance to deduce trivially simple mechanisms of conventional kinetic energy transfer. Repeat after me: "perpetual motion machines have never been possible, are not currently possible and will never be possible in the future". I can't even tell you how incredibly depressing this post is to me.

Rising incidence of birth defects in Iraqi babies

Farhad2000 says...

Depleted uranium (DU) was used in tank kinetic energy penetrator and autocannon rounds on a large scale for the first time in the Gulf War. DU munitions often burn when they impact a hard target, producing toxic combustion products. The toxicity, effects, distribution, and exposure involved have all been the subject of a lengthy and complex debate.

Because uranium is a heavy metal and chemical toxicant with nephrotoxic (kidney-damaging), teratogenic (birth defect-causing), and potentially carcinogenic properties, uranium exposure is associated with a variety of illnesses. The chemical toxicological hazard posed by uranium dwarfs its radiological hazard because it is only weakly radioactive, and depleted uranium even less so.

Early studies of depleted uranium aerosol exposure assumed that uranium combustion product particles would quickly settle out of the air and thus could not affect populations more than a few kilometers from target areas, and that such particles, if inhaled, would remain undissolved in the lung for a great length of time and thus could be detected in urine. Uranyl ion contamination has been found on and around depleted uranium targets.

DU has recently been recognized as a neurotoxin. In 2005, depleted uranium was shown to be a neurotoxin in rats.

In 2001, a study was published in Military Medicine that found DU in the urine of Gulf War veterans. Another study, published by Health Physics in 2004, also showed DU in the urine of Gulf War veterans. A study of UK veterans who thought they might have been exposed to DU showed aberrations in their white blood cell chromosomes. Mice immune cells exposed to uranium exhibit abnormalities.

Increases in the rate of birth defects for children born to Gulf War veterans have been reported. A 2001 survey of 15,000 U.S. Gulf War combat veterans and 15,000 control veterans found that the Gulf War veterans were 1.8 (fathers) to 2.8 (mothers) times as likely to report having children with birth defects. In early 2004, the UK Pensions Appeal Tribunal Service attributed birth defect claims from a February 1991 Gulf War combat veteran to depleted uranium poisoning.

In 2005, uranium metalworkers at a Bethlehem plant near Buffalo, New York, exposed to frequent occupational uranium inhalation risks, were alleged by non-scientific sources to have the same patterns of symptoms and illness as Gulf War Syndrome victims.

The NATO countries of France, the United Kingdom and the United States have consistently rejected calls for a ban, maintaining that its use continues to be legal, and that the health risks are entirely unsubstantiated. The UK government further alleges that cancers and birth defects in Iraq could be blamed on the Iraqi Government's use of chemical weapons on its own citizens.

"Considering the disturbing reports on the ill effects of DU weapons in the Gulf and the Balkans, it is saddening to note that so far appeals for a moratorium coming from different quarters have not yet prevailed. Killing first and asking questions later has, however, never been a sensible solution"

- United Nations Sub-Commission on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, at paragraph 171 under the title "Moratorium" for the use of military DU rounds.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium#Military_applications

EDIT - Unfortunately I don't see this issue being addressed by anyone soon, because pulling DU out of the entire military ammunition apparatus did not happen since 1991 and Gulf War Sickness when VA vets complained, and I don't see it happening now. This being all sickly ironic given that --

Aircraft may also contain depleted uranium trim weights (a Boeing 747-100 may contain 400 to 1,500 kg). This application of DU is controversial. If an aircraft crashes there is concern that the uranium would enter the environment: the metal can oxidize to a fine powder in a fire. Its use has been phased out in many newer aircraft; Boeing and McDonnell-Douglas discontinued using DU counterweights in the 1980s. Some amount of depleted uranium was released eg. during the Bijlmer disaster, when 152 kg was 'lost'. Counterweights are manufactured with cadmium plating and are considered non-hazardous while the plating is intact.

So unsafe in airplanes, safe in war zones. Huh.

9/11 Mysteries-Fine Art of Structural Demolitions

theo47 says...

So you're buying a grand conspiracy because you, an ameteur's amateur physicist, can't reconcile the free-fall rate? Now that I know this is how your brain works, I can see how you'd get easily duped.

That's pretty pathetic. If I didn't know better, I'd say you're running out of reasons to keep believing in the conspiracies.

I don't much care, but if I were to guess, I would say that all the kinetic energy added by collapsing floors, fires, heat, etc. accelerated the process and pushed things downward and outward -- I don't know; I'm not a physicist and you're getting your numbers from watching a videotape at a high angle.

Way to go, Einstein.

National Geographic debunks martial arts' Chi

Everyone agrees that the human mind has an interesting relationship with the world around it. The chemist shows that the power of suggestion only works with someone predisposed to believing that you can be knocked out by being spiritually zapping. Interesting, toe-guys "attacks" actually might work only on other practitioners and beleivers of this art... I feel confident that defending himself with his touchless art wouldn't even cross his mind if toe-guy were about to be mugged on the street by a crackhead.

Oh, and much like breaking boards with an air-gap between them, pushing people who are lined up and touching one another is a simple and old show-off tool; try it out, especially if other participants have their legs and arms set straight... its just like pushing the first dude, as long as they're touching one another. Kinetic energy!!!

Karate Failure

oohahh says...

One strategy I've seen involves putting space between the boards, say, two pencils; one on the right and one on the left. That way, you only need to break through one board. The kinetic energy breaks the others with little added effort. Apparently, this karate master was above that.
