So Battlestar Galactica is Over. Thoughts? (Scifi Talk Post)

mintbbb says...

I wanted more.. I have to admit, I don't remember all the details from the whole series. And lots of the time I watched, I was very tired and a bit drunk, so I might have forgotten a lot.

Though wyhen I heard that there was going to be a Galactica remake, and Starbuck would be famela, I was not happy. I had a majot crush on Starbuck when I watched the original series, and a female Starbuck, wtf??

But I nreally grew fond of Kara! I love Aeryn Sun in Farscape, and Kara was like her.. kick-ass hero, who was soft inside. I really would have wanted to know more about her.

I really did not care much about Baltar.. He was way to weird and cryptic and crazy the whole series long. This Adama was way more human.,, and in the end, I wish he could have lived happily ever after with Roslin..

Oh, and what is the life span of a cylon like Tigh? Obviosly he eventually dies without resurrection. And what about Heras?

And what do Cylon Centurions do for fun anyway? Cruise the galaxy and.. ?

Like I said, I probably have forgotten more than I remember right now. I just wanted to know aboiot Starbuck!

I hope 'Lost' gets some better closure and explanation.

Kara (after she died), Head Baltar, and Head Six were all angels, doing the will of the superior being (not necessarily god).

Head six at some stages in the series actually caused physical harm to real baltar, not limited to lifting him off the ground in some cases. Her ability to manipulate him, even physically like that, is just the same as Angel-Starbuck, only kara was visible to everyone, and was oblivious to her nature until the very end.

Daniel was just a story plot used to fill in the missing cylon model number, and plays no role in the entire series other than that.

Hera is the mitochondrial eve. Her mixed blood gives the best of the cylons and the humans of the colonies, to man kind on new-earth.

The cylons of Earth 1.0 were the cylons that the original humans before them created. There has been a cycle of man evolving, man creating technology, man mastering technology, technology rebelling against man, and both of them wiping each other out. These cylons were no different.

I too was disappointed with the ending, but theres no real mystery after its all over, just....really lazy writing.

Final 6 minutes of Battlestar Galactica - *MAJOR SPOILERS*

Xax says...

Alright, so now that the spoiler warning is in full-effect...

The finale was very disappointing for me. The ultimate answer seemed to be, “God did it.” I was thoroughly unsatisfied with various things: Kara’s revelation and her end, everyone splitting up and going their own way (which just doesn’t ring true at all), no real explanation as to why Hera was so important, the abandonment of technology, the last few minutes... I could go on, but those are the big ones.

A terribly disappointing end to an incredible television series. It left me in a melancholy limbo all day yesterday.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out that "harbinger of death" thing too. Perhaps if the circle of violence was broken like they claim they had done, then Kara's destiny changed along with everyone elses'

OR

If the mitochondrial "Eve" was Hera, then we are Cylon/Human hybrids, and Kara did take the Human race to the place of their death. The race that won out were the decendants from the hybrid race from Hera?

It was no random piano player. It was in fact a figment of Kara's imagination - her 'dad', if there ever was one.

Thanks for mentioning this: I only noticed the 'invisible dad' on the second or third time through. There is one glaring flaw with your current theory: Dreilide Thrace (Kara's dad) definitively exists. He's a famous musician and we even see one of his recordings.

He did exist, but he easily could have been Daniel. I believe it was mentioned that all copies of Daniel were corrupted, but no mention was made of Daniel himself. IMO, Daniel, the artist, was Dreilide.

Bear McCreary Concert - BSG "All Along the Watchtower" Live

NetRunner says...

I'm a little worried about the story coming to end after only one more episode; they seem to have way too much to wrap up and answer.

It may be that there's a single, simple way to reconcile everything. It does seem that all the questions are ones about origins and destinations on one level or another.

E.g. Where did the old cylons come from? Why were the colonies founded? Why did Earth get destroyed? Why haven't cylons been able to reproduce until Hera? What, if anything, makes Hera special? For that matter, why are they worshiping Greek gods, and naming their cultures after signs of the zodiac? Will anyone survive the confrontation of these two species, or will they merge into one? If so, were they ever really different in any meaningful way? Oh, and is Kara Thrace a cylon? Has she always been one? If so, who made her? Is resurrection merely a technological curiosity, or is that meant to factor into some sort of deeper significance about what really separates human and cylon?

That's a lot to cover in two hours, especially since we have this rescue mission thingy to carry out too, and final character moments, which are usually the main focus of the BSG series.

Then you don't want to know about Adama calling for volunteers for a one-way rescue mission of Hera, who was kidnapped by Boomer and taken to a Cylon colony ship ensconced near a naked singularity. Also, the doctor is Daniel, and Starbuck is his daughter. Adama finds out and blows Starbuck out an airlock and ends up crying his brains out, in the end deciding to abandon Galactica. But he doesn't realize that Kara was "special", and Boomer rescues her while she is making her getaway with Hera. I still don't understand why Starbuck's eyes and back were glowing red while she was floating in space, but I hope we'll find out this week. Oops! I probably should have put this at the beginning of my comment, but !!SPOILER ALERT!!

Did someone twist your arm and force you to watch this? You've got no-one to blame but yourself. You were warned it was a spoiler, yet you still watched it. Then you blame the poster for your ignorance. Class act my friend.. Class act.

Now dft, you're being unfair towards BSG, up to the point of being hypocritical. If one values the show for its merits in terms of allegory, the ethical and moral conflicts and noir like you say you do (extrapolating from your examples), one could be expecting a fitting finale in terms of closure and retained style, not in terms of traditional (and utterly unoriginal) "awesome-go-out-with-a-bang" type of storytelling (which will, of course be served, come on, this is television, the industry of entertainment we're talking about).

I haven't seen the 19th episode yet, but the very idea of Galactica 'dying' - doesn't it have enough finality and noir to it for you? And what are the loose ends that are left? I for one feel like they're addressing these too excessively. They're obviously tying the Hera/Shape of things to come/Opera motif up, as well as the Roslin/Dying leader prophecy by entwining her fate with that of the old girl. No, leaving storylines up in the air isn't something they'll do.

And I'm quite sure they won't do a Sopranos ending, that's just cheating when one can't write themselves out of a corner, which the Galactica writers have already shown they're capable of doing just fine.

As for Daniel - I agree with timtoner that him being Kara's father makes more sense in the universe's mythology, but I'm also assuming they wouldn't introduce such a major character on-screen this late in the series when they're perfectly capable of finding other, if less-rational explanations for Kara's destiny. Again, I might be wrong, not having seen the 19th episode yet.

Don't get your hopes up, the following episode features Adama crying in a fetal position and then deciding to abandon the Galactica (I wish I were joking). You should be thanking us for sparing you all the disappointment of these underwhelming final episodes. Go read a book or something.

You're welcome.
