There's a reason they wait politely and dont jaywalk in Austria (and I'm guessing Germany as well). It's because cars have the right of way and its up to them to let you cross. If you walk out willy-nilly and are hit, it's on you.

Fake to the max, but I did find it funny on my recent trip through Europe that in some countries, people would wait politely at crosswalks and refuse to jaywalk (like Austria and Germany), and in other countries they'd just cross whenever they wanted, lights be damned (like Portugal and especially Italy).

Pretty sure that's no school bus, and the truck driver isn't breaking any traffic laws. So, not only would hitting the child not be murder (which is silly cuz definition of murder..) there would be no crime at all. The child however was jaywalking so...

So some of you Americans honestly believe this is the correct way to police a neighborhood community? Or are you all trolls?

This is close to incarceration for jaywalking or shooting someone for wearing a hoodie and being black.

Look at how many officers and what effort and time it takes to solve the case of a scratched car at a crossroads scene and how they manage to make a meal of it.

At 3 minutes into the video they are exactly one competent cop, two calm sentences and one phone call to parents away from not having to deal with the ensuing fracas. Even if they did everything by the book they will be remembered as assholes.

The message the girl gets is she should have tried harder to get away sooner because cops are pigs (even when they try to do things right and have a camera).

Policing a community is much easier (or only possible?) if people want to cooperate and trust the policemen to not be arrogant douchebags waiting for 15yr old girls to "make their day".

Last I checked, illegal entry is a misdemeanor.

Ans it's only the entry itself. If you enter legally on a temporary visa, and don't leave, that's not a crime. But you will likely not get another visa should you leave.

I get that it's a 'crime', but as a matter of legal seriousness, it's on par with jaywalking or disturbing the peace.

Not that legality and morality are in any way connected, so don't take my statement as anything more than its face value.

(As an aside : As a libertarian, as a matter of principle, I have no problem with people coming and going and having whatever relations with whoever consents to have them. It is, after all, none of my business.)

Why is jaywalking a reason for arrest? It's not forbidden to cross the street here, in the US you make such a big thing of it - but still - should it not just be a fine, like a parking ticket or something?

Interesting stuff, I never knew the origins of the term Jaywalker.
Being the operator of an evil motor vehicle however I do see a flip side to this, uppity pedestrians who seem to think that because motorists are required to stop for pedestrians that they can just stroll out into traffic any time it strikes their fancy.
