Upvote for Maggie "Cheong".
Also, funny how they don't mention the director of Jackie's big break, Drunken Master (hey, he wouldn't become famous outside Hong-Kong for ten more years).

Tennessee Walking Horse Investigation Exposes Cruelty

eric3579 says...

The Humane Society of the United States is out with another damning undercover investigation, this one into the mistreatment of the famed Tennessee Walking Horses, show horses known for their unique four-beat “running walk.”

The investigation found many of the horses to be subjected to a cruel practice known as soring — the intentional infliction of pain to feet and legs to produce an exaggerated gait known as the “Big Lick.”

The video shows Jackie McConnell, one of the sport’s leading trainers, and his stable hands beating horses with wooden sticks and using electric cattle prods on them to make them lift their feet in the pronounced gait judges like to see. McConnell’s staff also apply caustic chemicals to the ankles of the horses and them wrap them with plastic wrap so the chemicals eat into the skin.

“That creates intense pain and then the ankles are wrapped with large metal chains so the horses flinch, or raise their feet even higher,” said the Humane Society’s Keith Dane.

Soring has been illegal for more than 40 years under the federal Horse Protection Act. As a result of the HSUS investigation, McConnell and his associates have been charged with felony conspiracy to violate the HPA, as well as numerous violations of the Tennessee Cruelty to Animals Statute. McConnell is expected to plead guilty to one count. -DW

Crazy awesome fight scene from THE RAID

I like Ebert, but he is way off on this one. I have noticed that in recent years, his tolerance for movies with a lot of violence and death has gone down -- perhaps it's an unwelcome reminder of his own looming mortality. It's unfortunate, because this is a superlative martial arts film, and Ebert has shown a fondness for these types of movies in the past.
And shuac, I think comparing this film -- which has some of the most intricately choreographed, beautifully violent and skillfully shot/edited action that we've seen in years -- to "Ass" is, to put it bluntly, idiotic. It's also condescendingly dismissive of 50+ years of martial arts action cinema, in which this film is easily a milestone -- a culmination of the types of films made by stars like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Donnie Yen. I can agree with Ebert that the characters are (intentionally) thin in this movie, but to imply that there is no artistry or craft at work here is, again, idiotic.
I am going to promote this, because it is awesome.

One question for you, Sarzy. You say this film is a milestone. I'm sure you're right. Can you tell me why this film is a milestone?

Gonna see this on Tuesday, can't wait!

Shuac's quotes are perfect examples of why your typical film critic are simply snobby douche bags. I feel sorry for anyone that cannot just have fun with a simple and sometimes awesomely cheesy action film such as Commando, Road House, Shoot 'em Up, Jackie Chan's films, Ong Bak, etc without lamenting the lack of "appreciation for human dimension, meaning, and morality". I'd gladly see those kind of people get round house kicked in the face, stumble backward, crash through a window, fall down flipping end over end until they crash onto a car 3 stories below

Jackie's fucking awesome...if you think all of his movies are the same, you clearly haven't seen them all. Check out "Little Big Soldier" if you want something different. That may well be his best movie, and nothing like his usual fare.

Personally, I very much enjoy his standard flicks, in part because I know he does all his own stunts, and in part because I like the fact that he clearly doesn't take himself all that seriously. He's more than happy to laugh at himself.
