Hey,
sorry I didn't reply earlier, but I figured since you had gone to all that effort I actually wanted to read everything properly.

First up, that does seem like quite a reasonable level of control on handguns.

Is that a state specific requirement? Because looking at this page that doesn't seem the case for all states.

Personally I don't have a problem with making someone jump through a few hoops to get a gun.

As for the government trying to take over, surely the way to defeat these kinds of rights abuses are through the democratic system?

As for Iraq and Afghanistan, leaving the right or wrong of it aside, the "war" part went exceedingly well. The US rolled in and pretty much crushed any opposition. It's the "peace" they're having trouble with. But in real terms, the US military occupied those countries and despite the undoubted problems they're having with IEDs etc, no-one is really suggesting that the "insurgents" are anywhere even close to a military victory.

But ultimately I believe it is politics (for all it's evils) that will prevent the US becoming a dictatorship not arms.

Jon Stewart on Gun Control

shatterdrose says...

When I hear the argument about hammers, I laugh, because who ever believes that is a dumbass. And then I realize, people actually believe it, and then I'm sad.

Yes, assault rifles are outnumbered by hammers . . . maybe. Actually, BLUNT OBJECTS outnumbers rifles, but that includes bats, bricks, printers, pianos, pipes, candle holders and the whole ensemble of clue.

Now, in reality most murder is between people who know each other. That's why serial killers are more terrifying. They're killing people they don't know, seemingly at random. Which puts the paranoia in the population and people start freaking. Random killings just seem more terrifying. For some reason people just don't expect their mom to kill them. Who knows why, must be some weird fluke or Buddha or something.

The idea that I can go watch a movie with my daughter and some guy with an overloaded assault rifle, body armour etc can come in and just shoot everyone is way more terrifying a prospect than my mother-in-law finally snapping and picking up a knife and stabbing me. First off, I could totally kick her ass. Second, the former I can't do anything about. Despite the "it takes a good man with a gun" bullshit, reality shows otherwise. 9mm versus bulletproof vest, smoke grenade, IED's and assault rifles just doesn't cut it. But I don't play CoD . . .

In regards to the constitution, yeah, when it was written the military and the people had the same access to weaponry. Matter of fact, we didn't even have a standing army. It really was up to the states to get a regulated militia to keep the country safe from invaders. So comparing that to printed newspapers and tv and internet is, well, simple. It's a similar argument most paranoid gun owners use for everything. Let's just take a superficial look and ignore reality. Kind of like real dictators and tyrants taking away 22mm hand guns while pointing their tanks at your house.

I think that's the greatest irony . . . those who wish to own guns to protect themselves from tyrants are blindly following their leaders and scream for murder and revolt, or 1766 will rise again! yadda yadda, are becoming the same puppets they claim they are protecting themselves from. No one saw Hitler coming? Well, he sounded a lot like Beck honestly. So did Stalin, etc. The people who followed them thought they made absolute sense, and then this and that happened and now we all know them as mass murdering fiends.

So again, are we really talking gun control so we have the right to become the fourth reich, or are we really wanting a worthwhile discussion on saving lives?

In Yogi's defense (and yeah, he does tend to wax a bit pissed-off in a wake of seemingly reasonable responses to certain issues) I have a question for ye who would offer similar reactionary quips in the face of alternative notions to current events of dubious import: Does confidence and self-assertion simply scream, "troll" to certain children wet-nursed on internet?

If a differing opinion voiced colorfully and with confidence irks some so into simply shutting down processes and creating convenient boxes, categories and labels, well....I suppose I need to move under a fucking bridge and start exacting tolls from passers-by and, NONE SHALL PASS UNTIL WE ALLLL GET OUR COINS!

Fuck the Royals, and Fuck Britain with her nose up their asses for continuing to live the illusion-It's 2012 people, start placing the blame with the cunts that made the world a ticking IED- They're the mega-ultra-stupid rich, bitch!
What's worse, is they turned all of you into tiny little micro-versions of themselves...the real joke is, we're the joke.

President Bill Clinton on the First Presidential Debate

"Mitt never let our national security get so lax the red chinese swooped in and stole our missile guidance tech." Nixon (R - crook) opened China.

Isn't that what liberals want--"dialogue" with our enemies? Nixon also created the EPA. Pobody's nerfect. The 'crook' who had no knowledge of Watergate and never ordered it, but still stepped down, unlike Slick Willie the convicted felon. Nixon is a statesman by comparison to both Bubba AND Obozo.

"Mitt didn't built bureaucratic walls between law enforcement agencies to hide his own crimes." Bush II (R - derp) built the Homeland Security Department which helped the CIA cover up crimes of torture.

You mean the guy with higher test scores than Kerry? By international law tis only a crime to torture recognized enemy soldiers of an actual nation, not IED-laying sh1tbag terrorists. If it saves American lives, I'm for torturing every last one of them.

"Mitt didn't tell subordinate women, 'Suck this or lose your job'" Clarence Thomas (R- Koch Ind.) did.

Hearsay and bullshit, rebuked testimony, no charges filed. Nice try, though! Nothing brings out the racist in a liberal like a Black conservative, who by the way, is an intellectual giant compared to Obozo's recent affirmative action twins. Oh, and Thomas was never accused of rape like bubba.

I know pointing out facts won't deter qm, it's just fun to show him up as an ill informed redneck.

Facts? Where? Oh, was that your version of facts? You've failed in your mission. Utterly. I expected less--much less--from a liberal. And you delivered. Let me know when you want another keyboard beating.

Mitt never cheated on his wife. Mitt was never disbarred and disgraced. Mitt didn't tell subordinate women, "Suck this or lose your job", and if Mitt did any of these things, he sure wouldn't have in-the-tank, subservient media shills covering his ass like they did this clown.

Hive13 says...

I have a good friend of mine that got hit hard by an IED in Iraq. He lost both his legs and suffered some serious brain injuries. It took him a year just to be able to talk again, but he persevered and recovered as one can from something like that. He eventually got an entry-level job working as a teller at a bank. Within 5 years, he had worked his way up to branch manager. He is now on the short list for the regional manager's slot. He has to work 10x harder than his peers to even be considered, but he does it because he wants to be better than "just a cripple" (his words).

Honestly, a lot of people make excuses for why they can't instead of making strides to make it happen for them. He could have done nothing for the rest of his life and lived off his disability and pension modestly, but he chose to be better than that and worked his ass of for his successes.

Sure, there are people out there that flat out can't work or can't function normally in society, but that is a tiny fraction of the world as a whole.

>> ^alien_conceptWhat about people with moderate learning difficulties, or disabilities? They're able to work, but not a chance in hell they could go into the army and take advantage of what they have to offer, or work in an IT department. I think the only people who believe in this dream are the ones who are lucky enough to have had it happen for them. Not everyone is in the same position as you were or are now. Some people will never be able to have a good job, because they just aren't able.

How Leaks and Politics Threaten National Security

vaire2ube says...

if you watch the training our special forces receive, one has to wonder what recourse besides a suicide bomb is actually plausible to fight such forces.

We have super soldiers with super soldier capabilities and equipment, and so the threat has evolved to match a completely superior combat opponent.

i.e., IEDs and kamikaze attack.

evolution in action, indeed. you can't fight a war on terror.

I went on a manhunt once. I just got back from Nam. I was hitchhiking through Oregon. Next thing I know there's a bunch of cops chasing after me through the woods! I had to take them all out, it was a bloodbath!

That must have been so stressful! I recommend holidays in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Burma.

Stupid. "It's an artillery shell." Are you kidding me? I can't believe these guys haven't had training on recognizing IEDs. Even dumb ol' sillyvilian me knew IEDs were often made with shell casings. Just a stupid brainfart that could have killed him and anybody close by. He done goofed, and he should have got his ass chewed. Maybe they don't get Discovery Channel there, or he hasn't seen "The Hurt Locker" yet.
