The best golfer, probably ever.

BTW: since the talk is about putting things into a hole in the ground...

what's the deal w/the Omaha rally, Bob? There wouldn't have been that many frozen old people if they'd just stop counting them?

or should we wait until Fox, Rush, or the myriad of apologists supporting the president figure out why it was the fan's fault and not the star's?

heard a response, that people should have dressed for the occasion - and not wait for a warm bus ride back. older people forced to walk four miles only to be found wandering half-frozen unable to find their car. mainly because of hypothermia.

so appropriate. orange turning on the orange. the young sacrificing the old. poor planning by the poorly chosen. chaos. disorder. and donnie wouldn't be responsible for any of it.

that's on the nose.

surveying the responses to this snafu...it seems there's no way to fix this.

thought it might have been the president's decision to appear late at a closed event, turned open, in freezing temperatures was a lousy idea. maybe the chaotic challenge of going from 10k to 22k might have been over-optimistic by his rally staff. but the fellow rally-goers want to put the blame on other rally-goers (like president; like lemming).

wasn't don's fault, nor the event organizers, it was don's fans? so the problem was they liked him and his 'people' couldn't gauge the huuuge response? don didn't know. his people didn't know. it was because his fans didn't know better?

okay, get it now.

gee. one would have thought they'd been perfectly warm with all those hoods? bet they rue being p.c. and not burning crosses. that alone should have kept a wide number of them toasty.

Star Trek: Voyager Nothing Human

the real life example were the Nazi hypothermia experiments --the consensus, last I checked, was that the data was not used.

Of course, the truly pointless unethical American study was Tuskegee syphilis progression to dementia sample of African American subjects after there was already a cure for the disease...among other, wildly unethical studies...

Science to the rescue; this is how you rehab a broken back

newtboy says...

Thanks, that's nice of you to say.
Unfortunately, snorkeling up here means subjecting myself to hypothermia, so it probably won't happen much. There will be some while I set up my pond, but I doubt that will be as therapeutic as warm Hawaii waters. Maybe I should move!

I am sorry to hear about your accident; I am glad you finally found a way on your own to "self-rehab" by snorkeling.

El Niño Erosion Leaves Pacifica Apartments On The Brink

SDGundamX says...

Ah, Pacifica. I used to work in the area and would head there on my lunch break. Grab a sandwich from the deli at Safeway and sit on the beach watching the waves roll in while I ate. Water is cold as fuck though. I made the mistake of paddling out without a wetsuit one summer during a heatwave and got hypothermia even though the air temp was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

They've always had problems with erosion there, so this is kinda unsurprising to me. There's really nothing they can do. In the video you can see PCH (Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway) and I wonder how many years it'll be before the erosion is creeping up to that point. I know that just south of Pacifica they've had to close PCH a couple of times to shore up the road because it was in danger of collapsing, and during rain storms it sometimes gets closed due to landslides from the hills next to it.

have you found yourself longing for the apocalypse?

Needs more warnings at the end - May cause poisonous burns, itching, rashes, scars, insects / bites, decapitation, potent hallucinogenic plant experience ego death (this is a good thing), wild fire, sneezing, rashes, pulled muscles, sweating, potential flash flood, tornado, blunt force death (hail storm), suffocation (ie quicksand), dehydration, drowning (helicopter drops retardant on you or otherwise), hypothermia, freezing, lethal stings, booby traps, rednecks, cannibals, serial killers, getting lost and starving...

Domino Style Frozen Lake Rescue Attempt

robbersdog49 says...

Basically not enough of each. The cold person is warmed, but not enough and not in a safe way, and the warm person is chilled, sometimes enough to become hypothermic themselves.

There will be plenty of situations where it does work, but that's the case with lots of potentially dangerous solutions. Sometimes the person will be on the edge of hypothermia, but not too far gone and a nice warm cup of hot chocolate will warm them up enough for them to recover. That isn't the same as saying that a warm cup of hot chocolate is the best way to fix hypothermia. It's almost certainly what the cold person will want, and it's a very obvious answer. For a lot of cases it will be fine, but in a few situations it will be very dangerous.

That's what this is all about, and why it can be counter intuitive. In most mild cases skin to skin contact or a warm drink will help, but in more severe cases either of these things could be deadly. However, in the mild cases it won't hurt to assume the person is worse than they are and warm them slowly. Unless you're absolutely sure how bad the hypothermia is its much safer to assume the worst.

People aren't very good at assessing things in an emergency situation. This is one of the reasons the CPR training has changed in recent years. They used to spend a long time teaching us how to find a pulse and how to check breathing, but the time spent rafting around with that in an emergency could kill someone. So now you just assume the person isn't breathing and their heart isn't beating and go for it. Giving CPR to someone who doesn't need it is less likely to kill them than delaying CPR with someone who does.

So, which is it? Did the skin to skin contact heat up the at risk individual too quickly or was it not effective, rather chilling the assistant? I don't see how it can be both ways.

Wolf Rescued From The Icy Limentra River - (Northern Italy)

Jinx says...

Sounds like the wolf was in pretty poor shape before it even got in the river.

Apparently they shot it with a tranq dart, which seemed to me to be pretty stupid. I would have thought the last thing you wanted to do to a weak, starving wolf with hypothermia is put it to sleep. The wolf ended up swimming back out into the middle of the river before falling asleep and going into cardiac arrest. but then I'm not a Vet and it seemed to turn out ok in the end, so well done to them.

Tough Mudder - A Run Like No Other

Stu says...

I just completed the TM in the Tristate this past november. I've never shook so violently from near hypothermia in my entire life. Run time Temp was 47 degrees. It was by far the most awesome thing I have ever done and it was the most organized thing I've seen. 18,000 racers going off without a hitch. The obstacles range from hard to easy. The 10k volt running field was a little rough with no shirt on but the race is definitely worth it.

It's also for a great cause. For anyone wanting or thinking about doing it, I recommend it 100%. The obstacles can look scary, but there was not one point in the entire race where if you needed help, anyone from a teammate to a random stranger would gladly help you under or over it. The camaraderie is amazing. Like it was said above, it isn't for the feint of heart. It is still at it's core a 12 mile run, so definitely get some cardio in before hand but you have alot of time to do it.

I can't praise this race enough. Do it! Do it now!
