Gotta love the guy with the Christian HillBilly hat. I guess if you know you don't have two brain cells to rub together you might as well proclaim it to the world with pride.

Oxdottir was the major objector in that thread and he didn't end up agreeing with the argument, he ended up conceding that he could not win, even saying that he was, “severely disappointed” in sift members. Either way, my mentioning of that is no more than austere and saying “you can’t make people care” in my last comment was for light-hearted polemics.

But I do believe there is a difference between responding to the morally objectionable, and seeking out the objectionable in order to act as masthead for a mass inquisition. That was my problem with my original (and unfortunate) interpretation of the post but it continues to be my problem with the version you wish us to see. But you can do whatever you want; it’s just not my cup of tea.

Not calling anyone a hypocrite, just trying to make a point and maybe win a few hearts and minds. And yes, we really can change peoples' minds and effect change- it's been done several times. Have a look at this post for one of the best debates ever on the sift... http://www.videosift.com/video/Eyes-Wide-Shut-teaser

Those video's are no good. I got confused by your original title (the good, the blah blah) and then further comments (such as Dag's) about marines becoming enraged by stress.

I agree with you, but other then getting admin involved, there's really nothing you can do. You can't make people care. I guess calling them hypocrites is something... good job.

Redsnow- you're missing the point. This is not about Marines, it's about animal abuse. More than a few postings on the sift depict animal abuse, but it has been considered acceptable because the animals in question are scary or creepy.

See these examples: http://www.videosift.com/video/Scorpion-vs-Black-Widow-Intense-sheesh

These are the two most recent examples.

I don't really understand the point of this post. Sure, we can all say something here, it hits our nerves, but is there anything constructive that can come of this? Does anyone really think that all marines are sociopaths because of this video? Maybe I should post a video of a hillbilly firebombing a cage of squirrels, call it intellectual debate and brand myself the hero of dissonance and patriotic morality.

This is nothing but shock value and it cheapens the site. I’m not trying to give you a hard time blankman, you were concerned and wanted to bring this to attention, but lets step back, think, and realize there is nothing here but empty cannonfodder.

Classic movie 'Deliverance' -- hillbilly ambush scene

It's never too early to start on Coke! (Blog Entry by dag)

swampgirl says...

HAHA this is great. YDJ is right about the south. I grew up in S.C. and EVERYONE drank Mt. Dew. After school we stopped by the little Ma and Pop ran store to buy a comicbook and Mt. Dew. Yeahhhh.... we'd dig down in the fridge to find one w/ ice in it, and if you looked hard enough you could find one of the old style bottles w/ the hillbillies w/ guns on them. (for all you kiddies out there...all sodas were in bottles )
Even today when we all know better than to give our kids all this crap, kids in my hometown drink Mt Dew by the gallons. I heard that there is an additive in the yellow drink that makes the flavor linger in the mouth longer to make the drinker want more. That additive adheres to the teeth over time staining them. The dentist said he could always tell if the kid is a Mt. Dew drinker. Gross huh?

I would like to add that soda back in the days of this ad above did use real cane sugar and not high fructose corn syrup, so I bet it tasted better. High Fructose corn syrup is an evil substance that should be obliterated from public use.

I'm not advocating soda...just reminiscing I'm sooooo glad I'm out of the south

Silly Symphony - The Grasshopper and the Ants (1934)

rottenseed says...

oooooo a classic allegory in cartoon form! I love that the bible quoting grasshopper is made to look like a fool as he depends on the philosophy of "the good book". Furthermore, it's even better that he has this backwoods hillbilly accent to go along with his archaic ideas.

oh yea and the queen is pretty cute.

Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys: Blue Prelude (awesome)

rickegee says...

From famoustexans.com

Bob Wills hated the hillbilly image associated with country music. But then, this was a different kind of country music anyway. If he hadn't played a fiddle, no one would have connected country to the Playboys' music at all. It was really jazz; jazz that portrayed a dignified South, with flowing fiddles and classy, sometimes brassy, arrangements. Their rags, breakdowns, Dixieland tunes, and swingin' blues were an uplifting beacon of light in otherwise hard, depressed times of the 1930s.

The Playboys usually appeared in cowboy dress attire. No sequins or overalls, this was a sophisticated outfit. Bob's look was that of a well-dressed bandleader, but one from Texas. His cowboy hat, cigar, and fiddle were all part of his trademark appearance.

'Bob was a stylish, western rogue,' says Ray Benson, leader of Asleep At The Wheel, Western Swinging Bob Wills disciples for the past quarter century. 'He danced onstage, he was outrageous. He strutted like a peacock, unheard of back in those days.' In all other respects, he led a Big Band just like Tommy Dorsey, in a presentation that was downright orchestral - except Bob conducted with a fiddle bow.
