CERN scientists break the speed of light with neutrinos

juliovega914 says...

>> ^Ornthoron:

The thing is, we don't know the mass of the neutrino. If it has a tachyonic nature, i.e. negative mass squared, it could break Lorentz symmetry while still satisfying Einstein's equations.

>> ^juliovega914:
If this measurement turns out to be true, we basically have to restart physics.

Again, not necessarily. It would be a ground breaking discovery and would certainly raise a lot of questions...but then I did perhaps one of the most brain melting experiments with results that appear to contradict theory and common sense when I was 14 years old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-slit_experiment

No, it would be a HUGE discovery! One of the biggest ever! and it would completely redefine our modern theory!
If a massive particle moves faster than the speed of light, that means the Lorentz factor for calculating the energy of the particle will be complex! (gamma = c/squrt(c^2-v^2), for v>c, gamma is complex). Do any of you have any fucking idea what that means?

I'm pretty sure negative mass would still result in complex energy, because the Lorentz transformation factor would still be proportional to 1/i or -i. Complex mass, however, would allow for the energy to be real (which has been theorized as being possible), but that introduces a whole new problem of trying to conceptualize complex mass.

And on a side note, the first ever physical observation of nonpostive/nonreal mass would be groundbreaking in its own right.

Zero Punctuation: Deus Ex

dannym3141 says...

Here's the skinny - deus ex is very good at incorporating your choice into the storyline, so you think there was no choice. Good example, at one point in the new game you get to either let someone die (they tell you to) or you can work it so they survive. First time, i didn't even notice. Second time, i tried to save them and got a different story out of it but it was seamless both ways, i wouldn't have known it was a choice.

Whilst i agree with the fact that it didn't beat any other game (baldur's gate, diablo, etc.) remember that you're comparing it with several games at the same time; it's not as good as fallout at being an rpg but it isn't a pure rpg, etc.

It's a pretty good game in conclusion, though it probably is a tad overhyped. New one's good fun too, but again not groundbreaking to me. Doesn't have to be, if it's good enough, and it is.

Edit: That second deus ex was shit though, if you ask me. Glad they pulled it back with this one.

Zero Punctuation: Duke Nukem Forever (for real this time)

JiggaJonson says...

@spoco2 yeah but those were all things we already knew going in. We knew the game wasn't delayed because of some epic secret something, the mismanagement has been widely publicized for years now.

Acting like you were EXPECTING some kind of groundbreaking something when you knew the game was delayed and fraught with problems because of mismanagement, to me, means you're just another sheep jumping on the "12 YEARS FOR THIS?!!?" bandwagon. And that's just dishonest and unfair imho.

Marshall Double Fail at Canadian Grand Prix

CreamK says...

Yeah but we needed this chaos. The previous season were so dull that i didn't even watch all the races, something i haven't done since 1991. There has always been these watershed moments in F1; teams coming up with groundbreaking inventions and FIA regulating them.. Just think ground effect, active suspensions, turbos all of them effectively changing the sport at the time. This is not the first time FIA introduces new stuff but this time they made the cars faster instead slower, as the main trend has been.

But the main thing is to listen to drivers and they all like this season a lot! Chaos brings life to stagnation..

Linkin Park: Burning In The Skies -- Music Video

kceaton1 says...

BTW, @ghark I don't really like this video either and that was never my opinion. In fact that is what set me off a bit as I never said it was a good video at all--this happens to be one of those videos that I'd gladly add to "Audiosift" when we get it (no video-just audio). The video has little to do with the song and is obviously using CGI and slow motion to grab the MTV crowd (I stopped watching MTV when it stopped playing music; sometime around the end of "Beavis & Butthead" -- even Mike Judge had songs in that, atleast) It's a passable video, but nothing else; i.e., "...it gets the job done.". The video for "Waiting For The End" is far better, visually, yet still is "context lacking". Their old videos were better in a lot of ways. I'd like to see a merger of the old and the new. But, it suffers from "Linkin Park video Syndrome" that started somewhere around the first Transformers movie.

A lot of these newer videos all borrow from that first video "Transformers" video, CGI and artistically (probably all done by the same people and crew). That's fine, but I agree it's not groundbreaking or anywhere near it. If you want that go watch this one:

TDS: The Informant!

I don't think that was what John was saying. I was under the impression he isn't impressed with the Wikileaks (or at least the latest round of leaks) and doesn't think they are as big a deal as the government and media make them out to be as lots of them are things we more or less knew or at least suspected.
>> ^direpickle:
I don't agree with Jon, here. It seems weird for him to suddenly come out on the side of, "Meh, we all know the government sucks. Why bother trying to change it?"

Exactly. These leaks while interesting are well below say The Pentagon Papers leak which is what the other leaks were being compared to very wrongly. Jon is pointing out that a lot of this stuff is idle chatter or crap we already knew...nothing groundbreaking. The Medias reaction is interesting because of how awful they think this is...what they're doing is trying to say that any sort of leaks are a horrible thing and everyone should be upset by them. It's propaganda, at least that's what it used to be called.

I'm not saying that this vid has the kind of graphics that would entice me to pay full price at the box office, nor am I throwing down high-fives for sup-par work or uncool people. I'm sure 110 days of rendering time could have helped to give it the kind of polish that could be up to today's standards, and yours.

I enjoyed this piece because I appreciated the story told by this animation. Better graphics wouldn't hurt, but it was good enough to carry that story.

There are countless examples off great storytelling and enjoyable animations that don't rely on billion polygon counts or dynamic lighting. Whether that's Don Hertzfeldt or Dottie Goes to School or Groundbreaking Music Videos.

Nevertheless, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion, and welcome to focus on what you like in videos and animations. I just wanted to share where I was coming from too.

Also, good for you for getting your name out there and getting work in your field. I know a lot of creative-types and I know it ain't the easiest line of work to get into.

i'm a jr. comp artist. it's a day job, not a passion, so i've had no need or interest in doing a pro bono project of any kind. the last film i did comp work on was the new karate kid (i did some roto for clash of the titans, but that doesn't really count). i'm currently working on eureka, which is a silly show, but lots of fun to work on.
comping all CG shots is usually easier as you (generally) don't have to roto, pull green screens, camera tracking, regraining, etc.
this is a whole other league, but it was done by one person and effectively no budget:

Halo: Reach "Deliver Hope" EXTENDED Live Action Trailer

VoodooV says...

I don't know much more simply I can put it. I liked the game, it's just not deserving of all the praise it gets. People treat the franchise as if it's this groundbreaking masterpiece. It's just not. It's a decent, solid game...but that's it.

I'm not required to justify my opinion because it's just that, an opinion. I'm not asserting it's superior to anyone else's opinion. Take it or leave it.

BBC Covers New Leak Of Afghanistan Documents

Yogi says...

People are comparing this directly to the Pentagon Papers. I was thinking they're not up to that groundbreaking simply because we've already had the Pentagon Papers...so we have something to compare this to. Never the less it's still important that this was leaked and is being reported on (Despite an editorial I read in the New York Times).

Hopefully this will give Obama the push he needs to get out sooner and end this very illegal War of Aggression. Which by the way a War of Aggression is considered by the Nuremburg tribunal as the supreme international crime because it includes within it all the atrocities that come after.

It could be big if you think about the whole metadata thing and where that might lead.

Having something that works visually and allows grouping/notes takes it to another level. It's a more engaging way of working and a helluva lot more useful than clicking on bookmarks.

Currently I mark sites with Delicious and I know I might need to reference them if I'm working on a project or have an idea. It's useful and reassuring. But it's not really great to work with and I can't do anything of the things posited here. I wonder if adding Mind Maps and visual links to files on my system could work - you could capture all your online and offline stuff in one place.

So after a while, with all the coming extensions, Firefox is, perhaps, becoming an OS. if you add search and working with contacts you've got something that could be very, very powerful. Isn't that what Chrome and the Chrome OS is aiming for?

The other consideration is how to back this up and do it securely. I know about Firefox Synch but haven't tried it yet.

Cool tool. Not sure if creating "groups" of tabs is necessarily groundbreaking, but certainly useful.

Wow, did I just sound like an indignant internet nerd or what? Sigh. I've got to get off the internet.
