The 500 Trillion Watt Laser (The World's Most Powerful)

Hybrid says...

That's exactly the point. We know that nuclear fusion can give off VAST amounts of energy, but it's harnassing that energy and converting it to electricity that is the key. Every scientist knows that nuclear fusion is a holy grail, and solving it would solve the planet's energy requirements forever.>> ^raverman:

I know this is cool... but the "Why" escapes me.
What's the point?
"Stars" are enormous balls of ignited fuel. Spending huge amounts of tax payer money to concentrate sufficient energy to reach ignition gains us what? An achievement badge on Xbox live? then what? you have to keep the lasers on to sustain any reaction?
Nuclear Fusion is only useful if it produces more energy than it takes to create it.

Her voice is almost as stupid as she is with rambling about things no one cares about, including her.

Clearly you haven't learned from last time. Don't make me burn you again!
'cos I'll do it, and then you feel feel the pain of the scorn of the internets!

again.

heh, upvote for reminding me about the frenchies from Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail.

I love how she bashes the entire scientific community one minute, and does a 360 for the last minute and praises science as the holy grail of this fantastic new energy alternative which has yet to be invented.

Bravo..

Somebody needs to sit one of these birds down in front of Star Wars or Monty Python' Search for the Holy Grail, or Napolean Dynamite or some other movie that is often quoted. My vote is for star wars though because of all the iconic sounds.

"Remember laserdisc?" An AVGN review.

Croccydile says...

Well he got it exactly right, LaserDisc is great for collecting... but hardly a convenient format anymore. I think one of the nerd holy grails is the Star Wars discs because they are the "best quality available" of the original unedited movies. There are a few of my DVDs I remember the commentary track they speak of it as "commentary for this LaserDisc" so I imagine they were borrowed here and there. Or, unique commentary on LaserDisc vs. DVD (Blade Runner?)

Image quality is arguable and there is no real winner between LD and DVD. LD in video is still a composite signal and any LD player with S-Video is just running it through an internal comb filter. Technically its commercial quality VHS on a disc. Some movies remastered for HD and DVD like Ben-Hur there is a significant difference though, like no still image jittering.

But hey, can you really argue how cool it is to pull out a huge disc like that? (As long as its does not suffer from laser rot in the meantime)

I responded to your thread reply. But to add onto you an other thought, the obvious lagging technology technologically wise are batteries. We can produce massive amounts of energy but we're terrible at holding and storing that power for future use through electricity. We don't have battery banks to store electricity from wind mills and solar which would make them a constant supplier rather than an erratic one. Anyway, I look forward to you're next comment.

Check my thread reply, wonder if you've heard about it.

In reply to this comment by geo321:
yeah, There hasn't been a big jump in battery technology for a long time. If that happened it would be a real game changer.>> ^budzos:
Solar is the energy of the future. Storage is the main problem right now.

geo321 says...

Are you talking about Fracking? Or AKA Hydrolic Fracturing?>> ^budzos:
Hear me and remember this: Although solar is the logical move, we're going to see many nations start up large-scale methane extraction plants along the contintental shelves. We'll need better catalytic converters, but I'm sure that will be worked out (I hope).
The method for extracting useable methane from clathrate deposits? You pump CO2 into the ice. So it's going to be easy to paint it as a green solution. Trust me on this one...
There is a major danger of massive methane eruptions, think city-sized volumes of methane suddenly erupting from the ocean floor and becoming part of the atmosphere. Aside from that I think it might be the thing that lets internal-combustion fueled capitalism thrive long enough to completely fuck our species.
