Angelina Jordan - Bohemian Rhapsody - AGT Champions

moonsammy says...

I... kinda hate it actually. She has a good voice certainly, but all the extra warbling (I'm sure there's a correct term, but I don't know it) doesn't really seem to add anything to the original.

Sesame Street: Grover At the Movies

Active Sexism on MSNBC - Mika is FURIOUS.

Stormsinger says...

>> ^Phreezdryd:

Joe doesn't seem to be listening to Mika at the beginning, and derails her comments by saying he thinks the focus on binders is lame. Over 17 minutes in and that other guy restates what Mika said, and finally Joe gets it. I'd be a little frustrated too.
I don't know how distracting being on a set with cameras and people talking in your earpiece is, but I'm going to assume that's part of what makes for conversations where people don't seem to be listening to each other.

Maybe...or it could just be that the positions tend to go to attractive people with good voices, and brains just aren't considered important. Given the state of television these days, my money is on the latter.

New Channel Proposal: "Skillful" (User Poll by dag)

Boise_Lib says...

>> ^speechless:

> ^Deano:
it should be home to the exceptional. There are lots of good guitar players but those doing something particularly skillful or unusual could be added. Ultimately the channel owner will have to be strong and make sure that not every half-decent guitar solo is included.

This is why I think this channel is too subjective. Having a channel "owner" decide which piece of music (or anything else) demonstrates "skill" is not really helpful unless the idea is to create a personal list of what that channel owner thinks is skillful.

You bring up good points that apply to the whole system of channels as it exist now--however I think that @Deano has answered them.

I vote yes. (that's the way the system is--we have to roll with it).

(note: don't be "speechless" you have a good voice--
I hope to hear more from you )

Jon Stewart debates libertarian judge Andrew Napolitano

heropsycho says...

I like having Libertarians in discussions because they're a good voice to have because market forces are potential solutions to various issues, because sometimes we do turn away from market forces too soon. However, the philosophy just flat breaks down as any other philosophy does, and I think this debate kinda proves it. Stewart keeps coming back to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which forced public businesses open to the public to desegregate. According to libertarian philosophy, the free market should have ended segregation by citizens who were conscientious objectors to boycott any public business that was practicing racial segregation. If you notice in the debate, Napolitano skirts this when pressed, and kept saying the gov't should have desegregated gov't institutions, but that skirts the issue of what should have been done in privately owned public businesses. It's a point where libertarian philosophy breaks down, and true hardcore libertarians either know it and try to avoid it because it is so unpalatable to the general population, or they will outright admit that would be their stance and advocate for it.

Public schools are another example. The simple fact of the matter is the general population was not generally educated until the gov't began public schools, and society is all the better for it.

Dawkin's books are extremely well written and contain a vast amount of well researched and thought out knowledge. I am looking forward to reading this to my kids.
What I really want is an audio book of this latest book read by Dawkin's himself in that delicious accent.

That is how I consumed his last book, he does have a good voice for audio books. It's read by him and his wife, time lady Romana. Here you go.

Dane Cook confronts Louis C.K. about joke stealing

poolcleaner says...

>> ^Aniatario:

I remember listening to Dane Cook a lot coming out of Highschool, me and my buddies listened to his albums and laughed our asses off. Sure the jokes weren't particularly clever, I always found his energy much more funny than his material.
Good voices, strong gestures and a half decent narrative. He knew how to tell a good story.
I found him less and less funny as I got older but all of a sudden it just became "cool" to hate Dane Cook and a lot of my friends (including myself) jumped on the band wagon.

There are a lot of people that discount the energy of a joke because they can't quantify it in their little world of OCD intellectualism.

Seriously? I've seen plenty of videos of people that can't sing. This guy isn't the best in the world, but he's pretty good.>> ^DerHasisttot:
Strange. A few days ago I already commented on the same vid that the guy can't sing. But I can't find it, so this is not a dupe :-)

Agreed. For that matter, a huge number of the most popular and influential musicians of all time can't sing very well.

Personality and style is much more important than having a "good" voice, and Fredde has it in spades.

Sarah Palin Destroyed By Conservatives

probie says...

^For me at least, it's his enunciation and the way he seeks favor. He's a very lazy speaker at times, slurring his vowels and consonants together. Nothing that a good voice coach and some practice under his belt can't fix; so that his T's pops and his S's don't sound like Z's, etc.

Regarding his attitude, specifically in this clip, he goes from delivering the information to "I'm going to ingratiate myself to the viewer by being funny" with the line: "We're talking cage match! Here comes the elbow!", etc. He loses the intelligent argument by trying to use an less-than-intelligent delivery and analogy. Maybe that works for some, but not me. If he's going to zing someone, then stay on target; Olbermann was good at doing that.

Oh and it's about time that some of the Right is waking up to that celebrity whore monster. Sadly, only some.
