Daffy Duck is a Lazy Metal Wizard

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

I also don't like the show - but mostly because it just isn't FUNNY. I've watched entire episodes and never so much as chuckled. It just doesn't have any real zip. The rebooted Scooby Doo cartoon has more humor in it. And what they are doing to Bugs Bunny is just a crime. He has gone from being a wise-guy protagonist to being a flavorless straight-man. He isn't funny at all.

But I have to disagree (a little) on Daffy. Daffy was only the 'clever, crazy' character for about a third of his animated shorts - and those were all in the beginning of his career as a character. After a while, he shifted from 'crazy/clever' into a variety of roles. Heck - he was even the 'bad guy' in a lot of the Speedy Gonzalez shorts.

I agree with you. I liked him a lot better when he was absolutely zonkers. Some of my favorite DD shorts are the ones where he is an obnoxious, loony pest and Porky Pig is the frustrated by what he's doing. Those were where Daffy was at his best.

The video is OK. The show really just blows chunks. It takes some of the funniest cartoon characters America ever created, and turns them into an episode of Seinfeld without the humor. Hopefully they figure this out at some point and fix it. I like the Road Runner / Wiley shorts though - they actually are funny and keep the characters true.

José González - Heartbeats (The Knife cover)

hpqp says...

Nope, not a dupe. The other one is the aired spot, one minute long (and low quality to boot). This one has the whole song and additional footage. For me this is more a music video for José González than a commercial.

Pitchfork: Last question: tell me about the decision to let Jose Gonzalez's cover of "Heartbeats" be the soundtrack to that Sony Bravia ad.

KD: We've never sold any of our own performed tracks to any commercials, so it was very hard for us. It doesn't really feel that good, but the question came when we were in the middle of Silent Shout, and we didn't have any money or anything, so it made it possible to continue working on the album, the videos and the live show. It made it possible to do quite a lot, but at the same time, it's dirty money.

I wonder how Knife feels about their song being used for such a huge advertising campaign given that they are so anti-music industry and all...

Hannity Tries To Fake Out Michael Moore And Fails

timtoner says...

Any perception of the US medical system being superior to Cuba faded when I read that one of the arguments that the lawyers representing Elian Gonzalez's father made was that, medically speaking, Elian had a much greater chance of surviving to age 10 in Cuba than he did in the United States.

That's... just... humbling.

Bill Maher - New Rules (Sept.18,2009)

Conservatives supported Michael Steele, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Bobby Jindal, and Alberto Gonzalez, so the claim that this is about skin color seems a little more convenient than it seems logically consistent. Colin Powell did take heat when he endorsed a Democratic politician, but that's expected.

2 Live Crew - Fuck Martinez

Throbbin says...

From Wikipedia:

As Nasty As They Wanna Be and "Me So Horny" controversy
The group released their album As Nasty As They Wanna Be in 1989, which also became the group's most successful album, largely because of the single "Me So Horny", which was popular in spite of little radio rotation, thanks, in part, to prevalent play on MTV. The song was based on a quote from a Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and took a sample from Mass Production's Firecracker. This album was also produced by Mr. Mixx.
The American Family Association did not think the presence of a "Parental Advisory" sticker was enough to adequately warn listeners of what was inside the case. Jack Thompson, a lawyer affiliated with the AFA, met with Florida Governor Bob Martinez and convinced him to look into the album to see if it met the legal classification of obscene. In 1990 action was taken at the local level and Nick Navarro, Broward County sheriff received a ruling from judge Mel Grossman that probable cause for obscenity violations existed.[2]
Navarro warned record store owners that selling the album may be prosecutable. 2 Live Crew then filed a suit against Navarro. That June, Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled against the album, declaring it obscene and illegal to sell. Charles Freeman, a local retailer, was arrested two days later, after selling a copy to an undercover police officer. This was followed by the arrest of three members of 2 Live Crew after they performed some material from the album at a live performance held at the Futura Night Club in Hollywood Florida. They were acquitted soon after. In 1992, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit overturned the obscenity ruling from Jose Gonzales, and the Supreme Court of the United States refused to hear Broward County's appeal. A notable feature of the case was the distinguished literary critic and now Harvard University professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. as an expert witness on behalf of the defendants. He argued that the material that the county alleged was profane, actually had important roots in African-American vernacular, games, and literary traditions and should be protected.
As a result of the controversy, As Nasty As They Wanna Be sold over two million copies. It peaked at #29 on The Billboard 200 and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A few other retailers were later arrested for selling it as well. Later hard rock band Van Halen sued over an uncleared sample of their song "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" in the 2 Live Crew Song "The Fuck Shop". The publicity then continued when George Lucas, owner of the Star Wars universe, successfully sued Campbell for appropriating the name "Skywalker" for his record label, Luke Skywalker Records. Campbell changed his stage name to Luke (and changed the record label's name to Luke Records) and the group released an extremely political follow up album, Banned in the USA after obtaining permission to use an interpolation of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. 2 Live Crew paraphernalia with the Luke Skywalker or Skywalker logos are usually sought after as collector's items.

Senator imitates Ricky Ricardo in front of Sotomayor.

quantumushroom says...

It's derogatory because a Supreme Court nominee has to be subjected to low brow ethnic humor that was itself unnecessary, a non sequitur.

There are countless examples of outright racist vitriol from our friends on the left aimed at any and all non-White conservatives.

It doesn't matter that Sotomayor is a woman, because the gay marriage advocates have proved there's "no difference" between the sexes. The genetic lottery of her Hispanic-ness also means nothing...wasn't Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez also Hispanic? No, he doesn't count.

Sotomayor is opposed for being an activist on the bench and general dumb-ass with an unimpressive record. She's not alone, as the Supreme Dorks are one of the most spoiled and ignorant welfare classes in America.

I'll give her this: she's more qualified to be President than the Kenyan-born communist.

A good interview with nobel laureate Paul Krugman on Salon today (Blog Entry by dag)

Farhad2000 says...

I don't think thats going to happen, the Right simply has a better system of disseminating false information and turning the topic, something we have seen demonstrate flawlessly over the last 8 years. I mean I talked to a citizen the other day and she had totally forgotten about the abysmal hearings done with Alberto Gonzalez.

I expect a tactic acceptance on the right for now, then slowly over the years a wonderful Wiemar backstab that neatly blames this on Clinton and Obama while saying that Bush was in a difficult time of war and terrorism. Kinda of what was done with the whole rhetoric surrounding the Vietnam war.

Progressives really suck at having their message transmitted nor do they have enough sources pushing such views through. Most media outlets besides Fox are too scared to take any kind of stances. And Blogs? Well I think Blogs are just as much as a problem because of balkanization. I mean shit I read NRO, Red Corner, BlackFive and Powerline and am fucking shocked and not surprised at all that people like QM exist.

Oh and didn't you notice that Bush is being written off already as a RINO? Republican In Name Only.
