Vox: Why drugs cost more in America.

Sagemind says...

Seven executives of top pharmaceutical companies were grilled before a congressional panel Tuesday about the nation's skyrocketing drug prices

Sen. Ron Wyden, the ranking member of the committee, blasted Big Pharma as "morally repugnant" and accused the companies of operating in an "unacceptable" way. He grew testy when he believed the executives weren't being forthcoming about reducing list prices.

"All of this other stuff is window dressing," Wyden snapped. "You are stonewalling on the key issue."

At one point, he pressed the chairman and CEO of AbbVie, maker of the arthritis drug Humira, which, according to a recent New York Times story, has doubled in list price since 2012, from about $19,000 a year to $38,000. Wyden wanted to know whether the company makes money on drugs in Germany and other Westernized nations where patients pay, on average, 40% less than Americans.

"Yes, we do," CEO Richard Gonzalez said.
If that's the case, Wyden said, "you can do the same thing in the United States."

"How is that not gouging the American consumer?" he asked. "You are willing to sit by and hose the American consumer and give breaks to those overseas."

Iraq War Veteran Explains Decision to End His Life

brycewi19 says...

Putting, subject matter of this video aside, I had a HUGE problem with the lack of respect both hosts Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez was showing their guests, Young and his wife by not addressing them after they spoke and cutting them off.
Gonzalez, I believe rudely, would simply address Donahue after Young would speak, without even a recognition of the words he just spoke, let alone a follow-up question.
And Goodman straight up cut off Young's wife during the interview.
Even as a liberal myself, I can start to understand the conservative's argument that liberals are agenda driven.
Compassion for Mr. Young was not very present with these two hosts, just the agenda to stop the war. That bothered me, because both could have been accomplished.

Where I saw him was a very small, intimate setting as well. That type of atmosphere makes it even better.

i've been able to see him (in a church with amazing acoustics), him opening for and then playing with zero 7, and junip which was at a very small movie theatre and was akin to being high on some fantastic warm drugs. everything he does is gold.>> ^evil_disco_man:
>> ^kir_mokum:
these guys are fucking amazing live.

Got to see Jose Gonzalez live, and agree - he's one of those artist/singers that sounds even better live.

Yeah, I actually figured that but Speedy's an easy target for people with no sense of humour- I'm sure this Mayor fits that category.

Not sure if you misunderstood me, as I wasn't knocking or "censoring" Speedy Gonzalez. FWIW, the Warner Brothers cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s are the quality standard that I compare all over animations to. And no doubt some of them have blatantly racist or ethnically insulting scenes and characters, which were viewed as acceptable back then.

My comment was that it would fit right in with the mayor's taco remark, to act like being a fan of Speedy Gonzalez would help build bridges to the modern day Latino community in East Haven.

Wow....just....wow. I live near New Haven and have read about this quote but this is the first I'm seeing the footage. At least he didn't say "I might have tacos and then watch a Speedy Gonzalez retrospective".

Don't you knock Speedy Gonzales! That dude rocks! He's won at least one more Academy Award than any of us ever will. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_Gonzales
The world of America was bigoted and rife with ethnic stereotypes at the time. Those views were just as wrong then as they are now, but to censor the mouse is the same as pretending that those views never existed. Disney pretends that "Song of the South" was never made, but that's a mistake as well.

He's quite music oriented like you. I've told him where to go when he visits here next time

You'd be quite correct then, I don't mind at all. I didn't think a whole lot of the video, but the song makes up for it.

I actually thought I'd visited edm's pqueue, but when I checked there are all these cool vids that I have never seen : I've voted up some of his sifted ones, so I must've checked out his queue instead of his pqueue, or just got confused.

Seeing as your highest voted vid is Jose Gonzalez, I thought it likely that you wouldn't mind helping this through :
