Giant Russian Hoovercraft Action

skinnydaddy1 says...

Ok, The Russians built something I'm generally impressed by. I assume it was a response to the US's LCAC. Looks like they only built 9 while the US has 91. Defiantly looks to be a better design than the US's. Always loved Hovercraft and whats the latest advancement in them? A bloody golf cart.......

Rocket Powered Golf Club.

Porksandwich says...

Looked more like someone put a firework on it and hoped it'd look convincing. But I'd watch golf if they put rockets on their clubs, golf carts and stuff. Mostly for the injuries and bloopers.

Hell put them on their stuff and let some random guy in the crowd pick when to fire them off via remote. That'd be fun to watch.

I consider golf a game, not a sport. Every dictionary has a slightly different definition, but they all agree that a sport involves physical exertion, skill and competition against another individual or team. Strictly speaking, golf only meets one of those requirements, skill. The physical exertion is subjective, the most physical aspect of golf is walking to/from the golf cart. Golf is not always played as a competition, and can be played by one's self.
Do you consider billiards or a sport? It's hitting little balls into holes, so basically golf without the walking. Like golf, it requires skill and can be played competitive or alone. I looked up billiards in the 4 most popular online dictionaries and they all refer to it as a game, not a sport.

Just playing the devil's advocate here - basketball is just throwing bigger balls into holes. Basketball can be played alone, competition is not always part of the game of basketball. By your definition of a sport, the only standard that golf does not meet is physical exertion. If I were to play golf at a level of physical activity that met your standards for a sport (full contact golf perhaps?), would you then accept it as a sport?

I hate golf. This video gives me hope for the future of golf. Too bad it won't ever happen.

Why not? I'm not into golf, or any sports really. But golf is clearly a sport.
I googled "golf is not a sport" to see if there was some comedic or pop culture reference to do with that phrase but simply found a bunch of rednecks justifying your statement.
So in your own words, why is golf not a sport?

TED-the lost art of debate

sineral says...

I have to say he's wrong on a number of points.

For one, sports rules are arbitrary. In any competitive game, the only purpose of the rules is to provide an agreed upon environment in which people can compete, in order to make scores easy to tally. For example, imagine basketball with no rules, a player takes a ball from one end of a court to another without dribbling and shoots and makes it. How many points should that be worth? How about using a ladder to make the basket, or any one of the limitless number of other ways a person might come up with on the fly while playing? By having all the competitors agree to a set of rules, regardless of what those rules are, it's possible to referee the game and determine a winner. You can take any game, make arbitrary changes to the rules, and all you've done is create a different game. From chess, to poker, golf, football, curling, or anything else, the only difference is the rule set. Take volleyball, make a few a tweaks, and you have sepak takraw. People might find one rule set more aesthetically pleasing to watch or fun to compete in than another, but that is completely subjective. There are an infinite number of possible rule sets, and if there were infinite people you could find somebody to enjoy each one of them.

Also, it's more than the essential nature of a thing that matters. Nonessential parts can have effects on the essential ones. The golf cart thing is the perfect example. Walking may not be an essential part of the game, but the fatigue it produces has an effect on swinging the club which is an essential part. It's easy to imagine a person unable to walk, but still able to swing a club with force an accuracy. So being disabled does not disadvantage this person on the essential parts of the game. This person spends most of his time on a golf cart, exerting little energy, and shaded from the sun. The other players do a lot of walking, getting tired, sunburned, sweat in their eyes, etc. That could definitely have an effect on the essence of the game.

So the question is then, which is more important: letting golf be defined as having the particular set of rules that it currently has, or being fair by letting the disabled play?
If it makes sense that the court can redefine the rules of golf so that a disabled person can use a cart and it still be called "golf", then surely it makes sense to still call it golf after you change the rules so that everybody can use a cart. And if the court has the power to do the former, it has the power to do the latter. And the court clearly chose the virtue of fairness over the "sanctity" of the rule set. And, since letting only one person use a cart would still be unfair, just to different people, the only sensible course of action is let everybody use one.

Obama releases full birth certificate, now STFU idiots. PLZ?

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

That a real American President likes only America, and no other countries?

No – a real American President can like other countries, but has to like America more.

and what about all that fanatical secrecy in hiding his past

All the Bush stuff does nothing but prove my point. There was enough shady stuff in Bush’s past for conspiracy theorists to hang a hat on. Obama is 10X worse. So when conspiracy theorists come along, the average person may not believe the extremes – but there’s more than enough flesh on the skeleton to make them have enough doubts to not dismiss it entirely.

But let's get real. It isn't just the GOP here that is driving this story. The issue here is that Obama's numbers are plummeting across the ENTIRE spectrum. Obama has been hemhorraging Independants, Moderates, and even DEMOCRATS for months. His policies are complete failures. His objectives are counter-intuitive disasters. The people gave him a chance, and he blew it. So they're dumping this epic-fail and in response he's getting desperate.

I'm 100% certain he was sitting on his birth cert and WAITING for just ONE serious GOP contender to start carping about it. None of them ever did. I'm also 100% sure that Trump has no intention of really running. But when he started trending up in the polls, Obama decided to pull the trigger. It wasn't what Obama wanted, but it woudl have to do because clearly all the REAL opponents were not taking the bait.

Then Obama gives a stupid speech about the birth certificate where he is literally WHINING like a moronic jackass about how he's got "important stuff to do". But for two WEEKS he's been doing nothing but going out and FUNDRAISING for his re-election. Total hypocrite. So whatever good will he thought he was going to get just went right out the window. And his poll numbers tanked again. No surprise there.

Tell me what magical wand Obama will wield to bring down gas prices.

The magic wand is a SENSIBLE multi-pronged energy policy. For decades the US policy on domestic energy production has been one of constriction, restriction, and eviction. Permits are denied. Lawsuits are constant. The cost of doing business is so high that companies go overseas, leaving domestic energy production hanging by its fingertips and with very little wiggle room when events start causing uncertainty in the market. A sensible policy would support aggressive domestic production of ALL energy sources – fossil, nuclear, bio, hydro, geo, solar & wind – not just one or two of them. ANY policy would be better than Obama's. His plan is to cram everyone in $50,000 golf carts.

Wood Chopper From Hell

dgandhi says...

Okay, so here is my question.

Why not take the machine at the end of the arm, and have it run up and down the trees in place?

Since this is a tree farm machine, set it up on a golf cart with four of these things, with unactuated folding arms to supply power. have a simple system to attach the things to the trees and let four of them work in parallel from the four corners of the vehicle. Since you are not lifting as much weight you need a smaller machine, and you can get more done in the same amount of time with a less expensive machine.

Also make the whole thing RF controlled so that nobody has to be anywhere near all that falling wood.

That's my initial engineering geek response to this, I wonder if that's patentable? (and does this count as publishing?)

Top Gear Reviews Tesla, Smokes Lotus Elise Off The Line

MaxWilder says...

Bullshit alarm! The 200 mile range estimate is for normal driving, not pushing the car's limit around a track! Same goes for the engine overheating. Also, the charging time is much less for the electrical unit that gets installed in your garage, which can run off the higher voltage electric lines.

This car is not, and was never meant to be, a track racing vehicle. It is for wealthy, progressively minded individuals who would like an electric vehicle to drive to work without sacrificing performance and looking like a fool in a golf cart.

It is also a fantastic proving ground for technologies that will eventually be used in more affordable cars for the rest of us.

Seems to be missing one critical element, which is the controller that is found in many modern golf cart that allows for regenerative braking. Let off the throttle on a down hill or coming to a stop, and it spins up the motor sending energy back to the battery. It's a shame to burn it all of as heat and brake pads. I'd still like a go.
