Ron Paul: Obama Is Not a Socialist

blankfist says...

@NordlichReiter, I love that Carlin clip. Though the term "god" didn't always mean a supernatural or presonal god. God is creation and can also be natural. Richard Dawkins wrote about this in the God Delusion.

That's why saying rights are god given shouldn't be seen as a Judeo-Christian creator gave them to us.

Obama is Selling You Out? (Politics Talk Post)

longde says...

The rich will sit there and take it because doing business in this country is the easiest in the world. Where the fuck are they going to go?

What a naive fool. No regulation? Get fucking real. The reason the economy is in this mess is because of deregulation and lack of oversight of the banking industry, derivatives industry and the mortgage bond raters.

We have witnessed in the last eight years the spigot of free markets and deregulation cracked open a trickle, and these fools have abused every drop of freedom they got. What will happen if there is a full release? Do we really want to be a third world country?

This vlogger doesn't care because he thinks he'll end up in the upper crust if there ever was a libertarian revolution. I call this the "little 'g' god delusion".

It's free speech as all racism and bigotry should be. Burning crosses, flags, swastikas, David's shields, pentagrams, copies of The God Delusion and effigies of presidents, past or present, should all be protected (aside from applicable fire ordinances).

If I were deeply religious I wouldn't pick up a "book on tape" that is called "The God Delusion". I think you can tell by her response that she is not courageous or open minded. It's called an agenda and she obviously has one just like everyone else.

>> ^imstellar28:
If I was deeply religious, I probably would have had the same reaction as she did. I give her credit for having the courage and open-mindedness to listen to it at all.

Browsing Amazon Posts and Amazon Items (Sift Talk Post)

mauz15 says...

Could it be possible to change the 'Amazon items' display a little? Books from popular authors like Richard Dawkins for example, are linked in several videos; so when you go through the list a lot of the items are going to be repeated. I noticed that in this mode: http://amazon.videosift.com/?sel=items&sort= it says '(From post: ________________________)' maybe if instead of having items listed several times, you could have the item and a list of all the posts where it has been linked. So it would look:

My poodle LOVES its little skirt!

I've actually only read excerpts from the God Delusion, but I have it lying around on e-book. The parts I've read have all been excellent. Dawkins is good at keeping his tone pretty calm and scientific even as he eviscerates the different God theories. If you like his writing, I also recommend reading some of Daniel Dennett's books, which are all super. I like Consciousness Explained and the Intentional Stance, but they are more about philosophy and cognitive theory.

Teaching Religion to Children = Child Abuse

yourhydra says...

the god delusion makes a very convincing argument for teaching religion to children to be abusive. In extreme cases children experience intense night horrors and anxiety from the belief of a burning hell and someone watching them constantly. Many children who experience natural thoughts of doubt in God experience severe guilt, and feelings of being unworthy and belive that they are bad people. If you've seen Jesus Camp you know what I mean.

Bill Maher - Be More Cynical on Religion

chilaxe says...

This was 9 years ago. The marketplace of ideas isn't the quite same now, after there have been best-sellers like Dawkins' The God Delusion and Hitchens' God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.

"Non-believers" even got mentioned in the president's inaugural address, and polls show non-believers to be the fastest growing religious group. At this rate, maybe they'll finally just drop the twaddle and start saying "rationalists."

Nightline Face-Off - Does Satan Exist?

It's funny, I've never been a fan of Deepak Chopra but in this debate he was by far the most sane/rational.

In The God Delusion Richard Dawkins questions the credentials of anyone who is called a theologian... what does that say about the credentials of someone who founded "Hookers for Jesus"?

My literary taste brings all the boys to the yard. (Geek Talk Post)

djsunkid says...

OK, so I'll make a list now, and then read everybody elses and see if it reminds me of other books that really stick with me

1 Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid - Douglas Hofstadter
2 1984 - George Orwell
3 A Deepness In The Sky - Vernor Vinge
4 Interview With A Vampire - Ann Rice
5 Cyberpunk: Outlaws and Hackers on the Computer Frontier - Katie Hafner and John Markoff
6 The Tuning of The World - R. Murray Schafer
7 The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
8 National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe - Roy A. Gallant and Margaret Sedeen
9 The Perfectionist: Life and Death in Haute Cuisine - Rudolph Chelminski
10 The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals - Michael Pollan

OK, read others' and realize that I should have put Dune, for sure. I'm glad to see I'm not the only Hofstadter fan, and thrilled to see another Vinge on the list.

I feel kind of weird to have 1984 and Interview with a Vampire on my list. 1984, just because it really did stick and resonate, and well... I've probably read IwaV a few dozen times. Back in junior high I read it almost monthly.

I actually was considering putting The Star Wars Sourcebook by Bill Slavicsek & Curtis Smith on my list. That book blew my mind when I was young, and it definitely will always have a special place in my heart. Now that I look at a picture of the cover on Amazon, I wish that I had. Such an awesome book.

What if atheists are wrong?

Expanding upon that, Dawkins also talked about the nature of belief in The God Delusion.
In that case it would still be pointless to pretend to believe in God, because "He" would still know that you were only pretending.

What if the Christian version of things is correct (for instance). Pascal's wager would say that believing would be the safest course. The problem is, you cannot choose what you believe... you can only pretend. I can pretend to believe in the teapot, but I cannot convince myself it is real without actual evidence.

In that case it would still be pointless to pretend to believe in God, because "He" would still know that you were only pretending.
