Parents charged with sexual abuse for bathing kids

Mashiki says...

>> ^EDD:
The employee developing the photos should have NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to look at the pictures, period, and I trust she breached her contract with Walmart by violating the couple's privacy. This is another case of liberty vs. security and EXACTLY as clear-cut as the Patriot Act.
They should win the case against Walmart on the basis of Constitutional Law, and I sure hope this case sets precedent (although I'm certain there should've been one already).

While this doesn't apply directly to walmart, I'll share an experience I had. I live up in Canada, as some people know. So, back in the late 90's at the time of the PC boom, I was doing a stint working for a company that did PC repair. A high and glamorous job of course. Guy comes in, says "I can't print/see pictures on my PC." PC we sold, figure alright--we'll take a look at what we can do. The guy was using imgview like most people at the time, so fire it up and what the hell do I find but kiddy porn.

Once you've seen stuff like that, it's never unseen. It's been more than 12 years and I can still see those images in my head. I ended up talking to our local detachment, had a cop come by, showed them, they went out got a warrant, and took the machine with them. The guy? Long stretch in federal prison.

Now that my cranky little story is out of the way, let me say this. I'm not a "think of the children" kind of guy. I hate the term, I hate what it's done to society, and I hate that people refuse to think. The real questions in all of this I would be asking are:

What are the state laws of AZ? What are the requirements for reporting kiddie porn/instances of perceived abuse?

What is required of the state? Is it a "you must, you shall, you will" type of scenario laid out in law, which requires the police and CPS/CPA to be direct agents? If so, than the law is flawed, or the interpretation is screwed up. Ontario has something similar to this regarding domestic violence(you must, you shall, you will file charges--and you can, shall, will take a child into custody in various circumstances).

Yeah. Just watch where you place blame, sometimes people enforcing the laws don't have any choice but to enforce the laws because they're required to. However with this person, did they think? Can I hop in their head? Nope. Can you or anyone else in this thread? Nope. Seriously, there's a whole pile of stuff more to this than what most people know, and what actually goes on behind the scenes.

So Here I am again..... What about Love? (Wtf Talk Post)

imstellar28 says...

^Maybe I'm speaking for myself, and my experience is atypical of the median, but the concept of first love, true love, pure love, essence of love, etc. that is presented in hallmark cards, fairytales, and teenage dramas really doesn't have much basis in reality.

Love isn't some starry eyed 16 year old on a first date. The love you are describing is the love that is presented to children as a sort of trick, to keep things moving along. Children need dreams and ambition, and a lot of that is presented to them at a young age.

True love, as I would define it, is taking responsibility for another person's life. There are many reasons one might be inclined to do this - some may be genetically biased, but everything else that is typically associated with love - caring, lust, affection, generosity, passion, adventure - the things that make it into the stories of "pure love" - you can have any of those things with a stranger off the street.

Loving someone is making a choice to share the consequences of their actions - no matter how poor, or unfortunate they may be. Love is enduring the frustrations of a long stint of serious illness, working 50 hours a week to provide for your family, or coping with the hardship of losing everything you own due to poor investments. There's really nothing glamorous or "magical" about it.

Infinite kindness ala Gandhi is not love. It doesn't take much to perform a single act of kindness. You can walk up to any beggar on the street and tuck $1,000 in his pocket; but would you take up begging right next to him, for the next ten years, if that's what it took to get you both safely out of homelessness?

Maybe I'm a sociopath, but it seems easy enough to explain without a divine spirit

As far as humanity goes, humanity is a concept. While it is not impossible to love a concept, why would you spend the single life you have trying to love the concept of humanity, when you could love an actual human?

Or do you mean you wish to love every human alive? If that is the case, what kind of meaning would your love really have?

How does Jimmy Carr feel about Michael Jackson's death?

bleedingsnowman says...

^ I think that's most of the way true. I think he was a pedo bastard and a musical genius, a really strange, messed-up maniac in all, but he could really fucking dance and write a beat.

Also, ponceleon, never spite a rich person for being a philanthropist. It's backwards and makes you sound like a brat. If Diana has the means to jet off to where ever the fuck she's going to talk about landmines, and still look good, then good for her and good for the cause. Sadly her position and glamor could raise awareness more than the combined shouts of every inhabitant of every warzone she visited. Why spite her for attempting to make atrocities known? Or I guess it might suit her better to just lounge in her castle and eat peeled grapes all day. Yeah I'd much rather her do that. They're aren't enough Paris Hilton's in the world.

Rush YYZ - Played by a 13 Year Old Girl Drummer!

Duckman33 says...

Zildjian.com: Who was the first drummer who inspired you to take up the instrument? Who were some of your early drum influences?

Answer: The first time I remember feeling a desire to play the drums was while watching the movie The Gene Krupa Story, at the age of eleven or twelve. The film’s dramatization of his life and Sal Mineo’s portrayal managed to make the idea of being a drummer seem exciting, glamorous, elegant, and dangerous. I started beating on the furniture and my baby sister’s playpen with a pair of chopsticks, and for my thirteenth birthday my parents gave me drum lessons, a practice pad, and a pair of sticks. They said they wouldn’t buy me real drums until I showed that I was going to be serious about it for at least a year, and I used to arrange magazines across my bed to make fantasy arrays of drums and cymbals, then beat the covers off them!

Countdown: Palin's Anti-Science Mindlessness

9364 says...

The base ignorance of this woman is mind boggling. It even manages to surpass the ignorance of her audience at times. Either those at that press conference simply didn't know or they were to afraid to speak up and slap her upside the head.

Notice also that ever since the $150k in clothing and makeup scandal, she wears her hair down and has average jewelry and wears cheaper suits and even is wearing different glasses. I normally wouldn't notice such things but it's just such a striking difference from the glitz and glamor of a week ago.

Gotta love Olbermann, he's often the only guy who puts this stuff on the air. The kind of stuff that SHOULD be on the air. Faux or CNN wouldn't touch this stuff with a 10' poll. Sad really that this is one of the few news guys anymore who actually gives two shits about anything but good ratings and having hot women falling over themselves to tell you 'the news.'

>> ^ponceleon:
Hah, I love it... Keep attacking her and she'll get elected... yeah... great threat. You don't have a good defense so you just threaten that if you keep attacking, you'll look bad.
Seriously, she's a wacko. Not pointing it out is a crime because shes going to be running the country for 6 years after McCain has a heart attack.

I'm not threatening.. it's an observation of what I perceieve as an understanding of the way people react to things. The media needs to be careful in the way they criticize her or it will backlash, thats all I'm saying.

If the media lays off the sexist, hocky mom stabs and grills her nicely about her inexperience and obvious lack of knowledge on foreign policy then she won't be sympathized.

People like her because she comes across as one of the people, unspoiled by Washington blah blah. If the libs and media can craftily wipe away that glamor shots glo she's has going on, and stop bashing her long enough, they'll more effectivly convince the public she can't do the job on charm and spunk alone.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

rougy says...

1. Porn cultivates good relationships. --- Porn has little or nothing to do with relationships. A relationship that is centered around, or influenced by, porn isn't much of a relationship to begin with. I've watched porn with girlfriends, but it was kind of distracting and unfulfilling. I really don't think porn has a lot to do with relationships any more than dreaming does.

2. Porn is for men who sincerely appreciate the beauty of the female body. --- It's less an appreciation for women's bodies than it is a need to see those bodies in order to gratify themselves and release some tension.

3. Porn is harmless and it has no negative effect on the person using it. --- It can be addicting, but certain people seem to need it more than others, kind of like booze.

4. Strippers and porn stars lead glamorous lives, and men respect them. --- As compared to what? A bank teller or a waitress? Some lead glamorous lives, most don't. Respect? That depends, too, on the woman and the man. Just as there are some real creeps in that crowd, there are some real bitches, too.

5. Men like variety in women so porn use helps a man stay faithful to his woman. --- Porn has little or nothing to do with relationships. Porn is a device used by some people to amuse themselves or satisfy themselves or relieve themselves with an orgasm, arguably one of the most pleasant experiences known to humanity. The impact that porn has on a person's fealty to his or her lover is usually nil.

6. Women who get involved in the porn industry choose to do so, and they have valuable careers. --- Most, obviously, choose to do so, as do the men. Rarely does a woman make a porno with someone holding a gun to her head. Some do have successful careers, like Christie Canyon or Nina Hartley. The same is true for the men, like Peter North. It comes with a price, of course, but the stigma of being in a porno has lessened greatly over the years.

7. Porn is an outlet or safety valve for men who would otherwise do Bad Things. --- Probably false on the whole. Again, the relationship between porn and human interactivity is almost nonexistant. Rapists don't need porn, they need rape. Pederasts don't need porn, they need little boys. People who need porn usually have some kind of hightened or unique sexual urge that is not being satisfied and porn is the only course to achieving that satisfaction.

8. Women who work in porn are empowered and sexually liberated. --- As opposed to women who don't work in porn who are empowered and sexually liberated? Porn is a job. Few jobs are empowering or sexually liberating.

9. Porn is just a fantasy and people do not apply it to real life. --- Overall, that's true. People who like and use porn are usually more imaginative than those who don't. The kind of people who have to apply things to "real life" are usually not users of porn. I would say that most people who use porn get to a point where they have to fetishize some aspect of it to keep from being bored. It's an outlet, a distraction, and ultimately very private in nature.

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

davidraine says...

Boy, am I late to the punch here. Still, I think I might be able to add something deconstructive here (uh, sure) so batter up...

1. Porn cultivates good relationships.

As was mentioned somewhere above in this giant mass of thread, it can be a nice addition to an existing relationship, to get the old mind-juices flowing and liven up the old sex life. Sort of like eating vanilla cake, but then eating the same vanilla cake for years, and then realizing you can put strawberries on it, and all of a sudden vanilla cake with strawberries is the best thing you've ever eaten.

2. Porn is for men who sincerely appreciate the beauty of the female body.

I'd agree that this is a myth, except that I don't know anyone who thinks this, and it misses the point. Porn is for getting yourself excited in that special way that makes you feel all warm inside when you don't have a person to get you all warm on the outside too. Among other things. Of course, sex is mainly mental to begin with, so appreciation of beautiful bodies helps.

3. Porn is harmless and it has no negative effect on the person using it.

I also drink alcohol and curse.

4. Strippers and porn stars lead glamorous lives, and men respect them.

Glamorous? Maybe on screen, but there's effort involved -- Porn is hard work, you know. I don't know any strippers or porn stars personally, so I can't say I respect or disrespect any of them. I'm trying to be funny here, but this "myth" is so far off base I'm having trouble linking it back to reality. Come on, throw me a bone here!

5. Men like variety in women so porn use helps a man stay faithful to his woman.

You know, I think you're getting your information from a questionable source. This list isn't "Common myths about porn," it's "lame excuses men tell their wives to justify watching porn in a sitcom." Though as a man, I do like variety, so I recommend roleplay. You know what I'm talking about; I've already explained that strawberry thing.

6. Women who get involved in the porn industry choose to do so, and they have valuable careers.

"Everybody needs money! That's why they call it money!"
Too bad I've only seen the first hour of The Heist. This one I can't really argue with, but only because it's true about every career. This has been pointed out above, but just like anything else, there's people who have a career and there's people who just have a job. Then there's people without a job, and without a career, and there's people who have tons of money and just drive around all day looking for things to throw money at, and now I'm completely off track.

7. Porn is an outlet or safety valve for men who would otherwise do Bad Things.

This is patently false. Everyone knows the safety valve for men who would otherwise do Bad Things is video games. Except it always goes HORRIBLY WRONG. And then students end up getting hurt because other students were playing those MURDER SIMULATORS all day. Won't anyone think of the children? Why does no-one listen to Jack Thompson!? Oh wait I'm off topic again.

8. Women who work in porn are empowered and sexually liberated.

Damn I'm having trouble making this stuff funny. You know what, I'm going to pass on this one.

9. Porn is just a fantasy and people do not apply it to real life.

Completely false. I watched a porn once where a guy has sex with three women in the span of fifteen minutes, but then the guy turns into a girl and the three women turn into a tiger, a monsterous tentacle beast, and a plant. Then the girl has to run away from the tiger, but she's trying to make out with the plant, and the tentacle beast is just busy eating popcorn. I know this is not fantasy because it happened to me when I was 19.

-----

So there you have it. As a bonus, since this thread is about porn myths, I feel it only appropriate to add a few of my own myths about porn that are harmful to people.

10. Sexual partners always climax at the same time, even if they've just met.

11. Sex is always satisfying, and everyone feels loads of sexual pleasure effortlessly.

12. Sex is always accompanied by an appropriate soundtrack.

13. The quality of any sexual act is directly proportional to the amount of noise both sexual partners make.

14. The only appropriate things to say during sex are "Give it to me," "Oh yeah baby," and "Yes, yes, yes." Moaning is also appropriate.

15. The best way to get a woman to sleep with you is to be a domineering asshole. Wait a minute...

So despite the fact that nobody will mistake me for a professional comedian, I've hopefully made you laugh just a bit. Because one of the best things to do when confronted with an emotionally charged topic (oh crap he's getting serious, why don't I have a dental appointment lined up) is to laugh at it a bit and take the edge off. Judging from previous replies to this thread, I think a bunch of Sifters already get it.
