Graphics card woes

00Scud00 says...

I have no particular allegiance to either brand and have bounced back and forth between the two for years. This is my first Nvidia card in a while, the main reason for buying ATI cards came down to price for me, why spend hundreds more when I could get a comparable ATI card with more VRAM to boot? That changed with the 970, I could get a better GPU with another gig of VRAM over my Radeon 7970, or is this only a half a gig now?

Ralgha said:

3.5 gb ! LOL. This is so good. And no, I don't own a 970. But I'd take one over an AMD GPU any day.

A New Level Of Archery Skills

NaMeCaF says...

LOL I was thinking the exact same thing.

This is almost too unbelievable. But if it somehow is legit, then this dude has seriously gotta don a Hawkeye or Green Arrow costume and take up the vigilante gig.

This is awesome!
But, somehow the way it has been shot or how moves or the voice over or something, it feels like a parody (I know it's not, but the whole time I could not suprress the feeling that I was watching a parody).

Gigapixels of Andromeda [4K]

FAKE!!!
The Hubble is in space, so why are there mountains in the foreground at the end?!? ;-)

Now I want a 50" 4k touchscreen picture frame with 4.5 gigs of ram to properly display this at home.

Grandmas Smoking Weed for the First Time

Chairman_woo says...

I actually had to google that. Presumably it's due to poor farming and curing? Either way I can only blame alcohol and low tolerance for my first trip to whitey hell I fear.

Certainly beats the one and only bad trip I had on mushrooms though. Good God! The floor opened up and swallowed me and I spent what seemed like eternity (actually about a hour I'm told) in purgatory coming to terms with the fact I had just died (which I'm told resembled me just staring into a bathroom mirror chanting gibberish).

My own fault, I was at a metal gig (Chimera) and decided that the moshpit was the ideal place to come up. Though I did have a great time after that (everything is going to seem great after you just died and came back to life), and every other of the 20 or so trips I had were wonderful and enlightening and even this incident probably did me a lot of favours in hindsight...

So you know..don't be put off kids! Drugs can be great.

Was it possibly weed with paraquat on it? That will make you hurl every time....or worse.

2nd Grade Homework Teaches Indoctrination

enoch says...

@newtboy
now we are getting somewhere.

let us look at your first paragraph.notice anything?
ideology vs reality.
what you are proposing is the initial intent and ideologically i totally agree but even in your paragraph you concede to the truth, albeit a cynical truth.
(the referencing of the necessity if an informed public).which is only one aspect of a much greater whole which should be criticized and addressed.

understand i am not disagreeing with your assessments of the original intent.what i am pointing out is that what we have now is no where near a reflection of that intent,to which i have added that each right, privilege and dignity has had to be fought for and extracted FROM the government.

the government is "supposed" to represent the people.
it is "supposed" to protect and secure our rights.
but is that what we see play out?
i certainly dont think so.

the case is not exactly hard to make that the federal government no longer serves nor represents the will of the people but rather large corporate and monied interests.

though i will concede that revisionist text books can fascilitate indoctrination.

i am also not trying to make the argument this video is some political masterpiece of criticism.
it is a pandering,condescending,simple-minded piece of work BUT it is the criticism i admire.

i could go on for days on the failures of the public education system and it has very little to do with the teachers but rather the delivery system itself, which has become a machine which comodifies people into class categories.

henry giroux called it punishment creep.

school is not longer about education but rather about learning to obey.

quick story before i totally go off the rails and write you all a book:
i was subbing a history class for a friend and decided to teach shay's rebellion, since he was just completing america's war for independence and the rebellion is vital to understand the debate over federal powers.my friend was delighted with the idea but the administration was, less than enthusiastic.

the next day i was handed my third disciplinary notice and reprimanded for not following curriculum.which was bullshit because i was never given specific curriculum.

they wanted a babysitter...not a teacher.

i have not had a teaching gig since, because i didnt learn the lesson they are drilling into those kids brains.....obey.

sit down.
shut up.
and do what you are told.

do you truly think obedience should be the primary lesson learned at school?

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

ChaosEngine says...

Just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean the target of whatever unpleasant activity isn't a "victim". You can be the "victim" of a prank.

And this is more than an inconvenience. Did you actually watch the video? While you could make an argument that some of the comments are relatively innocuous, there are plenty that are downright creepy, and a few even vaguely threatening.

And drop the "poor people" schtick. Being poor is not an excuse to be an asshole. Neither is being rich.

Again, it's about context. I say crass things to my female friends all the time, because I know them. That's fine. Hell, I don't even have a problem with someone getting abused (verbally) at a comedy gig. It's appropriate.

bmacs27 said:

Okay, so a suitable answer to your question, "why should she have to?" Is "because assholes exist, and she'd rather not listen to them."

Victim blaming? Really? No crime was committed. These men are well within their rights. You aren't a victim whenever someone does something you'd rather they didn't do. Laws exist to delineate when you are being victimized, and when you are being inconvenienced. Everything in this video falls decidedly into the latter category. Assholes inconvenience me all the time. I don't make a video imploring that we stop assholery. That would be dumb. Assholes won't listen. If they listened, they wouldn't be assholes. I just take reasonable measures to avoid dealing with it. In this case, if she really hates talking to poor people, she could just wear earbuds.

Personally I'd prefer a society without fences or earbuds. The fact is, most of those guys could be pretty cool, if crass as all get out. Personally I don't have a problem with crass. Crass can be funny. It might be offensive, but being offended is merely an inconvenience. Crassness by itself isn't dangerous.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

chasoclass says...

I like John Oliver's program, but let me see here: the white male headlining the show, who probably got this gig on HBO when he substituted for another white male on the Daily Show, is telling us about how unfair corporate America is when it comes to gender? Every Late Night talk show host is a male. So it irks me when a male-dominated business preaches to me about unfairness towards women. Classic pot calling the kettle black.

50 Cent Not Worth a NICKLE [when it comes to a first pitch]

Vi Hart, Mathemusician - XOXO Festival

doogle says...

I agree- the organisers likely didn't brief her enough of the scope. The conference is a willy-nilly kumbaya for artists doing their own thing. Or agriculture.

But I dispute your points. Because I know about her and been following her for a while;
* no she doesn't get chances because she's a young lady. She's not that young and is actually very used to giving presentations;
* she's totally a public personality (yo, she presents how you should monetize on being your own brand!).

She did put in a good effort, I'll give her that. Good sport despite the slide fail. Which is still better than I can say for Michael Bay who probably had way better direction, support, and speech writers.

You don't have to be a stand-up comic. Drive one point. Be honest, genuine, and personable. And if you can't - you're not worth other people's time - politely decline the gig.

Yogi said:

I don't think that's necessarily fair. I mean look at the presenter, she's a young lady who is used to editing and producing videos on YouTube. She can record the voice over several times. Make cuts and rewrites and basically hone stuff. She's not a public personality, maybe her only experience performing in front of people is making a prewritten talk about Mathematics, or playing music at a fair with bunches of other people. She needs training sure, but what kind of booking is this? I blame the people who put her on, you don't just say "Go up and do your thing!" to someone who makes YouTube videos, she's not a stand up comic.

Superman with a GoPro

chingalera says...

Like the comic books of old leaving-out the subtle nuances of physics like whiplash, shock, or the smartest guy on the planet taking the word of a traumatized (or in this case, apparently love-struck-and-with-full-faculties building superintendent) hottie over a quick-fly-back and a glance through with x-ray eyeballs to maybe, make sure the gal was correct?!

Never could stand the inconsistencies of DC's bread-and-butter character, who seems to like his flesh-and-blood human male counterparts, becomes more dim-witted and effeminate with each passing year. Still at the Daily Planet for the day job? C'mon Superman, really?! You should at the very least have a gig with naval intelligence, I hear-tell they still issue the birth-control glasses you so effectively use for that awe-inspiring disguise.

"Oh, you mean that burning, exploding building I just fell out of? No, Superman, there's no one else in there. Yes, I'm absolutely sure of that. No need to think anything more of it. And yes, I'm normally this calm when I'm blown out of skyrises."

2CELLOS - Thunderstruck

kulpims says...

I booked young Luka a few years back for a classical gig with a pianist ... a tall but shy, young man with a very boyish look came accompanied with both his parents, who also attended his concert. he was 22 at the time and after the first score I could clearly see he's a bloody genius on cello. *quality

my general rule of thumb for an electric is heavy and solid is better. ever played an Anderson??
http://www.andersonguitars.com/

Guy used to luthier at both Fender and Gibson, has his own gig now-Very limited output, special order, that kinnna thing.

Dude....You'll never wanna pick up another electric again. Feels like a hot chick on yer crotch, sexy as FUCK! Worth the investment if yer serious.

Again though, you do pay for the extra attention to materials and detail in craftmanship-They start at around 2K now.

Gibson guitars now tune themselves robotically

CreamK says...

I can say, it's excellent for getting different tunings from one guitar. Wouldn't trust a gig on it thou, still need multiple guitars but for home and rehearsals, excellent. If you own a studio, you'd like one these for sure. Maybe if the person is really heavy but i haven't got that problem, learned to play with old school Fender vibra, my guitar rarely goes out of tune in the middle of a session.. But now that i'm completely gone to drop and open tunings, it would be easier to just carry one guitar.
