To Catch a Predator - "Have a seat" Compilation

00Scud00 says...

While the video itself is interesting and I am all for busting sexual predators, there is something ghoulish about turning it into entertainment. Kinda like the "fair like" atmosphere described at some public executions back in the days when we had public executions.

Connie Britton's Hair Secret. It's not just for Women!

@newtboy

I don't think I'm much in danger of contradiction in suggesting that you yourself have yet to crack a book of feminist theory or engage with a feminist activist making no more extravagant sex/gender claims that the one you quote from that unimpeachable source, dictionary.com (and when did dictionaries move from being an aid to understanding obscure words to the ultimate arbiters of political thought?).

There is no separating the movement from the ideology; this is an ancient truism. Without the movement, the idea dies. Without the idea, the movement doesn't exist. My unfollowable second paragraph comprises only examples of actual, nasty feminist doctrine which I have encountered in the real world, and could probably even document with a few google searches. I can hardly be blamed that this group is so dissolute, so indiscriminately inclusive of maniacs and criminal fanatics that no single representative feminist can be found, no central text can answer for the whole.

But for the sake of increasingly and inexplicably divisive argument, let's attempt to isolate just that 'small-f' feminism in the definition you give: "feminism: noun: the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men", which I will unconditionally repudiate and abjure, for the following reasons.

i) Let's be boring and start with the name. A name that has rightly attracted much criticism, and which Virginia Woolf - not a feminist, merely a devastatingly intelligent and talented woman - called "a vicious and corrupt word that has done much harm in its day and is now obsolete".* Anyone can see the defect here, an implicitly sexist term that apparently calls for the advancement of one sex at the expense of - whom? Well, whom do you think? A special politics for women only and exclusionary of those other incidental members of the human species, once allies and comrades and now relegated to the other side of what has become a literally unending antagonism.

You may say, "it's only a name", but how little else your dictionary leaves me to examine. No, were there no other social or intellectual harm in feminism, I would reject it on the ground of its name alone.

ii, sailor) Would that there were a known equivalent for the term 'racialism' that could relate to the cultural fiction of gender. The demand for women's rights necessarily requires that such a category 'women' exists, and is in need of special protection. Well what virtue is there in any woman that exists in no man? What mannish fault that finds no womanly echo? Then how is this distinction maintained except through supernatural thinking?

There are no women; and if there are no women, then there is nothing for feminism to accomplish. You may sign me up at any time for the doctrine of 'anti-sexism' or of 'individualism', but I will spit on anyone who advocates for 'women's rights'.

iii) This has been touched on before, and praise satan for that time saving mercy, but I reject the implicit assumption that there is a natural societal opposition to the principle of sex equality and that those who fail to declare for this, again, historically very recent dogma fall by default into that opposing force.

*The quote is worth taking in its fuller context, written in a time when the word 'feminist' was a slur on those heroes whose suffering and idealism has been so ghoulishly plundered for the tawdry use of @bareboards2 and her cohort:

"What more fitting than to destroy an old word, a vicious and corrupt word that has done much harm in its day and is now obsolete? The word ‘feminist’ is the word indicated. That word, according to the dictionary, means ‘one who champions the rights of women’. Since the only right, the right to earn a living, has been won, the word no longer has a meaning. And a word without a meaning is a dead word, a corrupt word. Let us therefore celebrate this occasion by cremating the corpse. Let us write that word in large black letters on a sheet of foolscap; then solemnly apply a match to the paper. Look, how it burns! What a light dances over the world! Now let us bray the ashes in a mortar with a goose-feather pen, and declare in unison singing together that anyone who uses that word in future is a ring-the-bell-and-run-away-man, a mischief maker, a groper among old bones, the proof of whose defilement is written in a smudge of dirty water upon his face. The smoke has died down; the word is destroyed. Observe, Sir, what has happened as the result of our celebration. The word ‘feminist’ is destroyed; the air is cleared; and in that clearer air what do we see? Men and women working together for the same cause. The cloud has lifted from the past too. What were they working for in the nineteenth century — those queer dead women in their poke bonnets and shawls? The very same cause for which we are working now. ‘Our claim was no claim of women’s rights only;’— it is Josephine Butler who speaks —‘it was larger and deeper; it was a claim for the rights of all — all men and women — to the respect in their persons of the great principles of Justice and Equality and Liberty.’"

David Blaine: Real or Magic with Harrison Ford

chingalera says...

You keep thinking that then if you'd like. As I watched this, when he asked what card he was thinking of I thought to myself 'nine of hearts'- NO SHIT

Somewhere embedded in his technique is the answer to the suggestion
Metaprogrammings' a motherfucker.

Anyone else??

Or wait....Maybe it's simply having seen this before and the 9 of hearts was already there, locked into the folds of the hippo-campus/cerebral cortex highway? Don't recall ever having seen this before...

Either ways...If David Blaine came over, I'd prolly tell him what Han Solo here told him BEFORE he had a chance to mind-fuck me..The difference? It wouldn't be......"ACTING!!!"

Seriously though, y'all really thought that Blaine was being rudely and cruelly ejected from his home?? C'mon people...suspend your disbelief for the sake of your hearts and get over yourselves....all he said was the 'eff' word.

"Next up: Blaine will bury himself in the permafrost of Antarctica in a steaming-hot bubble-bath of human blood and for forty days and forty nights with but a single meal-worm to snack on for the duration. When he rises from his ghoulish and self-imposed sarcophagus he will have drunk all the contents of the bathtub...But first, this commercial interruption to your body's natural vibrations."

Eukelek said:

... obviously a suggestion technique... quite cunning though... He suggests the 9 of hearts constantly somehow and make him only come up with that through suggestion. The rest is simple. I concur, terrible reaction... almost to much, kinda forced...

The World of Warcraft Restaurant Opened in Beijing

TheDreamingDragon says...

I wonder if Blizzard is seeing a dime from these Homages, using their market force to promote this restaurant. Considering how well China respects the Creators of copyrighted material,I doubt it highly. And such a lame attempt at cashing in on World of Warcraft too. Murals,Big TVs. Unworthy.

Now if I were Blizzard,I'd outshine this huckster's game of an eatery in China and make their own Themed Restaurant chain. I've taken people with kids to places in New York City that are special effects extravaganzas with something "interesting" going on at about every 15 minutes. One consisted of a spaceship ride to an alien world,al la 1950's sci fi flicks.and another was called Jeckle and Hyde's
Adventurer's Club where you eat in a supposed Gothic mansion devoted to hunters of the macabre run by the esteemed Dr. Jeckle, who has a cute animatronic transformation into Mister Hyde I'd imagine several times a night. That's the idea of it: having a crew of actors interact with the customers as Magic Mirrors,or a diver speaking from a shark head mounted on the wall.3 tiers overlooking a wall of animatronic Ghoulish delight, little shows, interesting things going on all the time, here and there.

Now try that with the Lore of World of Warcraft as the theme. Maybe a several vinette plot acted out with stage swordfighting and spells special effected to life. There is also a franchise called Medival Times that has horses jousting and the knightly ambiance to boot. You sit as spectators to a 6 course dinner while a show of several acts is going on in the middle. Warcraft Dinner theatre. Both types of show have their advantages. The "stuff going on all the time" thing allows for walk in traffic,so a constant flow of money,or the Super Spectacular you sell like a Play, for a one performance ticket maybe 60 bucks a pop. With Official Blizzard merchendise at the Souvenier stand!

It could work well.It would work well. Will somebody tell somebody about this so something can be done?
KKTHXBYE! LOL

My that is the most shocking thing I've seen in a while. I believe beyond the shock value it informs and warns. I've never really understood the snuff rule but I don't see why this shouldn't be on here. What would be ghoulish is if people enjoyed watching this or if it was posted for that intention. But that's not something that is easy to judge.

The value of the submission probably has to be judged on its own merits. One video at a time.

President Obama's Statement on Osama bin Laden's Death

NetRunner says...

@dystopianfuturetoday ghoulish is how I felt, ghoulish is still how I feel. Remember back in 2003, when we killed Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday and Qusay? The pictures of their dead bodies' faces were everywhere you looked for almost an entire week. I was steeling myself in preparation of having to go through that again with Osama bin Laden.

Fortunately it looks like we're mildly less barbaric under Obama. Apparently the body was treated according to Muslim custom. He was buried at sea, to deprive Al Qaeda a focal point for reverence and/or attacks. And so far at least, we seem to have refrained from releasing photos of his corpse.

I doubt that'll last though. People are gonna want more proof sooner rather than later.

@blankfist, can't you give the petty, self-serving, self-aggrandizing ideological conceit a rest, just for a day or two?

I don't want to have to surrender my superlib card, but I'm OK with bin Laden dead, sans trial. I'd be OK with a trial too, but that's not how it played out. Either way is fine, just so long as it's over. I won't be celebrating bin Laden's death, or making ghoulish comments about pictures of his bullet ridden corpse, but generally, I'm glad to have finished the final chapter in the decade long story of 9/11.

I celebrate the death of the 9/11 era. Good riddance to all of it.

Liberty Vox Pop Death

JiggaJonson says...

"A Statue of Liberty replica stolen from outside a coffee shop has resurfaced in chilling video that echoes the horrifying beheadings of journalist Daniel Pearl and others.

The fiberglass statue disappeared last month from in front of the Vox Pop coffee shop in Brooklyn and reappeared on the Fourth of July in a video posted to YouTube showing its horrible fate."

I really dont know what to make of all this. Some sick minds at work here and not just because of the message. It's a philosophical problem many people are up against and to quote Sam Harris, 'the problem here is not the abundance of rational thought.'

People who do things like this make me sad more than anything.

How does Jimmy Carr feel about Michael Jackson's death?

NetRunner says...

In case anyone is confused about Jimmy Carr's commentary, please watch this instructional video of his that explains exactly what he's doing here.

To go a bit further, I would say that he's also keying off another aspect common to comedy: the impertinent truth. Sure, it's ghastly to say you didn't care about Diana dying, and don't care that Michael Jackson has just died. But the truth is, anyone with even a moderate grip on sanity thinks that the attention paid to both deaths was and is ghoulishly offensive in more ways than not.

Yes, it's big news that he died. Yes, the tabloids will be going nuts as the legal questions are settled about his estate, custody of his children, ownership of his music rights, and even the "true" circumstances of his death.

But why has this been the top story on the nightly national news every night since?

His death even gets a full segment of the ostensibly politics-oriented programs on MSNBC (Hardball, Ed Show, Countdown, and Maddow, often as the top story there as well) every night, even when we've got a lot of the usual political news going on, not to mention global news like the protests in Iran, the protests in China, the coup in Honduras, and nuclear weapons talks in Russia...

So yeah, I'm sad that Michael Jackson died. I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm sorry he's gone.

But for God's sake, it's not that big of a fucking deal.

Sam Harris - Why I Criticize Religion. Video Interview

And yet, you provide a bunch of hot air with little to none sound argumentation. Only numerous 'premises' elongated by the implementation of jargon-filled sentences. (I love the tone of your entire post with the fact you dare to use the word 'objectively' )

The real question here is, do YOU listen to yourself talk?
