Senate "Libertarian" Schooled on Gov't Spending/Saving

xxovercastxx says...

I think Rand Paul's problem, and many other peoples' problem, is that they pick a political philosophy and either take it to extremes or refuse to consider anything else.

I'm a moderate who leans a little toward libertarianism. I think it's important to constantly ask, "Is this something that the government should do?" or "Is this something that is best done by the government?" This is probably seen as "typical behavior" for a libertarian or conservative. The difference is sometimes I think the answer is yes.

Spending 2 billion up front may keep us from having to spend 5 billion on the back end. I don't think Paul is out of line for questioning that statement. I'd want to see the numbers that prove this out if I were on this committee. Where I think he gets ridiculous (as Franken correctly calls him on) is in suggesting that anyone has claimed this will scale perfectly to unlimited heights. He's constructed a strawman claim that spending more money always leads to more savings.

Let's say you have an office and you need to buy pens. You can buy pens for $0.50 a piece or $0.60 a piece, but the 60-cent pens last twice as long. Let's say 5 cases of 50-cent pens will last a year, so 5 cases of 60-cent pens lasts 2 years. You'll obviously see savings in year 2 because you won't have to buy pens at all that year. I don't think I'm saying anything that's not obvious.

But what Paul says essentially is, "Then why not buy 5000 cases of pens?"

If he was asking honestly and out of ignorance, well that would still be somewhat concerning, but it's more irritating to me that he's being snarky about it. There are lots of reasons not to buy 5000 cases of pens. Who knows if the office will even exist in 200 years, let alone still need pens?

So yes, I feel it was entirely appropriate for Franken to call his question absurd. But at the same time, I don't see it as bad that someone (Paul in this case) is getting in there and asking "are we sure this is a good idea?" I just wish he was more rational about it.

The other aggravation this video, and others like it, cause for me is the reaction they get which I might categorize as, "LOL! Libertarians/Conservatives are stupid! Vote Democrat!"

If this is the point you want to make, tell me why I should vote Democrat rather than why I shouldn't vote Republican. Voting for the idiots who will do the least damage is not all that appealing, no matter which party it is.

"Most Racist Field Trip I've Ever Been On In My Life"

kymbos says...

This is getting ridiculous. This has already been sifted, then I put up a dupe with tags that had 'field trip' and 'racist' and the original did not show up in the check, so I promoted it only to find it was a dupe. Now it's happened again. Do tags do absolutely nothing?

This shit is getting to me. The same thing happened with a doco about the financial collapse the other week. This is an outrage!

Chris Rock - "White People Got Less Crazy"

(Our quotewall is getting ridiculous)

I do think that is his point, though. He's using the word "progress" because that's the word that's commonly used. People say blacks have made great progress in equality and civil rights. He says no, white people have.

He's not saying there's been no progress.

Local Police Enforcing BP Rules and not Law

Yogi says...

Seriously this is just getting ridiculous...we have a constant stream of these videos proving the trampling of rights. Nothing has changed though, there's been no stopping of this, it just keeps going on. Even if someone possibly sues someone over this it'll be months before we get a ruling on it and it won't matter then. Also it'll just be ignored the next time around.

Democracy means we the people are in charge, make our voices heard on this issue and stop this stupidity.

EDIT: Also you have to blame this journalist guy for cooperating with this interrogation that happened afterwords by the BP Security dude. Simply refuse to answer the questions and ask if you're under arrest, if you're not than you can drive away. It's getting really stupid here folks...I'm sick of it.

Fall of the Republic - The Presidency of Barack Obama

^Profit from it? I think what this video is trying to do is be what the media should be, a watch dog. Granted, this is chop full of sensationalism and glances over things that are important, but it is at least making an effort to look out for "the man" and serve the interests of "the little guy". It seems like people who call shenanigans now are attacked with "loon" or "conspiracy nut" kind of ad hominem attacks.

While it isn't formal education, it is at least something to break the cycle of thought one normally is exposed to. A break from status que thinking that you would get at...say your local library. Established educational academia has a vested interests to not look "cooky" as it could detract from their attendance pool. They have a vested interest in not deviating from what you would expect. Being edgy or insightful goes against established academia and it is why a lot of real revolutionary thought comes from outside the university system.

Even well educated people on economics don't have any transparency into the fed. It is only partly a government organization, the business conducted in them is not a matter of public record. Recent attempts to make it so have been blocked and that is what the video is pointing out in the first 50mins or so. That massive cronyism and misconduct was and still is being conducted to rob the people of their savings to benefit a very small number of firms that generate no wealth.

I don't see why you would find it odd that the rich would conspire with other rich to protect their wealth and power. The history on this; mercantilism, cartels, feudalism, oligopolies, is just to clear to ignore. I think this video did a good job in capturing where these potential men in black coats could be, and if they are, offer a very interesting perspective into possible goals and means to archive those goals. I love war gaming. What I mean is to take a situation and map it out to its ends. Most people get ridiculed when they do this out in open air, which is a shame.

Joke for a promote (Comedy Talk Post)

lovelynotes says...

Two blonde roomates go to the petshop and come home with pet mice. Upon debating how to tell them appart one blonde suggests they cut off the tail of one of the mice. It seems like a great idea so they go ahead.

That night the mice are talking and one says to the other "wow, thats cool you don't have a tail." "I know!" "I wish I didnt have a tail." "Well you can, just chew yours off." So the mouse does.

The next day the blondes check on the mice and find neither of them have tails. So they decide to cut off the left front paw of one of the mice.

That night a similar conversation takes place between the mice adn in the morning the blondes find both of their mice three-legged with no tails.

This continues until one morning neither of the mice have any legs or tails. "This is getting ridiculous!" one of the blondes finially exclaims,

"I'll tell you what, you take the black one and I'll take the white one."

I'd invest in at least one new hard drive. You can get ridiculously large SATA drives for less than $100.

I'd also repeat the recommendation I've seen from the hardware sites recently, and go for an ATI Radeon 4770HD graphics card. It should be ~$100, and can match or exceed most other cards up to the $200 range.

Downvote Bias? (Sift Talk Post)

Fletch says...

"I hate to be a stool pigeon, but..."

...you're going to do it anyway?

I'm new here, but maybe we should get approval from a committee of self-appointed VS SS. You submit your request for a downvote to the committee, and committee members can then approve your request by voting with their power points. Say... 5 points required for approval? Then the request could be forwarded to a "Downers Canyon" of sorts, where the junior sifters could hash out the request's merit. Of course, simply languishing within Downers Canyon indefinitely without resolution isn't really fair, so I think a time limit should be imposed, after which time Sifty sends all unresolved downvote requests to the "Downy DeadPool", where ambitious Sifters can earn power points for successfully taking up the argument for or against the request. Of course, only one Power Point awarded per day. We wouldn't want it to get ridiculous.
