Well, well, well. Here we are. I'm not around much any more - but I couldn't let this event pass without celebrating an amazing achievement of Newtboy reaching Galaxy.

Even though I'm not around much - going through some life changes (time makes you bolder, even children get older) VideoSift is still my high water mark for making a dent in the world - and I'm very proud that great people like Newtboy still choose to make a home here on the Sift. VideoSift forever!

My song is short and sweet this time. I'm mainly a cappella these days ... with a large helping of apologies to The Eagles. @lucky760, flip the switch on the new badge! Congrats @newtboy.

The wheels of the VideoSift machinery turn slowly these days, but they do still turn! Congratulations Newtboy on Galaxy. Badge and song incoming!

OK; I had funny flashback to the scene in Galaxy Quest where they run through the gigantic "mashers" that have no point at all when the metal press scene came up lol

I like how they're careful to show that the Orville is just one of thousands of identical ships. Not the flagship or the singular most important crew in the galaxy, just some people with a job to do.

What YOU Can SEE Through a $1 Billion, $32,000 and an $800 T

StukaFox says...

I remember the first time I saw the Ring Nebula through my Dobsonian and thought "man, that thing is really far away". Then I swung my scope to Cassiopeia's "W" and looked at the ghostly smudge of the Andromeda Galaxy. I tried to fathom the distance and came up lacking. My eyes were better then and I could see things in the mid-6s, but even with full night vision and using averted vision, I couldn't make out any detail; it was just a little wisp of light where the middle was a touch brighter than the edges.
That was the day I fully became an atheist. It made no sense that God would put a smudge of light 2.5 million light years away that was actually a trillion purposeless stars. I had no answer for that. Standing on that runway in the Sierra mountains, enveloped in blackness and looking at Andromeda, I felt a direct link between myself, time and the universe. I didn't need heaven anymore and I never felt the existential dread of death ever again. I understood that I was part of infinity and that was enough.

Is Success Luck or Hard Work? | Veritasium

Well, it's sort of what the whole movie is about... guy goes to the center of the galaxy looking for God but learns he was really looking for himself... and then dies fighting himself as it also happens to be an alien in galaxy-jail. That old yarn.

Self-actualization is great but it's really just the mid-point of the journey (unless you die fighting an alien).

Neighbors exist as a fuck you to neighbors.

I deeply enjoy butchering German.

Many Germans believe Czech was created to mock them.

My son has a theory that Polish is a made-up language that they only pretend to use when we can hear them. At home they speak like normal people (us).

Austrian is like Canadian, virtually non-existent, but you know it when they speak it.

Slovakian was basically made up by czech schoolteachers in early 20th century. Joke.

Hungarian, like Finnish, is from another galaxy altogether. Also we last had a border with Hungary 27 years ago, I should get used to that.
