What are you Watching? (1sttube Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

I just finished The Pacific. I really liked Band of Brothers, so I had high hopes, but in the end I felt it was not completely up to par with its predecessor. Nice to learn a little bit of WW2 history from the other side of the globe, though.

Right now I'm at a loss as to what I should watch next. I watched the first two episodes of Mad Men, and while I enjoyed the retro scenery, the storyline didn't really drag me in. I'm thinking of continuing on with season 3 of Dexter, and watch Arrested Development for comedy, since everyone speaks so highly of it. When Game of Thrones comes out, I will watch that. I would love suggestions, though. Things I've seen and enjoyed in the past:

-Deadwood
-The Wire
-Battlestar Galactica
-Firefly
-Doctor Who
-Rome

Battlestar Galactica Trailer Final (web browser game)

5 quid says the game will be full of the same lame religious crap that ruined the last two seasons of the show. Spoiler alert: God did it.

Ya, that wouldn't of even been bad if they did it cleverly. I don't know how they were able to take killer robots that wipe out humanity, and turn them into such pussies. The first 2 seasons are legendary television, the third season starts out strong, but, to me, is the end of what made BSG great. From there, you go to episodic non-sense with no real since of overall story telling. I mean, the first 2 seasons had all sorts of neat religious interplay; was the 9 in his head an angel, what's the deal with the cylon faith, what's the deal with cobal and earth? They manage to drop the ball on nearly every question, and by drop the ball, I mean answer the question in such a trite way as to ruin all the tension built up over the course of years.

Ahhh rant over...I try and pretend that seasons 1-2 are the only ones that happened then the show got canceled. I am conformable with this state of denial.

Every episode of Star Trek: Voyager

kceaton1 says...

So about the lizard episode... From my understanding they hit warp 10, so... Why don't electrons turn into lizards?

Ahhhah!!! Maybe, when electrons are measured a sock disappears! That's it!

/If Voyager had writers that new what "strongly-episodic" meant, that may have been the best trek made. Like, the Battlestar Galactica writers or the writers leftover from Deep Space Nine; especially, during it's last four seasons or so.

disposable razors (Blog Entry by jwray)

jwray says...

Electric shavers don't work. I've tried 4 of them.

I've got one electric shaver right now that works great assuming you've got less than 5 o'clock shadow, but can't shave anything longer than that.

I got the idea of using old fashioned razors from Battlestar Galactica, honestly. They have a bit of a fetish for scenes involving old-fashioned razors.

It doesn't help that my beard is to a regular beard as rigatoni is capellini.

I expected Vipers and Cylon Raiders flew out of the machine after opening it. Great Battlestar Galactica soundtrack

Yeah Im definitely hearing the battlestar galactica beat in this, now we just need the shaky camera action and bad tracking.

Video Games Live - Civilization IV theme

GeeSussFreeK says...

The Civ 4 theme keeps me at the selection screen far longer than any other game ever, it is truly an epic score. Battlestar Galactica had this type of fusion music as well, and I loved it. It is funny how much of the message of music is not in the words, but how they sound; I don't understand a word they are saying, but they say so much.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan Teaser Trailer #2

So, last night's Lost... (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

gwiz665 says...

First of all, spoiler alert above please.

As someone who viciously hated the ending of Battlestar Galactica, I gotta say that this ending was far better. I gotta gather my thoughts a bit more and watch it again to make more pieces fit, but all in all, I have a good feeling about it.

Lost was always a show that showed and used supernatural elements, so the ending felt natural to me. In BSG the show prided itself on being more "tied to our reality" and turned on its head and fucked us over.

So, last night's Lost... (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

RedSky says...

This just shows the problem with X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Lost and most US TV shows in general. There's no coherent message tying the show together or clear reference material, they simply write as they go along and string it out as far as audiences allow them or to the point where they simply run out of any ideas, at which point they have to find a way to quickly tie together everything that's happened in some 5/10+ seasons. Obviously this ends in disappointment most of the time. If you want a coherent and resolving plot, go watch some good anime TV shows. The fact that they're based on reference material and typically peak at 13, 26 or 52 episodes mean they don't have these issues.

I gave up on the Lost main storyline a long time ago, the sticking point has always been the genuinely interesting back stories and developed characters. In some cases, especially with the series stalwarts which were never killed off, they took them maybe an arc too far into multiple personality disorder, but on the whole this has always been the best part of the show for me. Still can't help feeling dissapointed. It wasn't that they didn't resolve everything, it's that they didn't address anything. And saying that you're leaving things purposely open to interpretation is a synonym for laziness.
