Cincinnati Zoo Straps a GoPro to a Cheetah

Payback says...

Fuzzy thing on a long string. Sorta like the rabbit Greyhounds would chase around the betting tracks.

Kinda hard to take a Cheetah out for a walk, that in any real way would keep it healthy.

Cells have no "purpose"?

I think that depends on how you define "purpose". I don't think humans (or other animals / organisms) have any particular intrinsic purpose. At least, nothing granted to us by a higher power or outside influence or whatever. We assign purpose to ourselves, and to other fuzzy-boundary collections of things. Things that are "alive" exist to use energy, move, reproduce, etc. Things that are "tools" exist to be a preferable means of accomplishing some task. Etc.

If any of those things have "purpose", certainly cells can have a "purpose" as well. Neurons exist to transfer bio-electric currents. Rod and cone cells in our eyes exist to react to light in general or particular wavelengths of light.

I don't think that we have any physical or intangible soul that serves as the core of our being. We have cells, organs, and organ systems that make up a "meat computer" that provides us with consciousness (a word that we invented, but which describes a fairly concrete idea), and I would argue that consciousness is the closest thing that we have to a "soul".

At some point, if we can create a machine that emulates / replaces the functionality of all those cells, organs, and organ systems that are responsible for consciousness, and copy a snapshot of the states of all of that in an organic being (like us) into a mechanical counterpart, then ... yeah. I think that machine would be the organic being that it was a copy of, in a far more meaningful way than Henrietta's cancer cells are "her".

thanks man.
that rabbit hole goes much further.with the mention of dee and kelly who are responsible for the enochian (or angelic) alphabet, and also enochian magicks.which leads to crowley and the thoth tarot deck.

there can be some correlation between lovecrafts "old ones" and angels.we are not talking the cherub, fairy godmother type angels of childrens stories, but angels who are messengers of god, where gabriel is mentioned as being the size of a solar system an to gaze upon his actual countenance would render the observer mad.

none of that warm and fuzzy from fairy tales but horrors.

i loved studying those esoteric books but they always creeped me out, probably why i love lovecraft.

6 Things You Need To Get Right About Depression

AeroMechanical says...

I think the problem is, though they like to claim understanding, they really have no idea what the deal is with it or what causes it, and only fuzzy statistical data on how to treat it. I'd say what she says pretty much covers all it is they really know. I think this is why it's so hard to find a good therapist/psychologist. They can range from excellent to totally worthless (or worse), and diplomas and titles don't mean much. In my experience, the good ones are the ones that aren't married to a particular paradigm, and instead work almost entirely from their own personal experience of treating patients.

This tends to be the most frustrating thing of all, because it can take months and thousands of dollars to figure out if a given practitioner is any good. This is particularly difficult for people seeking treatment for the first time because their therapist tends to present themselves as having The Answer (as they naturally would), and if that doesn't work it's pretty discouraging for a person who doesn't need more discouragement. Um... where was I going? Right, well, I guess I'm saying the most important advice for new patients to understand your psychologist might suck or might just not be for you, and that's their problem not yours.

Since I suffer through this, I definitely appreciate the intent of the video. I will show this to my children, but...all the answers given are the most basic you can find on the subject...I expected much, much better from Big Think than the ABCs of depression.

Perhaps the next in the series will actually be more informative.

Toronto Police Officer? That doesn't count.

If you're going to be showing videos of Canadian officers on the job, most of them will probably be performing acts of kindness.

I don't know... Call me a pessimist, but these videos don't make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Perhaps it's because such nice acts seem too few and far between, and maybe because they're supposed to be the rule, not the exception.

Monday's Mona Lisa "Katy Perry"

lucky760 says...

As I stated, it wasn't about her email to us. I had no memory of it at the time she was blacklisted.

Yes, street team members, despite being fans, are still people involved with the promotion of a band and cannot submit such content to VideoSift. It doesn't matter at all that they aren't getting anything in return (other than a warm, fuzzy feeling); what matters is that their reason for submitting is to promote the band.

KellyMML is blacklisted for violating the posting guidelines. If anyone else submits in violation of the posting guidelines, they too will be banned. But there's no kind of content filter against your band or anything.

Thanks!

Yes, her email saying:

"I would like to know how I can get our video played on your website. It is being released today Monday Oct 20, 2014. It is titled "Katy Perry" by Monday's Mona Lisa."

to me would definitely look as if she were employed by this team. However she's NOT, and while I do understand your views on street teams being considered "qualified in promoting the bands content", that view actually spans an incredibly large spectrum of people.

Working in the entertainment industry for 20 years now, I can promise you that street teams which are set up by the fans themselves are nothing more than fans who group themselves together and create their own "job" so to speak, and share something they enjoy. Does it help push an entertainer forward? Of course it does. Does the entertainer have any connection other than "thank you to our fans"? No, not unless it's an official street team employed by the artist through payment or gifts of merchandise/tickets/etc.

I'm not at all concerned with someone randomly coming across this post and viewing MML in a negative light now that I've found it an been able to explain the situation. I am however a little bummed that their video can't be up here because of how the fans email was written. This particular video is actually the type of content that gets shared because of it's comedy factor to be honest, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to know that others may attempt to share it at a later date because of that.

One question I have, is it only "KellyMML" that is blacklisted from here? Or is it anything related to this band?

Thanks in advance.
