Ark - CGI animated short film

jmd says...

I get tired of this style of humanoids. I've seen many works and while some work, there is always a subset like this which reveal themselves as badly looking humanoids because the artist sucks at making humanoids.

Also you can tell this was pretty much done by one or more cg artist, and no writers amongst them. It leads you with a text intro into a futuristic plot, at which point it follows one man. Every second the movie plays along, more and more questions get asked. At the end, the storyline was a fake.. and this guys just a wacked out old man in hospital called ark. This is where the big problem arises. The story at the very end is abruptly called false and the new storyline which last like 30 seconds, has 2 connections with the old story line, the name of the hospital and the shape of the hospital. Thats it... so why do we care? What do we walk away from this movie with? I'll tell you what... a ton of questions from the main storyline that never get answered and zero questions from the ending.

If I really liked tormenting myself like this I would make a habit of watching every tv show to the 18 minute mark and then quickly switch over to the home shopping network.

Realistic Pencil Drawing of Hiro Nakamura From Heroes

rottenseed says...

yes I am a scoff artist, der.

Never considered this as an art, more as a talent. Don't get me wrong, it may be hard to do but it's still doesn't impress me...kind of like pen spinning or yo-yo play.

Now Syd Mead on the other hand...that type of realism from inside his very own cranium is, to me, art.

Wipeout 64 / Pulse / Pure / XL / 2097 / HD / Fusion

Farhad2000 says...

Wipeout has been one of my favorite games since it's release on the PC, it was the first I remember playing that would really convey the feeling of actually racing at preposterous speeds.

The interesting thing is that the original developers actually hired professional designers to come up with the distinctive look and feel of the futuristic world, especially in the logos and various billboards around the race tracks. Some of which you can see in the video above.

The soundtrack was perfect as well featuring throughout the series artists like Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Leftfield and Cold Storage. Electronic techno beats that leaded themselves perfectly to the anti-gravity racing.

Monsanto's House of The Future

spoco2 says...

What this shows more than anything was that it was never really the 'house of the future' as it was touted, but moreso a whopping big ad for using plastics for everything.

And we now know how environmentally friendly THAT is.

I have to say the few melamine plates and things we have are horrible (kids things)... they can't be washed in the dishwasher, they tend to discolour over time, and all round they're nowhere near as nice to use as china et al.

So to be so effusive over plastic plates, cups, glasses etc. is to miss the point that we as humans actually like the tactile feel and usability of glass, china, wood, etc.

And vinyl floors... mmm, we all know how lovely they are.

The few 'futuristic' things they have demonstrate the view of 'sci fi' things for their sake alone with no thought as to their actual usefulness. The powered cupboards have not surprisingly never taken off due to:
* Who needs another thing to break and be serviced?
* Who wants to stand around and wait for them to sloooowly open?

Doing all your cooking in a microwave has been relegated to only those who have no real taste for actual food.

Ultrasonic dish washing obviously doesn't really work that well (Not that I've looked that up)

Also love the signs of the times like the woman donning her apron, and the husband later offering a smoke to her.

Computer Animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars Teaser Trailer

Farhad2000 says...

Watching the first 3 and the last 3 movies its so easy to see how George Lucas fucked it up, the first 3 movies were more based around the story set in wonderful universe, the effects were there to flesh it out, since it used models and props everything looked aged, scratched, filled with pockmarks from repeated laser blasts. The actors were in sets as well, it was easier to imagine Anakin's home world because they actually went and filmed in the Tunisian desert, Han Solo and Chewie actually sat in a cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. There was a tangible reality to the setting and events.

The last 3 movies were more about bombastic effects & CGI wankery, I mean really what was the reason behind Jar jar or that big disgusting thing Obi Wan meets in some diner? "ILM can do fake looking annoying characters" I actually remember that off one of their interviews.

The whole story of the first 3 movies was setting up the last 3, you already knew what was going to happen. It could have been a wonderful dramatic vehicle to see how Anakin slowly turns to the Dark Side by successive loses, where the power is the seducing factor not some old creep. But even then nothing was surprising or tangible because how are actors supposed to relate to something to the backdrop of a green screen? All the principal actors are award winning, yet they looked as convincing as the CGI characters because how are you supposed to emote to directions like "There is a big monster, look scared" or "You see thousands of Stormtroopers and a huge battle is taking place". Furthermore how is it that the past ends up looking far more advanced and futuristic then the present, its like they warped back in time technologically. But that just clarifies how visual effects took importance over the story line and characters.

George Lucas was never a good director of actors, he was always great behind the scenes making the effects work, and you can see how that took precedent in the last 3 films over making the story actually work. In some instances he seemingly just gave up, especially when Liam deduced Anakin's power by simple blood test, it killed the magical mythos of what being a Jedi was, and how it was so appealing to kids. The original 3 made it seem like being a Jedi was about believing in yourself, allowing the force take root within you.

The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars film because it dared to be black, it dared to be a wonderful fantasy fable set in the future and more so it was actually directed by someone who sought to bring life and drama to the characters and events.

The Clone Wars special on Cartoon Network were amazing, they combined high fantasy with some actual character leanings, and in my opinion actually were better then the final film, which I thought was a enormous let down. Anakin becoming Darth Vader should have been the darkest chapter, yet it was all reduced to him being told by Emperor that his girl died, he screams "Nooooooo" and then is like "Okay so now am evil".

Michio Kaku - Profile of a Physicist

Irishman says...

One of the most speculative, boring, wishy-washy people in the physics/futurist/lecturer scene. His books are exceptionally bland and over-simplified.

There is so much better and exciting physics happening right now than the utter drivel that drips from this guy's head.
