Tank Restorers Discover Gold Bars Hidden in ex Iraqi Tank

jimnms says...

There was a movie like that. I think it was three or four friends hunting in a forest find a crashed plane with bags of cash in it. They kept the money and reported the plane crash, then got greedy and killed each other or something. It wasn't a great movie and it was a long time ago, so the details didn't stick with me.

Living Off the Grid in Paradise

nanrod says...

My point was that everything he uses on a day to day basis is a product of civilization. Has he given up some aspects of civilization, the internet, cell phones, TV? Sure but people in the middle of cities do the same. Water supply grid? I don't live on the water supply grid. Living off of rainwater isn't easy in some places? What has that got to do with this video. The man lives in a temperate rain forest surrounded by glacier topped mountains. So everything he needs or requires is more difficult to get or to get to. That doesn't mean that he's living some kind of noble "off the grid life style"

harlequinn said:

You forgot they're off of the water supply "grid" (try living off of rainwater - it's not so easy in some places), the daily food supply "grid" (most people would be screwed without this alone), the emergency services "grid" (for some medical conditions he is buggered, nobody is coming any time soon), the consumable resource supply "grid" (i.e. something breaks, buy a new one the same day).

There's probably more I have missed. How many of these things do you live without on a daily basis?

They have abandoned large segments of "civilisation". There isn't some special line in the sand the you choose that makes them living off of the grid or not.

Shit, 99% of us here don't have to hunt for our own dinner. That alone is a huge difference.

Friends Create DIY Ski Lift

...tears of joy. ;-)

There was one of these in a national forest near me, with wheels attached to numerous trees used as pulleys to hold the downhill rope up and a tireless motorcycle providing power from the top. It's far longer (150-200 yards) and steeper than this one. Now it's abandoned with the motorcycle gone, but it was used for years. Old school.
They used to have these at real commercial slopes with handles attached, they were called T-lifts.

"Uhhh, hello from the flight deck. This is your captain speaking, Captain Badass. We are currently flying at an altitude of negative 1 feet. If you look out your right window you will see water. If you check your left, more water. Don't worry folks, first were going to blast the shit out of a forest fire, do it all over again, then have you home for dinner. Thanks again for flying Adventure Airlines!"

Oregon Polar Bear Awakes to Snow. BLISS!

We need manure to feed the world. Anything else will pollute earth and water even more.
Rain forest is also destroyed to make room for "bio" fuel plantations and other monocultures.
Maybe we find a way to collect sheep farts and use them, like here:

Not just CO2 production. Also use of fresh water resources. Polluted water from feces collection (and yes, conventional agriculture is polluting water with chemical runoff.) In places, the cutting down of rain forest to create areas for beef production. The huge overhang of methane over New Zealand from all the farting sheep (that would be part of the CO2 mentioned. But I can't pass up the opportunity to actually type "farting sheep.")

"Beautiful creatures" are in danger. Not just these.

And I do eat meat. And drive my car. And am a hypocrite.

I agree that the tech exists, but to implement enough of that tech (in the time left) to change how humanity abuses our resources would take more resources than exist, leaving the tech swap 2/3 finished and the planet barren.....if you could convince everyone to go along.
Had we started moving in that direction 35+ years ago, maybe, but at this point the greenhouse gasses already in the atmosphere will cause climate change that's already decimated the forests and will continue to get worse, even if we go 100% green today. It's too late for tech, population control, or much else.....and the methane is just starting to be a factor.
If we just moved into the forests and abandoned tech, the forests wouldn't last one year.
If we eradicate 9/10 of the population, we don't have to change so much and the planet can absorb our damages without destroying the systems life relies on, then we just need to mitigate the damage already done instead of continuing to add to it. The best way imo was as you suggest, have people get fixed and quit having children the planet can't support...but it's too late for that even if we cut 3.2 billion nutsacks today. As I see it, we need to be fully invested in numerous plans to both stop making things worse (population, food issues, climate change, pollution, etc) and make some painful sacrifices to repair the damage done by the "greatest generation" and their spawn.

People have to fucking change. They don't need to eradicate forests to do these things, there are plenty of sustainable architectural / eco living books out there. Plenty of space out in the desert and there is plenty of ocean water to filter. Plus, so much tech to help with this wave of transformation.

I do agree that simply put, people need to get snipped. Continue fucking but STOP having kids, please!

Well, OK. I do love me some Chris Hedges, but god damn - the left is never going to win anything with tone like this. No one *wants* to listen to it. Sure, they should, but it's hard to be annihilated by the truth when it's spoken in a piercing frequency, lol.

I think that is what Sanders was trying to do - the political establishment understands this "Tweet" culture, of simple-minded ADHD, ritalin addicts who know nothing about politics, or the truth so you basically have to keep it short & sweet. I definitely don't believe Sanders would have made any better impact as an Independent (except for the fact that I would have voted for him), I agree - he didn't teach us much, but he kept it slightly angry (good tone though and tone is huge) and simple for mass consumption.

I love this but why are they so dumbfounded about the dog on the trampoline? Timing was perfect on all the shots but if my dog immediately started jumping on a trampoline I would be like, "Coooooooooooool -- doggy!" Then I'd be jumping along with him. Like immediately.

Now, I know it's not the same grounded story arc, but what if she walks outside and all the animals are still jumping about and there's a queue of additional animals leading out of the backyard into an enchanted forest? That would dumbfound me.

But it wouldn't be about the dog, so I guess it doesn't work.

But maybe he rushes past the other animals, knocking them over like dominoes, then rambunctiously jumps around the trampoline like a buffoon tossing around the critters who were once jumping in coordination. Now pan out: "Gifts that everyone will love"

Not a great song, a little heavy handed, but some fantastic visuals. Pikachu in the wasteland... haha.

I actually experienced something like the bit @1:24 a few weeks ago, while hiking in a national forest (in the fall, in New England). I whipped out my phone to snap a pic of a fern, and noticed that, despite being surrounded by absolute beauty, my S3 still pushes the saturation up on the display when I'm taking a picture. Everything was already so colorful that it was immediately noticeable, and gave me the horrible impression of facsimile. Very much the real version of that bit from the video.

Lots of tech shit is getting freaky lately.

Canada Lynx Saved From Trap

newtboy says...

I find it disgusting and outrageous that people are still allowed to use this kind of indiscriminate trapping these days at all. There's no way to keep endangered, or unwanted animals from being killed or injured to the point where they'll likely die later.
I would like to think I would destroy any I found, and/or use them on the trapper if I found them, leaving them pinned in the forest with both arms and legs attached to separate trees in hopes that the animal they were going for finds them and has a nice treat.
Just sickening. I hope at least this one animal didn't die a horrendous, painful, long, torturous death by starvation, but with the injured leg, it still may have.
