Keanu Reeves Gun Practice

AeroMechanical says...

I like that little extra shell-ring thingy he's got on the shotgun you can see him using to reload right before the slow motion bit. I've never seen one of those before and at first I thought he was pushing a mis-fired shell back into the chamber (or whatever you call it in a shotgun, the breach?), which asking about was the reason I started this comment until I watched it a third time.

I've never fired a semi-automatic shotgun (or any kind of shotgun since I was 15 or so) but I do recall a 12-gauge having a not insignificant amount of recoil, and I've heard from a SWAT guy that semi-automatic shotguns are frowned upon because people in panic-firefight-mode tend to pull the trigger too fast and end up shooting the ceiling. He seems to have no problem though.

The Case for the 32-Hour Workweek

SDGundamX says...

It really depends on your occupation, I suppose.

When I worked in the game industry we had monthly deadlines that had to get met or the publisher would pull their funding and the developer would go belly up. Sometimes we could meet those deadlines comfortably. Sometimes things would go wrong and we'd have to sleep at our desks or be out of a job because the company wouldn't be there in the morning if we didn't get the work done.

Other occupations, like firefighting, have the opposite problem--lots of downtime with sudden intense bursts of activity.

But I suppose any job that is a typical 9-5 gig could benefit from examining what the companies in this video have done.

Structure Fire from Firefighter's helmet cam

DrkCntry says...

Calling them idiots? This coming from a person not understanding the job they are performing. The two on the roof are relieving pressure in the building as well as creating ingress and egress points, ingress for the water and egress for the fire pressure.

Building fires create a serious amount of pressure due to the expanding air in a very confined, and pretty well insulated, environment. This is the same actions you see firefighters breaking out windows to expel a large portion of said pressure. It also allows a fire to expand in a more controlled and less volatile way (see: explosive backdrafts).

The guy using the 'poker' is looking for structural weakness, both for the safety of the crew on the roof, as well as the 'cutter' to have the most direct access to the higher 'heat areas'.

notarobot said:

These guys are idiots. They should be operating from a ladder placed ON the roof in case there is a collapse.

The gear they have will protect from ambient heat for a while, but only for a very short time in direct flame. The face masks, for example, are made of acrylic. If the heat gets much over 400ish degrees, and they will start to melt. If any of these guys fell trough the roof into a fully involved fire, they wouldn't have much time. And those suits aren't very mobile.

Deray McKesson: Eloquent, Focused Smackdown of Wolf Blitzer

I contend that common experiences rules most people's feelings, not racism.

A carpenter will eat his lunch with another carpenter. Someone who works in a lab will eat their lunch with a co-worker from the same lab, not the lab two doors down.

Two firefighters will be drawn to one another due to common experience.

Islam Vs Racism

Mammaltron says...

The EDL (represented here by the driver) certainly seem to be pretty horrible shits.

However my own liberal live-and-let-live inclinations definitely face a problem when confronted with radical Islam and other toxic memes.

How does such a liberal philosophy deal with an opposing philosophy which will fundamentally not live-and-let-live?

It's the pacifist versus the warrior, and moral victories are a bit useless when they are posthumous.

Of course none of this is helped by the moneyfuckers led by the United States and Great Britain, who are more than happy with this fire while they are selling fuel and firefighting equipment.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wealth Gap

Asmo says...

Australia for arguments sake, but your assumption that my post was about one upping the US is incorrect.

I find the situation sad when so many people are so poorly treated by a system and yet still perpetuate that system. You mention not being able to play a game due to a lack of freedom, but how is that an issue compared to not getting medical or dental care for a child? Access to life saving drugs without mortgaging not only your own future, but the future of your kids. Oh woo-fucking-hoo, you can buy the handful of games our censors knocked on the head, but you can't feed your homeless or pay your retired police/firefighters pensions. You can't guarantee a living wage for huge swathes of the population so a few people can have even larger money vaults. Your security apparatus crawls through your vaunted rights at will, and convinces the populace that the guy shining a light on just how undermined US freedom really is, is a traitor...

If all I was concerned about is feeling superior, I could stop right there, mission accomplished.

But it's not. It's fucking sick that so many people eek out shitty existences for the protection and perpetuation of a tiny portion of the population. Feudalism at least was honest, you were born in the dirt and you died in the dirt.

American's are, from my experience, just people like everyone else. For the most part, wonderful people. I've met so many great people on my travels to the US. They deserve better, they fought and bled and worked for better. So how is it most never even get close?

It's not about who's better, or more fortunate, or who's national dick is collectively longer. It's about giving good people a fair chance rather than the so called 'representatives' conspiring to stack the game against them.

Where do you live exactly because I'm guessing that I can find similar propaganda tools in your society as well. The United States is unique in a few ways, and it's Public Relations Machine is absolutely amazing. Hitler and Goebbels copied it because at the time it was the most advanced in the world at Manufacturing Consent.

I meet some people from foreign countries who like to run America down in some ways and they're correct a lot of the time and sometimes I participate with them. There are other times though where say someone from the UK or France speaks up and I just have to slam them down. The UK is a joke with it's rules against broadcasting and freedom of speech, an absolutely backward democracy. France is way WAY worse in regards to it's worship of academias charlatans. Just bullshit constantly being peddled in both places that would NEVER fly in the United States.

And Australia specifically because I know there's some Aussies on the board that like to run America and the UK down. Do you guys like being told what video game is ok to buy? Do you like trying to find your way around archaic bullshit rules that the US public would've fucking smashed in a second if they were even suggested?

America has a lot of fucking problems, and this is certainly tied to the biggest. The fact that we will go through another HUGE crash in a couple years that will be worse than the 2008 one. It might actually solve our fucking problems though. The first crash caused some serious organization and it had to be put down violently. It didn't continue with serious steam because a lot of people were still doing ok. What about the next horrible crash that should be much much bigger. You think organization will be difficult then? It's only a matter of time, and it's looking good for the activists. Sadly time is not on our side with regards to the planet.

Vermont Becomes The First State To Pass Wolf PAC Resolution

My_design says...

Can someone explain to me why...
PAC's are bad, bad, evil things supported by companies that use their money to influence politicians to get their way - destroy the environment, screw over employees and in general try to generate as much revenue as possible, but Unions are good groups that exert control over a ton of votes and money that they donate to politicians who in turn award them with generous pensions and benefits that bankrupt the State. So why don't we get Unions out of elections as well as PACs? Look at all the commercials during election seasons that are sponsored by the Teachers Union, Police Union, Firefighters Union, Ditch Diggers Union, on and on and on. Its to the point where the PAC and the Union commercials have become a blur.

Fighting Racism In Sports For All Races... Well Almost All

lantern53 says...

They are not eradicating racism. They are only eradicating any personal expression of belief. Banning Donald Sterling from the NBA is right out of 1984.
Racism can only be eradicated by a realization that all people are created of God.
Personally, I will still gravitate toward white people, just as black people gravitate toward black people. It is due to shared experience.
When the movie Planet of the Apes was being filmed and the actors went off to eat lunch, the gorillas sat with the gorillas, the chimps sat with the chimps, and the orangutans sat with their fellows. It wasn't racism, it was shared experience.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063442/trivia
Just as I would rather sit with a black cop than a white firefighter because the cop and I share a common experience.

Make Your Dreams Come True

artician says...

What an incredibly vapid clip. There was a clip of some firefighters near the end, otherwise if you have a dream of helping others, reuniting nations, eliminating poverty, reforming government, or anything that's not an individual thrill-sport, you're dreams aren't making the cut!
