Women in Martial Arts, an homage

jmzero says...

There are kicks and then there are kicks. If you can kick that high in slow motion and/or repeatedly like these women can, then you can kick fast and hard at those heights once.

Well, not really. The techniques are very different. One might as well say that if they have this much flexibility, and can do something this hard, that they would be great at kicking field goals. It doesn't matter which is harder or that they both involve moving your foot around - it's completely different skills with completely different goals and measures.

Look at what their hips are doing. Look at what their arms are doing. It's all wrong - they're generating no power (and - to be fair - they can't, because to do so without hitting something would mean they couldn't balance and obviously you need a lot of balance to do these gymnastic runs). But, in the end, the only commonality between a proper martial arts kick and what they're doing is that their foot ends up moving from one place to another.

Could these people also be capable of kicking something hard in a martial arts way? Of course. In fact, I'm sure most of them are pretty good at it. But it's two very different skills and the skill they're demonstrating here is gymnastics.

Just because they only showcase a portion of their skill doesn't mean that they can't kick faster, harder and better than cro cop

Well, yes. Just because they can do this stuff doesn't mean they can't kick faster, harder and better than Crocop. Similarly, my excellent Videosift posting skills do not prove I'm not the world's best hot dog eater. Odds are I'm not though. Regardless of odds (and we pretty much just dealing with odds, because the skills they're showing here are just not that relevant), in this case, we do have other relevant evidence that these women aren't kicking harder than Crocop. Again, regardless of their horrible mechanics (which can be excused by the techniques they're executing), just look at their legs. These women are not capable, just in sheer muscular presence, of generating the same force Crocop does.

I'm sure you have an interesting treatise on how muscle mass doesn't correlate with the force that can be generated by that muscle. If you post something like that, please do not feel insulted when I do not respond to it.

Police Brutality in Victoria, BC.

Payback says...

Victoria police issued a statement about the incident on Tuesday.

"At around 12:30 a.m. three officers on foot patrol witnessed a fight involving eight males and saw a victim of an assault lying on the ground being kicked in the head by a suspect," the statement reads. "The officers eventually wrestled six people into custody."

"The victim found lying on the ground was rushed to hospital with a head injury, he was treated and released and is refusing to cooperate with police. The combatants were all released without charges approximately 45 minutes later."

One of the field goal attempts, Harpinder Kang, plans to sue the police. Unfortunately for him, Canadian courts don't work the way they do in the States.

O'Reilly: Is Obama The Devil?

sepatown says...

"So you don't think he is the devil, but you do think he probably should've made that field goal attempt."

"So you don't think he is the devil, but you do think his latest films have been a little disappointing."

just so we're clear.

Holy crap... how have I not seen some of those? That field goal one is like Randy Johnson hitting a bird with a baseball pitch... I guess it was bound to happen some time. I love the old man side-stepping the rally car, seeming to gently touch the hood.

Great compilation, good sifting!

UCI Gets Away with a Faulty Hidden Ball Trick Against LSU

NordlichReiter says...

After playing 8 years of baseball all the way to senior level in high school, I have some experience with this.. indeed it got me once in an exhibition game. This is a judgment call, and the umpire cannot take it back. Once the inning changes and people go into the dugout its over you cant take it back.

In this case the umpire was wrong. Every one except the pitcher is allowed to deceive a runner. If you are pitcher and its a tight game do not risk the balk. Which means ball + walk, the batter get a ball and the runner can walk to another base.

Another thing any hidden ball trick involving the pitcher is immediately illegal. The pitcher cannot, ever attempt to deceive the runners. We call this a balk, which does not need the pitcher engaged to the mound.

Trick plays happen all the time (Center sneak - football, Fake field goals, and the pitcher changing the pitch mid wind up: that used to piss me off as a catcher. Me and the pitcher would have a long angry discussion.) its not a trick its misdirection, you better be on your toes or it will get you.

Incredible game-winning, 15 lateral score for a TD

rychan says...

But this isn't rugby, so what's your point? If they kicked the ball around between each other for a minute before sending it through the uprights for a field goal, would you say that's usual for soccer? Do you think a pitcher throwing a 100mph fastball is uninteresting because tennis player serve for 140? Because your complaint is just as baseless.

Three big differences come to mind. In Rugby, the tackler has to attempt to wrap his arms around the player he is tackling and has to avoid the head, so you can't usually just demolish someone. An offensive player will often have a chance to pass the ball off while being pulled down. Furthermore, once someone is tackled in Rugby (knee down, etc) the play can continue if they get rid of the ball soon enough. And probably the biggest difference, there is no blocking in Rugby, so you know that your offensive support will be available to catch your passes. In football the defensive players can block out all of the offensive players.
