Theft by Deception - a history of tax law

MINK says...

fascinating exchange here.

however, the point you are both missing is that if there is this much confusion and debate possible... the law should be clarified, in the open, for all to see. (so should the disconnect between income tax and provision of services)

btw private services are also "shite", i have lived in 2 countries while they privatised their phone companies, and both times service got worse, not better. The customer service help line people have absolutely no need to answer my calls because they are beholden to shareholders, not to me, and there aren't any other companies putting a line to my house, even though i live in the centre of a capital city.

why build 6 identical fibre networks and compete to rip up the pavement? or why divide the bandwidth between 6 companies so they can pretend to compete? nonsense.
if a train is late, can i really choose another train company? don't talk bollocks.

and remember there are things the market cannot measure.

High-power slime from the hagfish - one of nature's miracles

djsunkid says...

from wikipedia:

It has also recently been discovered that the mucus excreted by the hagfish is unique in that it includes strong, threadlike fibres similar to spider silk. What is interesting about hagfish slime is that it is fibre-reinforced. No other slime secretion known is reinforced with fibres in the way Hagfish slime is. The fibres are about as fine as spider silk (averaging two micrometres), but can be twelve centimetres long. When the coiled fibres leave the Hagfishes' 'slime' gland, they unravel quickly to their full length without tangling. Research continues into potential uses for this or a similar synthetic gel or of the included fibres. Some possibilities include new biodegradable polymers, space-filling gels, and as a means of stopping blood flow in accident victims and surgery patients.

Pretty neat!

Fixing a Plane's wing with Duct-tape. Only in India?

Farhad2000 says...

I think I heard about this in Popular Science a while back, something that's an aluminum alloy sheet and and some fibre composite that is good for minor corrosive repairs. I think a pilot would know better.

VideoSift server restart? (Sift Talk Post)

benjee says...

Weird fault if it's the network here at work: firstly, as every other site worked fine; secondly, as it's a large educational institution (has a fat fibre-optic link under the Atlantic, called SuperJANET - a nice name!)

Japanese toilet training video

persephone says...

The floating poo looked a lot like Mr. Hanky.
I couldn't help notice how the boy is straining to do a poo, and how this is not a good habit to promote. I mean if it's that hard, the person needs some fibre or something, right? Maybe this is typical for many Japanese, because I remember when I lived in Japan all my female friends were always comlaining of being constipated. I thought at the time it was a diet thing, because virtually nobody eats wholewheat bread, or brown rice there, and veges are usually well-cooked or pickled, not much raw stuff. I bet one day when Japanese health authorities cotton onto this problem, there'll be a new video for toilet habits which shows non-fibre eaters straining away, and big fibre eaters pooing happily. Japanese never miss the opportunity to explore a poo topic in the cutest, if not graphic way possible.
