Not the slinky i remember

bremnet says...

This must be the civilian version. I am convinced that, like the hoola hoop, the original metal Slinky was actually a failed experiment by the defense industry to create a hand thrown weapon that could inflict great entanglement on the target, and with sufficient velocity, bleeding. At least that's how things normally wound up when we got bored of walking them down the stairs and started swinging them over our heads.

CNN: Guns In Japan

newtboy says...

Wait...your take there is that Muslims are <1/4 as violent as Christians? Did you get whiplash turning around that fast?
What would I propose?
First, more assistance for the indigent, as economic status is far more important than race when determining a person's likelihood to use a gun on others. Remove the desperation, I expect you stop well over 1/2 of gun violence.
Second, recognizing that fighting the advanced military with semi auto rifles is futile, I would ban all full auto and mods, and extended mags with a buy back at market value (granted, a ban doesn't remove them, but stops more from being legally sold).
Don't pretend that, because that wouldn't stop all gun crime, it's useless. There is no silver bullet, that's no reason to take a moonlit walk on the moors during werewolf season. You can't stop all auto deaths, but we still stop people from jogging on the freeway

Edit: I agree with better mental health reporting/testing and better background checks (not necessarily longer, but remove the congressional roadblocks to making it near instant, nation wide, computerized, and more thorough)
Gun free zones are a failed experiment...ask DC. Unless you search everyone and everything entering the zone, it's worse than useless.

Pakistan are 95%+ Muslime They follow a higher power..
371 murder cases, 28 cases of gang murder, nine of abduction for ransom, 4 terrorism incidents were registered in 2015,
not quite as violent as America.

Then look at who is doing the shooting?
Lone nuts--- insignificant
Pissed off spouses -- insignificant
Inner city gang bangers -- root cause of American gun violence

Inner cities have excessive gun violence. Why is that?
No jobs?
No respect for life?
No desire to educate oneself to get out of the situation?
No real deterrent for gun use?

Would a strict gun free zone in such high gun use are be an OK solution that carries the strictest punishment for those that commit crimes with guns ( as apposed to guns being used to defend)? Ho about a 1 year of PSA on the local media before it goes into effect? then strictly enforced?

Until you can get people to respect life and or use the strictest punishment -- I think this will continue.

Better mental health links to ATF where friends and worker can nark to the ATF? This also might help send a flag to re investigate and or to investigate even more on the background check.

Longer waiting period to give ATF more time to do more thorough background check.

Curiosity Rover Mars Descent - Hi-res video released Aug 19

ReverendTed says...

I know that in science, there is no such thing as a "failed experiment".
But there is certainly such a thing as an unqualified success. Well done.

Did you hear about the cancelled sequel, though? They were considering landing a Space Boat in a Methane Lake on the surface of Titan.
But no, we're going back to Mars to drill a hole. Booooring.
(Yes, I kid, but dang.)

panspermia comes closest but considering i am a man of faith this reflects only a part of how i view things, not the whole.
i could check theistic evolution but that too would be an incomplete and inaccurate choice for me.
i am not a theist.

viewing the universe as creation, then panspermia and abiogenesis fit quite well into my view.
evolution is the poetry of creation and far more beautiful and awe-inspiring than any creation myth.
the problem many theists and fundamentalists have with that view is that it removes them from the "special" list and puts them exactly where they should be:a part of the natural cycle of things.

no anthropomorphized big daddy in the sky judging your every thought, action and word.
just life.
pushing,striving,fighting and marching forward.
on this planet we attained self-awareness first.
are their other species on other distant planets that may have done the same?
the odds are in their favor.
why?
because thats what life does.

theists may retort:
but the bible (and other religious texts) state that we were made in the image of GOD.
we are...
but so is the weed in your back yard and the ant crawling up its stem and the soil in which that weed derives its nutrients.

theists may stomp their feet:
but that means we are not special!what about gods plan!?!
you are here yes?
you have self awareness and consciousness yes?
you are part of the natural cycle and are aware of that cycle yes?
then you are not only part of the plan but aware of it.
that makes you special.

the human race may live on for a millenia in one form or another,
we may travel to the stars and spread far and wide, traversing the galaxy and spreading life wherever we may go.(gods plan)
or we may end in a violent (or not so violent) way just another failed experiment.
but life?
life will go on.
and another species will attain self awareness and ask the question:
why am i here?
what is my purpose?

and the cycle continues.......

CloudFlare and an Apology for Recent Down Time (Sift Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

We definitely lost some traffic during that failed experiment, but not permanently. Alexa is a bit delayed and kind of inaccurate IMHO. We seem to be firing on all cylinders again now though. CloudFlare is definitely on my shit list. Reminds me I must go tweet about this. >> ^eric3579:

It seems site traffic has been down quite a bit this week. Was curious if the CloudFare was responsible and if you think we will be getting it back. From the one month traffic chart on Alexa, it looks like we have lost 40% to 50% of our avg. monthly traffic this week. Just very curious. @lucky760 @dag

Discrimination is a right?

cracanata says...

Of course is all wrong to discriminate. But I think the % of people siding with the Muslim woman would radically decrease in the case of a Muslim man.
I consider this a failed experiment to portrait the Muslim hate in America but rather to be an experiment on women discrimination.

Ron Paul Interview On DeFace The Nation 11/20/11

heropsycho says...

The simple fact is the vast majority of educational policy is already done by the state and local governments, and it obvious to anyone who teaches. I was a public school teacher for 4 years in Virginia. What impacted me more, NCLB or Virginia Standards of Learning? The SOW's by a very wide margin.

What you're suggesting is the federal gov't should play no role whatsoever in educational policy. It's not a case of all or nothing. NCLB is an example, and I agree with you, of bad national education policy. But many states are also enacting standardized multiple choice tests for state accepted curriculum, and judge teacher effectiveness based on these scores, which is IMO also bad policy. Bad policy can come from federal, state, or local government. Why would you think federal gov't is any more likely to generate bad policy than any other level of gov't? And past that, NCLB being a mistake is not a good point for abolishing the Dept. Of Edu. It's an argument to change federal education policy.

Sure, there's a portion of educational policy where what works for one state doesn't work for another. However, there's also shared policy that's in common across all states, too. Across the US for example, there is an increased demand for workers with technology skills. Federal gov't initiatives can help facilitate that. Federal tax dollars have also helped to supplement state and local gov't funding for education, too. A federal apparatus is useful in these situations.

>> ^Grimm:

It's easy to say "just change bad policy". But the reality is when the Federal government has control it's not an easy thing to do. Why do you have a problem with putting that power back in the hands of the states? What works for one state may not work for another. Or what works for one state can then be adopted by other states who are looking for a better solution.
No child left behind is finally getting repealed....but how long did that take? Good for the new students...but what about the kids like mine that had to live with that failed experiment for the last 10 years?
