Eh again, I wouldn't have minded the changes but when i can tell it's CGI (easily) it makes me feel like im watching a cartoon instead of a movie. With puppets at least it's something on screen that looks like it can be 'touched' by the audience. I see that CGI and start thinking about how the actors are interacting with nothing and it pulls me out of my 'movie experience' mode.

On the 7,000 years thing, no I don't think it would need some kind of preservative because animals err sand monsters (lol) like this one would probably be classified as decomposers. Decomposers can break down just about anything but this one would probably use a combination of bacteria and weak enzymes (sort of like a big stomach) to get the job done.

EDIT: I think about it now, and I did let the enzymes in my brain lead my finger to type the above statements. However it was remarkably enjoyable.

i like these visualizations better when they put in the 'noise' of other chemicals and proteins and enzymes all banging against each other... this is so clean that it makes things look very miraculous and directed when they're usually not.

High-Fructose Corn Syrup Commercial?! FTW!

9466 says...

Indeed, manipulative as the ad is, there is is no use fighting this stuff with FUD.
There have been a few basic studies on the dietary impact of glucose and fructose, particular in relation to insulin.

In terms of satiety, this is a fairly recent report :
^ Monsivais et al. (2007). "Sugars and satiety: does the type of sweetener make a difference?". American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 86: 116–123.

Chemically the corn syrup (55% fructose and 45% glucose) used in foods is very similar to sucrose (50% fructose and 50% glucose) and thus mimics its apparent sweetness.
The chief difference, aside from the slight increase in fructose is that sucrose is a disaccharide - the fructose and glucose are covalently bonded by a condensation reaction (removal of a H20).
Corn syrup however, consists of individual molecules of glucose and fructose, which aside from tasting different, can be absorbed more readily by the body : The body requires an enzyme to break down the sucrose into fructose and glucose.

It's pretty clear that refined foods are for the most part bad for us because they deliver nutrients in concentrations far greater than we could ever get by harvesting food by hand. High concentrations of fructose could be problematic.
Honey from bees contains free fructose and glucose molecules (48%,47%), and so would pose a similar risk - the main difference is that honey is not consumed in such vast concentrations as found in soft drinks.

If you really want to taste how much sugar is in a soft drink. Let it go cold and flat and see how much you can drink.

So sadly, I think the advert does have a point: It is probably fine in moderation though perhaps they should have stated (and like honey, it is fine in moderation).

Is that some Red Drink she's having?

HFCS-55 and HFCS-42 are "made from corn" but so are some forms of plastic.

And "doesn't contain any artificial ingredients" is hilarious. It's made using a genetically modified enzyme and requires a huge amount of processing that refines it down to the point it no longer has anything to do with corn.
Due to the FDA having no definition of "natural", a product would have to be made of 100% ground ghosts to stop being natural. At least we can be assured it contains no supernatural ingredients.

I know, I hate their lies. "natural," thanks for the laugh!

How to Grow Bean Sprouts

laura says...

When you soak them, rinse them, and like they say leave them upside down like that (rinsing every day)... as soon as they get the first leaves, put them in the sun (in the jar) and they will get beautifully green, at which point you can float them all in a big bowl of cool water and all of the husks/unsprouted seeds will skim off the top or sink to the bottom! This leaves you with your sprouts which you can then keep in the fridge in a container lined with wet paper towels to eat all week. Awesome on a tuna sandwich, alone, or as a salad with dinner. You can sprout any bean or seed. Our favs are broccoli seed (sprout is more spicy), mung bean, lentils, and alfalfa (which you can spend upwards of $2.00 for in the grocery store!). Never underestimate the power of those enzymes, you know...

Venus Fly Trap time lapse

snoozedoctor says...

The fly trap is indigenous to the coastal bogs of North and South Carolina. I grew up in this area. When I was 5 I would hunt for them in the nearby forest. I kept trying to transplant them around the foundation of our house. I would water them and give them dead flies, not knowing they need live flies to stimulate the release of their digestive enzymes. No matter how much attention I paid them, they would wither and die. Anyhow, due to habitat destruction, they are endangered and protected.

Religion and Science. (Blog Entry by gorgonheap)

blankfist says...

I don't mean to sound offensive or that I'm attacking you, Doc_M, but that sounds like a lot of doublespeak. You write: "A pure atheist will say that since there is no god in the first place, the ONLY option is random evolution (via good ole natural selection and drift)." First off, most educated atheists will concede nothing can be proven 100%, so we still have to entertain the idea that possibly there is a very minute chance that a god exists. This is the same as saying we cannot prove a teacup isn't orbiting the Sun. Our understanding of facts as we perceive them gives us a pretty good idea that that tea cup doesn't exist, but we cannot prove it to be an absolute. Secondly, evolution is not random. Creationists like to shoot holes in evolutionary theory by trivializing it and suggesting it to be random, as if the human stereo optic eye was randomly created overnight by some accidental natural fluke. Ridiculous.

This Earth has been around for 4.6 billion years, and simple cell organisms began 4 billion years ago. If you think about the process of life changing for 4 billion years (4 billion!), then it's not an impossible timeline for complex changes from light sensitive membranes to the modern eye. Evolution works not randomly but within the specific needs for a species survival. Sometimes genetic changes happen in short periods, such as with early humans in dairy cultures evolving genetically to digest milk during adulthood. Their bodies started producing lactose-digesting enzyme known as lactase. In areas absent of dairy cultures such as China and parts of Africa the adults could not digest the milk.

And, atheists don't have only one source of "knowledge", as you say. They have all sources. They study, test and debate all these sources, and through doing so they cannot base anything in this physical world against the bible. It's irrelevant to science. Christians, in my opinion, tend to be anchored to one source of "knowledge": the bible. They're largely inflexible, whereas science is always flexible. Science wants to be disproved so it can learn why it was wrong. Someone please tell me of a Christian who wants their beliefs to be disproved.

U.S. Government's dirty Little secret about meat

djsunkid says...

This video is garbage. There are some issues with consumer awareness about the effect of CO treated meat, but the bottom line *SHOULD* be that CO treatment actually does extend the shelf life of meat. E Coli growth is slowed, rancidity is slowed, meat actually lasts longer.

If you wanted to talk about fish, then yes- I absolutely agree. The deterioration of fish is due to anaerobic processes within the flesh itself- enzymes breaking down the flesh, etc. CO treatment does nothing good for fish.

But it does actually improve meat's shelf life.

Often times, people will cite Canada as being an example of a country where CO has been banned in meat packaging. I've actually spoken with some of the people that made that happen, and we didn't ban it because it is wrong. We banned it because of "public perception". Which is to say, videos like this one.

Get your facts straight before you make a video like this and distribute it on the interwebs. Shame on the producer. At least the news report that you're using has some facts -- don't try and turn it into a huge government conspiracy.
