Why'd ya give the old guy all the lines? He's unintelligible! (from Ed Wood)

You know, as bad as Uwe is, it is kinda like the Plan 9 From Outer Space phenomenon. Like Ed Wood, his movies are just so bad that they mesmerize. I think I've seen maybe half of the ones mentioned and have always been highly entertained by the level of badness.

I really disliked this film. Terrible storytelling, weak characters, and an over reliance on CGI. It's the George Lucas Phantom Menace syndrome: Give a director a $200,000,000 budget, and they spend all their time figuring out how to spend all that money, rather than focussing on creating a worthwhile piece of art.

Johnny Depp's Mad hatter, whom gets almost as much screen time as the bland lead, consists of drag queen make up and an effeminate voice, which occasionally shifts to a Braveheart brogue. It comes across more as self indulgent mugging from an actor who has received no directorial guidance than any kind of actual insanity.

In Burton's earlier years, when his budgets were a fraction of what they are now, he told truly imaginative stories, with great characters and heartfelt performances. Movies like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and The Nightmare Before Christmas were cinematic masterpieces in my opinion.

The scene above is the precise moment when my disappointment turned to contempt. Issy and I actually turned to each other in the theater to verify that it was not a hallucination. (/disappointed fan-boy rant)

If you are reading this Tim Burton, here's your assignment, should you decide to take it:

Make a film for under 10 million dollars. You are not allowed to use your wife or Johnny Depp as cast members. The script must be original and not an adaptation of some previously existing work. Use models, stop motion, or whatever other effects you like, but keep the CGI to a bare minimum.

Drax! Thank God someone else gets it! That show really was the best! There's a whole series of novels, including what the fifth season was supposed to be. Frigging heart wrenching. Okay, Notarobot. You know how on Star Trek, they encounter some Klingons in some uncharted territory, and the whole episode is really tense, and then they find some key at the last minute, and then everyone goes home and noone dies? That doesn't happen on Bab5. Instead of dink and dunk episode plots, the story arcs take entire seasons to develop, but when they get it on, whole fleets, casualties in the thousands. Body parts and debris floating through space. Entire friggin planets, decimated. In Star Trek, nobody dies. In Bab5, everyone in clinging by their bloody fingernails and the skin of their teeth the whole time.
With the high hair Centauri and the red eye Narn, from what I recall the Narn were an intelligent, but semi developed culture until the Centauri came along, hooked them up with some interstellar technology, gave them the smallpox blankets and slavery treatment, and the whole thing degenerated in to an orgy of slaugher. The guy ol whatshisname (high hair guy in the clip there was the nerd in Animal House) answers to is one of my all time favorite characters in anything: Ambassador Londo Mollari, who is a backstabbing Machivellian scumbag diplomat (who just so happens to have a tiny glimmer of a conscience that utterly rips him to shreds). Crap, one station cancelled it halfway through, and they managed to pick up with another, so the whole time their telling this GENIUS story, they're putting 75% of their effort into just surviving their own executives, so at a glance it's easy to laugh at the hair, and the already Ed Wood looking tech and all, BUT DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU. Rather than either trying to start from season one, or not watching any of it, I suggest watching season 3, (SPOILER HERE!!!) which is civil war with Earth (and Earth's $%&%$^ douchebag dictator), and you'll be hooked well enought not only to sustain all five seasons, but hunt down the novels afterward. Bab 5 is better than the total sum of all Star Treks and Battlestars put together. I love this show and I'm not even into the genre! Bab 5 really is as f-ing awesome as great stories get. (There's even a hot crustacean lady played by the gal who plays Rousseau in Lost). Drax, you posted this? I love you!

I think that Ed Wood was trying to imply an unrelenting urge when he super-imposed the buffalos over Lugosi.

Wood was one of those people who was...just shy on every note.

Yet, he tried. And, he lives.

Vincent D'Onofrio starring in a film biography of Orson Welles would be stellar. He'd have plenty of time to get the voice down this time, or hell, just have LaMarche overdub the whole thing!

Maurice LaMarche, who does the voice of Brain, also got to do the voice of Orson Welles in Tim Burton's Ed Wood. Orson Welles is played by Vincent D'Onofrio in that film, but Burton wasn't happy with his voice so he got LaMarche to dub it with his Brain/Welles voice.

Will I be the only Japanophile???!! Commercials in english suck! And musicals must suck to for all the FAGOTTY Hollywood directors can't rub 2 braincells between their dicks to make, what??! Chicago??! FUUUUCK. At least Martin Landau won an oscar for Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood-Go with yer gut.
