Yeah, I got really sucked into the series a while back, and eventually got the box sets. I still watch them from time to time. Both him and the guy who played the doctor -- Steven (can't remember his characters last name) have passed on. I think he mentions his father being strung up on a tree in some other episode as well.

I didn't know Katsulas passed either! Sorry to hear that. If I just took a glance at Bab 5 without ever having gotten into it, I would've missed out on some amazing heart and soul.
