Why Australia should reject Gay Marriage

noims says...

a) I wonder how many people decided whether or not to watch a video with this title based on their current beliefs.

b) Imagine a dystopian future in which bigots are so discriminated against, they're not even allowed to marry other bigots for fear of raising bigot children. Wouldn't that be unfair.

c) I'm so smug that I upvoted this. Smuggety smug smug. Yeah, but at least it's better than being a cunt. To use the vernacular.

Kurzgesagt - CRISPR Genetic Engineering Changes Everything

Don't Stay In School

Jinx says...

Nobody knows that want to be an x or y when they are 11. It's easy to look back in hindsight and say "I never needed to know quadratics", but maths is absolutely critical to a vast number of academic areas and skilled trades. How do you give everybody the opportunity to become, idk, an engineer, without a lot of what you teach becoming more or less useless to most others. It has to be a broad curriculum which narrows as you progress because either you have to allow kids to make decisions about their futures for which they really lack the experience or knowledge to make, or you are allowing schools to effectively close off career paths for their students which is fucking dystopian because they'll just do whatever maximises their success rates.

For the things Dave wishes he was taught...well some of them are actually offered as subjects in some schools e.g. Economics. For the others, well, I work in Adult Education and we do actually do a lot of the things school misses. For example, we have courses for single parents (particularly young/teenage mums) on how to budget effectively etc, all funded 100% by the tax payer. It's an area that actually survived the latest budget and that we've been asked by Ofsted to expand, so, you know, it's not completely ignored, its just not really delivered by schools.

Fury Road Guitar and cars

shagen454 says...

I liked it but the whole film needed more Max (dystopian, low on water, low on oil, low on order, seemingly endless wasteland)... less McMarvel (smooth scene stitching, endless action). I mean all the cars are in pretty good order because there is order in the wasteland this time around

Police have no CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY to protect YOU!

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Hah, "had it coming"?

Do you jerks consult with Jesus and the Grim Reaper before murdering unarmed, no-threatening citizens?

The worst type of person is the type that can't admit when they are WRONG.

Have you ever seen the movie Judge Dredd? You would LOVE that movie.

"Joseph Dredd is an American law enforcement officer in the dystopian future city of Mega-City One.

He is a "street judge", empowered to summarily arrest, convict, sentence, and execute criminals."

yeah...none of those people had it coming...just cops randomly choosing people, mostly based on their skin color...

dude, what size blinders are you wearing?

A Power Rangers for the rest of us (rated R version)

poolcleaner says...

The reason we live in dystopian future... today... Excellent fan video released on the internet, stirs up a reinterest in a shitty old intellectual property, people who profit from this buzzes response? Take the video away from the masses. F U, aholes.

I just... I get it, but it doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel like the internet I voted for! lol

A Mini Cooper being made

SwimWithSharks says...

we'll see what happens once most jobs are 'efficiency-ed-out', unlike in the industrial revolution now you're not just seeing mechanization becoming faster at specific tasks, robotization is becoming more and more flexible, which means that as it goes on more and more broad categories of jobs will go by the wayside.

Just think of when in the endless quest for profit the moment it becomes more cost effective to switch to, say, self-driving delivery trucks and entirely automated fast food, how many millions of people will that put out of work? and what are they going to do?

I don't blindly subscribe to dystopian scenarios, but I also don't blindly subscribe to platitudes like "horse buggy whip factories disappeared and we were just fine", this is something we need to address as a society somehow (via basic income maybe, or some other way)

necessary illusions-thought control in democratic societies

A10anis says...

Another rant from the harbinger of doom. I believe his followers gain succour from his dystopian views because it gives them an excuse for the shortcomings in their own lives. OK, that's a bit strong, but the fact is, no matter what figures you want to analyze, never in history have humans been so fortunate both in health and general well being. Generally, each generation lives longer, is better cared for and enjoys a better quality of life than the last. Is it perfect? No. Will it ever be? Probably not. Do we care enough about our third world cousins? Again, probably not.
I never quite "get" what Chomsky's real problem is. Is it Multinationals? Media? Government? Corporations? It seems to be all of these, and a whole lot more. North Korea would be a good place for him to rail against evidential control, injustice and a true dystopian existence. Here we are allowed to take advantage of education, free thought and certain rights. In short, to make the best of things. I suggest he, and his followers, do the same. Moaning on, and on, and on about this awful, oppressive existence we suffer in the west, really gains no sympathy from people who live in places where they would love the chances Chomsky seems to take for granted.

moviebob-why robocop still rules

poolcleaner says...

What Frank Miller's Batman is. What Batman could be. In the movies, Robocop rules!

Anyone here read Frank Miller's RoboCop VS. Terminator?

Long story short, similar idea, everything is f'ed, but this time RoboCop's consciousness is hiding deep within Skynet, waiting for his time to strike. If you like smart but action driven dystopian SciFi, I highly recommend.

You thought correctly. What a blast.

Even despite your recommendation, I expected it to be a run-of-the-mill action flick. Mucho pow pow, cheesy zingers everywhere... the usual. So it was all the more captivating when it turned out to be a proper dystopian cesspool of desperation.

When Dredd lured a group of them to a terminal, covered them in what looked like Willie Pete and set half the quadrant on fire -- that's cold. And if I didn't know Lena Headey to have quite the rock 'n roll personality, I'd be worried by how naturally the persona of an ice-cold murderer seems to come to her. Both Urban and Headey, now that I think about it. Very disturbing indeed.

Anyway, great recommendation, would have never touched it otherwise.
