For newts, it's everything.
Leaf litter, twigs and branches, and downed trees are all imperative for a healthy forest....as is periodic fire in most cases. They are habitat for most forest animals.
They also moderate soil humidity, keeping it from drying out to dust, and return nutrients to the soil for plants to utilize.

Few forests could survive being raked clean, none would remain healthy.

Also, I think you're conflating the particles age with the stone's age. There are almost zero stones that old on earth, most has been dissolved and reconstituted a few times over by now, with new (and new old) dust added constantly from space.

I think the value was in the insane impossible to recreate pattern, something the universe manufactured on it's own timeframe for it's own reasons.

WTF, panzies. Covered by landslide?! That's barely soiled by a bit of mud. Come to Humboldt, we'll show you landslides, the kind where 1/4 mile of road is gone, along with the entire mountain it was built on. This wouldn't even warrant a road crew, somebody would shovel that dust pile off the road within an hour up here.
