No More Drugs For You.

Sketch says...

Yeah, doesn't necessarily look like an ecstacy high to me. Could be anything, really.

Also, not a rave, unless that's some drum and bass version of that song (the name of it and the band allude me at the moment) that I haven't heard, which is possible, but it sounds like it's their concert.

Sorry to nitpick. Just don't care for misleading assumptions.

Well, I don't have an MP3 player, so I just loaded up my entire collection in winamp and hit randomize playlist. Here's what I came up with:

1. Beatsystem - Endlessly Downward

This is exactly what it sounds like. It is a 3 minute track of a repeating loop of tones that sound like they are going downward, endlessly. It is kind of a auditory version of barbershop pole.

2. Transwave - The Rezwalker (London Live Remix)

The first of several classic goa trance tracks that ended up here. I do have a fair collection of old goa on here, I suppose, but they are unfairly represented in this list, which is just fine. I love this music.

3. Finski Disco - Speaking in Lungs

Now this is really really weird stuff. Finland psytrance is some of the most interesting music I've heard in years.

4. Acrid Abeyance - 303 Delight

Classic, screaming, hard acid techno music. 303 delight, indeed.

5. Pleiadians - Alcyone

Another classic goa track. Alcyone is the name of a star in the pleadian star cluster.

6. Cause 4 Concern - Research

Drum and bass.

7. St. Germain - Montego Bay Spleen

This is the closest thing to an embarassment on my list. OK, it's almost mainstream jazzy house music. It's cool though.

8. Chris Watson - Adult Cheetah resting by the Baobob tree.

An actual recording of a Cheetah, purring as it rests by a tree. If you turn it up loud, it sounds crazy- almost like you're in a cheetah's mouth!

9. Shpongle - Periscopes of Consciousness
10. Infected Mushroom - Semi Nice

These should be self-explanatory.

Wow, did I ever luck in. What a great list!

Jake here, 27 this week, Pennsylvania.
working on my Ph.D. in Genetics studying Herpes Simplex Virus 1. About two years to go, then post-doc work, then hopefully teaching at a small college or working for the CDC in the field/over-seas. No ropes tying me down right now except my will to finish this whole grad school thing.

I like WoW and some other games. Just bought and finished Portal in the last 2 hours and loved it. I tend to read Sci-Fi and Fantasy mostly... other-worldly stuff, escapism in other words. (Currently reading: The Chronicles of Amber, The song of Albion, Paradise Lost, Why I am a Christian, Romans.) I LOVE scrabble and play it online regularly. http://www.isc.ro/ I like fishing/golfing/martial arts/

Play piano and sax, learning guitar. Played in or directed 6 jazz bands, 1 jazz quartet, 2 concert bands, 1 marching band, 3 contemporary church bands, 1 dixieland band, 1 pit orchestra, 1 stage orchestra, 2 ska bands, and an assortment of short-lived, one-time other this and that. DJed trance, drum'n'bass, and deep house for number of years in college. Produced some trance and Drum'n'bass

I get one social night a week most weeks and I go to a local pub/restaurant Wednesday night with a group of good friends for "trivia night." We almost always win. Our trivia guy is obsessed with the Peanuts cartoons.

I'm moderate, conservative, libertarian. I think right wingers are too afraid of change...and a tad too cold and impractical. I think left wingers are more DEgressive than they are PROgressive...and a tad too whiny and naive. I think our government is far too large, too nosey, too expensive, and should declassify about 90% of all that crap they have stored away in some salt mine somewhere. Also, Block Votes are bullshit.

I'm Christian...made the real choice in college. I'm not Catholic, but I don't think they're unsaved. I respect Judaism and Israel most of the time. I respect my Islamic friends, but not radical, imperialistic clerics and their followers. I have Buddhist and Hindu friends as well, but they hardly practice.

I chose this new avatar because I spend 90% of my waking hours around academics and "thinkers" who don't do much else in life and really don't get out enough.

Final thought: The internet needs a new meme STAT.

"you can easily avoid overdoing it without being THAT simple on the drums."

Heh, yeah. I thought you were going to come back with, "but Meg totally draws attention to herself with her hot-librarian looks and her sloptastic, follow-along drumming, which is different from every other rock band and therefor stands out," which is also probably a fair things to say. I'm biased, and used to their 'untrained' sound, so... yeah. If Jack had a better drummer they'd be The Black Keys, so, I guess we got that covered already.

In reply to this comment by JAPR:
Haha, yeah I actaully watched that cover after reading your comment on it. I'm not a drummer myself, but I totally agree with instruments not drawing away from the music by sticking out too much. I think that there's a time for each instrument to stick out. Drums and bass guitar don't really get a lot of time in the spotlight, but they get a unique opportunity to create an extra layer of interest. My favorite drummers and bassists use their technical skills where it adds to the texture of the music to make it better. I guess my point is you can easily avoid overdoing it without being THAT simple on the drums.

Pendulum is one of the last "drum and bass" electronic band around. They work a lot with Prodigy, whom you probably are more familiar with. It is titled Slam from their cd "hold your colour". Pretty good album, worth getting it.

DUBSTEP

MINK says...

your first sentence was beautifully circular!!!

more technological innovation? wtf? have you heard it in a proper club with a proper sound system? omfg.

I think the biggest problem with dubstep is it is totally dependent on the sound system, the venue, the lighting and the people inside it. It is very very sensitive and hard to get right. If you've been to a bad dubstep party or heard it on an iPod or a crappy club sound system, I understand your reaction.

I remember a couple years back many people thought drum and bass was "too fast" and therefore they didn't like it. Now they go to dnb parties and say dubstep is "too slow" lol.

MINK says...

btw... if you are a dj, you can't "turn up the volume" because you are probably playing at the loudest possible setting, and the club control the amps.

so that's why we compress drum and bass. it sounds better.

if all music sounded like the music in this video i would have to drown myself.
