I moved down to the border into the mountainous sonoran desert in Arizona and have definitely heard that there's been an up-spike of deportation & border patrol goons since the election....

As ironic as it may be to say this, I think that the Republican Congress will be a strong bulwark against Trump's more nationalistic impulses if it turns out he actually wants to act on them and they weren't just part of demagogic campaigning.

If for no other reason that they know demographics are against them in the longer term. They may have won the election on the electoral college but lost the popular vote - even with all the attempts at voter suppression. In the longer term, winning with their party base becomes harder and harder.

They know if Trump enacts genuine deportation measures against Latinos then the frankly astounding 1/3 of voting Latinos that supported Trump will turn sharply against the Republican party. That group represents the fastest growing demographic in America and they can't afford to lose them for a generation.

In contrast, they will be also act a constraint against any of his ideas on infrastructure spending, congressional term limits or curbing trade. Since it's already clear he's filling his cabinet with establishment Republicans and he has little knowledge of policy, he will likely acquiesce to their suggestions for lack of any other policy advice.

It's a bit harder to "not think about politics" when you're being deported just because of your religion or ethnicity.

It's harder to "enjoy life" when you're a woman who's being denied an abortion.

And it'll be fucking difficult to ignore all this bullshit when climate change burns the world in a few decades (years?).

In general, there's a pretty friendly rivalry between the two countries, mostly around sport (we beat them at rugby, they beat us at cricket).

But the countries are actually politically and culturally pretty close, and there's a real sense of comradeship in relation to shared military history (see ANZACs).

All that said, there are some genuine issues of contention, especially right now. The two countries both allow citizens of the other to live and work there. Given that Australia is the larger economy, this mostly means kiwis going to Aussie looking for work.

So there is a perception among some Australians that Kiwis are somehow both stealing their jobs and also lazy dole bludgers (hey, no one said bigots had to be internally consistent).

In fact, this is completely the opposite of reality. Australians who come to NZ are basically NZ citizens in all but name. They are entitled to unemplyoment benefit, whereas Kiwis in Australia do not have the same benefits.

There is also currently an issue around detention and deportation of Kiwis, where Kiwis in Australia (many of whom have lived most of their lives in Australia) who have been committed of crimes are being deported back to NZ after completing their sentences. This often means they are held in refugee-style detention centres while awaiting deportation and are being sent back to a country away from their families.

In this specific instance, I'm guessing it's because the kid in the video is of Maori or Polynesian descent.

Disclaimer: I'm an Irish guy living in NZ who spent two years in Sydney, so this is a slightly outsider take.

They should revoke his passport. he obviously has zero respect for other cultures, their artifacts, or their laws.
I'm with @eric3579, he should have spent a month in jail, been fined, and THEN been deported...permanently...and I'll go farther and say he should be put on a list of people who desecrate international heritage sites and never allowed to travel again.

Tourist who think they can go into others countries and knowingly break the law should be charged, jailed or fined then deported. It annoys me they didn't charge him. Nothing bothered me more when i was traveling then tourists who though they were special and expected to be treated as such.

Perhaps if those Jews were still in Europe fighting against the Nazis, they wouldn't have made it out of Germany. The fact that they all immigrated to one place and stayed there makes it an invasion, not refugees fleeing to their neighbors for safety. If all Syrians rushed to, lets say only Denmark, displacing the inhabitants, replaced the government and army, and started deporting Danes and settling in Finland, I'll be right there calling them invaders. It's not the same thing by far. The Jews were not fleeing anything but fear in the 30s, the Syrians are fleeing certain death.
AND...the Jews were certainly allowed to immigrate just like anyone else. I don't know where you get this idea that they were persona non gratta, during the war German Jews were under stricter immigration rules, yes, but immigration being strictly illegal, not according to my education or research....unless you mean since EVERY Jew couldn't immigrate it was illegal for those that didn't pass inspection or came too late and missed the cutoff....but that applied to EVERYONE not just Jews, so no.

I think many Romani are no longer nomadic because you can't just move across international borders without papers, and they historically refuse to do government paperwork, get IDs, pay taxes, etc. That's also why many were deported, they refused to live by the rules of the countries they were living in. Especially in todays climate, refusing to have a verifiable identity is considered unacceptable in many countries. This should surprise no one.

Extremely one sided "explanation". His view is pretty much the same as an extreme right winger, just from the opposite direction.

He says that people say that immigrants and refugees is the same in this crisis. The thing is for some countries it is. If they are in that country, even if they are not accepted as immigrants, they are allowed to stay. Look at Germany for example. Only EXTREMELY few people get deported from there. Period. If youre lucky enough to get into Germany, you will most likely stay there.

He also says that most people arriving in Europe are refugees. Thats also bullshit. Only about a third are refugees from unstable countries. Thanks to speeches like that of Merkel and her politics people are streaming into Europe in hope for a better life, because everyone expects the land of milk and honey.
The fact of the matter is that nobody would care much if it all were refugees, who will be there only temporary.

He also puts most blame on Assad and Iran and Russia, blah blah. He even puts the chemical attack on Assad, even though NOTHING has been proven and actually point more towards the extremists incl. ISIS. The USA, UK and France started that war by supporting those extremists from day one and even before that! The country was stable before that! Same mistake like in Iraq and Libya! I'm trying to picture a scenario where someone who is homeless or on unemployment or public assistance has been coveting some of the jobs that might be freed up if there was a mass deportation.
