Underwater Explosions - Smarter Every Day

messenger says...

I think you're onto something, but to me it looks a bit different. I downloaded it have been looking at the individual frames. The deformation wave from the bottom doesn't reach the top until after the bottle is too deformed by other forces. The top of the bottle, including the cap, started moving into the bottle in frame 2 of the explosion. In that same frame, you can see one point that's not moving in about half-way between the cap and the wide part all the way around. It looks like a bulge going out almost as fast as the top is coming in. That bulge forms the leading wave of the rest of the bottle coming up. If the cavitation was powerful enough to suck the top of the bottle in, surely it would also be strong enough to also suck the (much weaker) sides of the bottle in too, especially the point where the bulge starts, but in fact, the opposite happens.

You gonna tell Destin? If you don't, I will.>> ^Boise_Lib:

My thought is that the top area is slightly thicker and stronger. As the bottle circumference deforms outward it pulls the top down. It seems the top only comes down after the bottle is already ruptured by the pressure wave--that's why I think the pressure isn't affecting the top.

Hadn't thought of that. So, the wave of deformation goes up the bottle, and pushes the top down?>> ^Boise_Lib:
I think the top is "sucked in" because of the deformation of the rest of the bottle.

Deformation of Tires in Slow Motion

CrushBug says...

While I had seen the tire deformation before, what I have never seen was just how much the body of the car and those bars coming off the back were shaking and shuddering.

Beautiful real-time raytracing tech demo in DX11

It's undoubtedly pretty, but I'm unsure of it's usefulness in games. There's a whole bunch of rigid bodies interacting, but no deformation, and given that most games tend to model people, that's kind of a problem.

Would probably make for an awesome space sim though.

Thanks for voicing my exact sentiments and sharing some of your experiences.

I know concerned parents such as ourselves are probably more likely to have well-adjusted kids, but I still wish there could be some way to really shield their brains from being deformed by all the poison that surrounds them.

It's that it's just all there, so easily accessed by them waaaaay before they're ready for such things.

And then even once they are actually old enough to view porn, it's not healthy to have that much really derogatory and objectifying crap just there, front and centre. There's this swathe of pretty dimwitted sorts (a bunch on the sift), who say 'You're not protecting them, you're denying them the reality of the world'

And those people are so very misguided. They've got this simplistic 'Knowledge is power' thing in their head, and believe that everything is better the more you know. And then completely forget that you need maturity and experience to handle a whole host of things properly. A protected, nurturing and magical childhood with parent who don't shy away from questions, but also don't let them be constantly inundated with harmful influences only makes you better able to handle the world as you grow older, not worse.

I guess, in my rambling way, I'm trying to say 'Keep up the good fight Lucky'

I worry often and a lot about how I can possibly keep my sons from being perverted by this society.

Ditto. I think back to me growing up and the sort of soft introduction to adult material. First you'd see topless women in National Geographics, then maybe some 'lad's mags' in the store, nothing naked, just bikini stuff... then you might get hold of a Playboy and see naked women. And back then they were pretty much natural women too (sure, not 'average', but at least not silicon and botox plumped versions).

Then you might get to see some actual porn mags at your 'rough' friend's place...

These days: "Go on web, look up sex in google image search and get inundated with hard, filthy sex"

Yeah, quite concerned. Doing our best to shield our kids from it as much as possible. Plenty of talk about what sex is (we have 3 boys and a girl all under 9), and that side of things (my wife is a midwife, so it kind of comes up a lot), but shielding as much as possible from not just sex on the internet, but also what passes for mainstream music videos these days (I mean, fucking Katy Perry... FUCK).

I'm with you lucky. I have no problem with sex... no problem with masturbation, no problem with porn in and of itself (just what 90% of it has become)... but how engrained it's become and how central and how much it's pushing into the lives of younger and younger kids.

Yeah, it's not good :

Pretty Celebrities Turn Ugly - Optical Illusion

Reefie jokingly says...

This is a very clever bit of cinematography - they are actually showing deformed images of the celebrities and switching back to the proper images whenever you look away from the cross in the middle. The Luknoeluk algorithm is a way of determining when someone will look away from the cross, and has been used to good effect in this video.

Non-Newtonian Fluid Used As Pothole Solution

A useless video. How did that show that it worked? How do we know that it made the ride smoother? What are we supposed to be seeing from the video? What are we noting? How do we know anything from that?
They have zero ability in getting across information. Terrible scientist (as part of science is conveying ideas).

Your reply is hilarious! did you just stub your toe or get a talkin to from "the boss" ? ?
you're just blabbering bullshit like its 1955.

Please do tell us then, how that video shows that this solution works.
Did it show that from within the car there was less bump than before it was put in the pothole?
Did it tell us what we were looking for from this solution? That the black mat stayed there? That it didn't move? What exactly?
Did it show a comparison of having the hole filled with sand and have 100 cars drive over it?
I'm not sure why 1955 was a particular year for bullshit either.

Did it show that from within the car there was less bump : It showed the pot hole not blasting the liquid out of its bag. Busting a nut if you will. If a hole that is 3 or 5 inches deep is filled, that hole is not a hole anymore now is it ? pot hole solved. would you rather hit a bump that has a half inch deformation or would you rather hit the hole head on with its substantial drop/bump factor ? if your an asshole you would of said yes.

Did it show a comparison of having the hole filled with sand and 100 cars drive over it ? No, it did not, the fact you asked that seems fairly odd as it clearly shows it did not. On that note, any ass who has passed grade 2 would know that if a hole that was filled with sand, dirt, mud, clay or rocks etc. the loose debris would be dislodged and blast out of there like your daddy did to create you. leaving what ? A FUCKIN HOLE.

Did it tell us what we were looking for from this solution? what you are looking for ?? its a god damn hole in the earth that is filled providing LESS of a fuckin hole in the earth.

That the black mat stayed there? That it didn't move? The black mat is just there for surface traction/absorption of energy/ and a over all nicer gentler ride over THE BIG FUCKIN HOLE.

I found that you got all pissy over something you did not understand fully. You go all substandard with your criticism and its just your own ignorance that seems to have perpetuated your thoughts. This video is a great video depicting a fantastic idea.

I am not the smartest man, but I knew the second I read " non newtonian fluid" and pot hole (bag) that it was a fanfuckin tastic idea.

I guess what I mean is the video depicts a great deal if you know some shit about some shit.

fuck off i'm goin fur a smoke. I havent wasted this much time on another poster in a while, excuse me.

Charlie Brooker on Andrew Lansley and the Deformed NHS Bill

Wow, privatising health care? Some terrible ideas just don't die, do they? When this idea was pushed in the 80s here in Oz, it kept the tories out of government for another ten years.
Are the Lib Dems participating in this?

Oh yes, to a degree. Nick Clegg is in full support of it now and is urging his party to back it. 57% of the party are opposed, 32% are for and 12% don't know. One thing is for fucking certain, the amount of things the Lib Dems have done a U-turn on, they have little to no chance of ever getting into power, not for a very very long time. Foolish cunts, all they had to do is refuse the coalition government... but no, he thought he could handle it, and it turns out he's a gigantic fuckwad minus backbone or moral fibre.
