Authoritarianism: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

drradon says...

Sounds a bit like the left: inciting paranoia against the business community; against the scientific establishment that dares to not support hand-wringing about trivial threats; and demonizing all who don't share their universal oppressed victimhood mentality...

White House revokes CNN reporters press pass

mentality says...

Yeah seriously, how dare he provoke the president by asking questions that Trump doesn't want to answer. CNN should go to North Korea and learn how to properly respect the president - you should only ask positive things about our Great Leader! If Fox News can tout the official party line, why can't every one else?

Them democrats caring about such silly things like a free press - how childish!

Briguy1960 said:

Acosta knew damn well he was on this ice yet provoked this response.
That's right.
Provoked.
I agree with what you said about this backward moving government in many areas but the office of the president still needs to be respected.
As you said the childish antics of the Democrats aren't helping.
We need a mature opposition not outlandish behaviour.

Woman Tries To Block access to Apartment

newtboy says...

Yes, and imo any reasonable person would have done exactly that instead of intentionally causing an incident he could film and maybe profit from, or at least get some world star views.

She's married to a black dude, so I'll go out on a limb and say she isn't afraid of black men more than other men.

Of course, there's the possibility that she's actually a captive of her husband, forced against her will to marry and live with someone she feared and didn't respect because of their skin color just to torture her because she's really a racist bitch, but I seriously doubt it.

If the answer is yes, she's done this before to white guys they just didn't film it to publicly shame her and instead just used their fob again like a reasonable neighbor, would you change your position?

No, he has no obligation beyond the building's written rules to engage her at all, but that's exactly why she was suspicious, he violated building rules and stupidly refused to be reasonable....whatever his reason might have been, likely a mistaken assumption she was racially motivated and not just a good neighbor looking out for the safety of her building as the management had repeatedly requested everyone living there do.

What do you think he would do if a few 6'6" skinheads barged in when he opened the door, shoved past him, and rudely refused to prove they belonged there while filming him, snidely commenting about the dumb black boy who thinks he's security? Would you then excuse the hundreds of death threats he started getting from random racists for daring to confront white men? I hope not.

ChaosEngine said:

On one hand, he could have easily defused the situation by backing off, waiting a second and using his key fob.

But on the other hand, why should he? Maybe's he's an attention seeker, or maybe he's just sick of constant low-level racism and decided "fuck it, I'm not putting up with this bullshit today."

Let's be honest, would she have confronted him if he wasn't a black dude? Does she apply this rigorous security policy to everyone? Also, he has no obligation to tell her what apartment he lives in.

It's only a nacho, innit?

Syria: the horror of Homs, a city at war

StukaFox says...

Bob,

This is one place where you and I agree on something: Obama fucked up in Syria and fucked up bad. He should have never said that line about the "red line" on chemical attacks unless he was fully willing to back it with US forces and see it all the way through. All he did there was make the US look weak and embolden Assad.

Now we've got a world-class cluster-fuck over there.

Bismark supposedly foresaw WW1 with the statement about "some damned fool thing in the Balkans", well WW3 might start with "some damned fool thing in the Levant", especially given that you've got Iran, Russia, the Kurds and Turkey -- not to mention al Qaeda and ISIS -- all pursuing their interests in the region through Syria.

Right now, Israel and Russia are sabre rattling at each other over those S-300 missiles and each side is all but daring the other to try something.

The best case scenario is a total bloodbath in Idlib and the worst is a shooting war between nuclear-armed opponents. As the old saying goes, "This can only end well".

What's Going On?

This story, believe it or not, is the very familiar fable of Little Red Riding Hood. This curious version was written in 1940 by a professor of French named H. L. Chace, who wanted to show his students that intonation - that is, the melody of a language - is an integral part of its meaning. The words here are all common English words, but not the ones you'd expect to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Shift in Economic data since Trump Election

newtboy says...

No. No I absolutely don't.

I cannot admire being faithful to the unfaithful, loyal to the disloyal, or offering up your devotion to the devotion-less, just as I can't admire trusting the untrustworthy, believing the unbelievable, and excusing the inexcuseable. Putting on blinders and accepting anything your guy/side tells you and NEVER fact checking those people you admit are professional consummate liars while with zero contradictory evidence, zealously contradicting those who dare to display professional levels of honesty and care in their words is not something to admire.

Water seeks it's own level, eh? Is that why Republicans are still diving deep into the swamp with the creature from the orange lagoon even as they watch him eat all those who went before them?

Regardless of his beliefs, you have to admire his faithfulness, loyalty and devotion no matter where it leads him. Water seeks its' own level.

According to Sharp, the incident resulted in the man suffering 'several broken bones.'

As Sharp explained, the man promised 'to make good on it.'

Science Moms

navlasop says...

I agree that the GMO hysteria is way overblown, and the science on it causing any ill effects are nill. Tough non-GMO supporters tend to say that there's no long enough studies.

True enough, if you want a lifetime study you'll have to wait a great deal longer, since GMO foods only went commercial in 1994, tough i'm sure the studies were going on for ages before that.

In any case, what concerns me is the patent of crops, and while today as far as i know, the strain is patented for 20 years (atleast in the US) After that they become public domain as far as its makeup\modification is concerned. Fair enough.

The only issue i fear (which is not logical ), is that if\when GMO's become the "norm", and non modified crops are basically not grown anywhere, the rulebook goes out the window, some politicians gets alot richer, and the corporations now own all the plants\seeds. Forever.

I know it's extremely unlikely, but i dare anyone not to nod and think "yep, corporations would do that in a second if they could get away with it".

Mr. Rogers subtle battle against racism

RFlagg says...

Probably all the more reason Fox and Friends called Mr Rogers an "evil evil man". Sure their stated reason is because he told children they were special just as they are... the shame of uplifting children apparently and not telling they'll only be special if they work hard and become rich and powerful. But I'm sure his patience and kindness to all people, was a great affront to their mentality, and the mentality of all their ilk. How dare he suggest people be decent to one another.
