It seems like a more likely explanation than "racism" is HBD (human bio-diversity).

Far fewer Asian male / White female pairings are expected merely based on that the bell curve of heights for Whites is farther to the right than the bell curve of heights for Asians.


In other words, in 500 years, regardless of how much politically correct self-flagellating has occurred, the ratio of Asian male / White female pairings will not have increased, because the HBD bell curves will have stayed the same.

Many ethnic patterns will only change once we start editing our babies' genomes in a few decades. Then wait 30 years for those babies to reach age 30. Liberals and Conservatives will both oppose it for the first 50 years, and then will support it afterwards.

Well, I don't believe people have a soul, and miraculously, I've made it almost 36 years so far with an acceptable level of murder (i.e. none). Not that I haven't wanted to kill some people at times, but there's that whole annoying morality thing that I developed for myself.

That said, here's an interesting point. I don't have a problem gunning down hordes of beautifully rendered avatars because they have no sentience.

But what happens when that changes? At what point on the AI curve is it no longer acceptable to drop entities into a virtual world to experience fear and be slaughtered?

Iain M. Banks called it the simulation problem. Let's say you have a noble goal: you want to determine what economic methodologies will produce the best outcome for your citizens. So you develop a model of the countries economy, and in order to simulate it as accurately as possible you make each citizen an intelligent agent with needs, fears, desires, etc. You then subject them to a few million iterations with everything from fascism to communism and all stops in between. Right now? not a big deal. But in the future as computing power grows exponentially, the possibility of modelling those citizens as self ware becomes greater.

I don't mind killing a realistic avatar for fun. I wouldn't even mind if I knew that that avatar was controlled by a human doing the same. But I'd have a real problem killing an AI that could think and feel.

Good fun but not exactly a fair test since a Skyline is built for the curves, and dumping the clutch in one for a good launch will damage the transmission (so I'm sure they didn't do that.) Still that's one hell of a mobility scooter.

Whoa, whoa, whoa -- 20 seconds in and my mind is already blown... Only 93% of all human beings ever are currently dead? Think about how many generations of homo sapiens there have been, and consider that at any one time an individual is pretty lucky if they themself + generations of offspring currently living + generations of ancestors currently living is greater than or equal to 4.

Considering all that plus the 93% figure from this video, I have come to the conclusion that the only explanation is that we've gotten into the real business end of an exponential population growth curve and are currently massively, desperately overpopulated.

I was thinking the same. They never showed it running at full speed! I saw another newer documentary bout this same telescope and you couldn't tell it was liquid under normal operating conditions. it looked like a curved piece of mylar.

I don't know why they don't just spin molten tin and pour glass to float over it. Then pour molten tin on top while still spinning to cover the top curve. That's sort of how they make flat glass at window factories. Then silver it with vapor deposition.

My favorite MOVIE this year was "The Intouchables", hands down. Only the French can come up with such a captivating story.

As for GAMES, well, since I have played just two AAA titles this year, my favorite has to be an indie game, unsurprisingly. "FTL: Faster Than Light" was a blast. Perma death rarely works in favour of a game, but in this case, it became the foundation of the thrill FTL provides.
"Deadlight" was also fun, very stylish, but not extraordinary. And "X Rebirth" was postponed once again, so it'll be my game of the year 2013 instead.

TV was just the same ol', MUSIC as well.

BOOKS is a hard one. Or maybe not. A cursory check of my collection tells me I haven't read a single book that was published this year.
