TYT: First Amendment 'Too Expensive' - Fox News

shinyblurry says...

No, that was my own assessment of the movement, and it seems to have borne out. What is the OWS movement doing today beyond vandalism and petty thuggery?

Yes, there were some good points made, and a whole lot of bad ones as well. They spoke as one cacophony and it is that lack of coherency or cohesive strategy (as well as a terrible image problem) that ultimately led to their downfall. Even the founders of the movement agree:

"But even Adbusters, the 'culture-jamming' magazine that help spawn the original Wall Street occupation, says that things have changed dramatically for the movement. "Our movement is living through a painful rebirth..." began its frontpage essay this week, and then quoted a Zuccoti park regular who declared, "We are facing a nauseating poverty of ideas.”"

It's a trend that probably already started when TV first started making live reports in the streets and had difficulty clearing the background.

Another example of "live TV interruption", a culture jamming technique

There probably are other/more specific terms to describe this phenomenon..

I'd like to see this become a trend. The first step in making this a trend is coining up with a concise, quirky and appealing term for it - probably something ending in -ing. Any Ideas?

That Dark channel sounds interesting. So do the other ones too. Thoughts on each:

An Independent channel would be really great. If that's what you really want then go for it. No offense to Sarzy or blankfist, but if that's your first choice and you get there before them, then do what YOU want.

A Weird channel would be great, but I foresee many people mixing that up with WTF.

Trippy channel kind of exists already, in that I've seen a few people post trippy shit in the Spacy channel. However I think Spacy should be strictly devoted to aerospace, while Trippy could be devoted to unapologetic drug use.

Odds and Ends might be too narrow. Most of the channels already cover almost everything under the sun, so a channel like that might also be a duplicate of WTF unless it's strictly defined. Might be more trouble than what it's worth.

Dude, don't you get up early? Aren't you burning the candle at both ends? Get to bed. The night belongs to insomniacs like me.

Yeah, I have a few ideas. I'm probably going to float them in a sift talk to and see what the consensus is.

Independent Art or Short Film or Independent Film Channel - Dedicated to short films, student films, indie films etc. Not sure if I should include other types of independent art. If not, I'm not sure if I should limit it to complete films, or even limit it to short films. This would actually be a great channel for BlankFist or Sarzy to run. If they're interested, I'll pull this one off the table.

Weird Channel: When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. Featuring all things strange and avant gard.

Dark Channel: All things dark. I could possibly combine this with the weird channel, but it seems like it deserves it's own channel.

Trippy Channel: Better Sifting Through Chemistry

Culture Jam/Anti Channel: For fighting the power, corporations, media, advertising, government and any other institution.

Odds and Ends: A Channel for videos that fall through the cracks.

Issy isn't sure what she wants to do. I suggested a Happy Channel

I agree Distopian, great culture jam, and they are actaully kind of funny. Bill-o and the other dude can really bitch and moan all they want, becuase its only the grumpy elderly that watch his show. And I bet most of them prefer the days of pre-Civil Rights.

No CaptainPlanet, this is in Toronto, where it's not considered inherently funny to see culture jams like in the video. It's a very international city.

Agree with choggie. This is probably the coolest thing I've seen today. It reminds me of these horrible horrible signs around Halifax that somebody decided to draw on in chalk- THIS SIGN IS UGLY

Well done! This is fantastic culture jamming.
