Q3 has no strangelove mod nor "giant maps", and I'm not sure if it's even possible to make either of them in Q3. Back when I played Q3 there weren't a lot of mod servers and they didn't have very creative mods. Although quake 3 had resource downloading, the interface for it sucked and was slower. UT had better music and way more user-created maps.

Let me count the ways that UT was superior to Q3:
1. The server browser was a million times better.
2. More mods
3. Better mods
4. More maps
5. Better maps
6. Better music
7. Better graphics
8. The options menus were a million times better. They had a real GUI instead of stone-age duke nukem 3D style menus.

I'd argue some of your "points" but most of them are irrelevant to the discussion of what sort of impact these two games had on the genre.
Your arguments are something of a reflection of UT gameplay itself, actually. You're just throwing all your thoughts in a giant pile without properly developing any of them.
Q3 was a more focused, more polished, more skill-based game and that's why I preferred it to UT's everything-to-everyone approach. Neither of them brought much to the table in terms of shaping the genre which is why I feel neither of them should be in this video.
Tribes is the definitive FPS of the late 90s, even if it never approached the popularity of these two. Every team multiplayer game since then has followed the formula that Tribes created when it comes to game types. Unfortunately, nobody has replicated the jetpack, high-mobility, massive maps, and the most skill-based weapon set I can think of.

There is no such thing as a "non-skill-based" weapon set. And there are a few CSS/TF2 servers running massive maps with jetpack mods.

They forgot CSS, TF2, L4D, L4D2, and the original Call of Duty, which are all way more popular than half the games on that list were at their peak. I guess the emphasis is on eye candy rather than good design.

They should have put the original unreal tournament in there. That came out around the same time as Quake 3 but it was waaaaay better.

That depends on what you consider better. I always knew UT as a haven for those who couldn't compete in Q3.
UT has a superior engine, probably, but when I played it I felt like it was just a collection of "cool stuff". Q3 felt like a really fine-tuned game, far more suitable to competitive matches. Everything had a purpose in Q3 or it got cut. UT had every feature any developer ever thought of, even if it served no purpose.

None of that "featuritis" hurt the performance of the software, though. It was very quick and reliable. When you joined a server, it would automatically download all the mod files you needed while showing an accurate and responsive progress bar, using some kind of secure hashing to make sure you got the right file, so it worked every time (unlike CS / CSS / TF2, which often glitch out and lock you out of a server because you don't have the right mod files instead of just re-downloading them from the server, and go unresponsive for many seconds at a time while loading or downloading any map)

Q3's relative lack of modability really cut its replay value.

Have fun with your DRM-encumbered corporate-controlled information.
You will never be able to give or lend a book, movie, video game to a friend. Your kids won't have a bookshelf to peruse. Amazon can take away your ability to access a book that you rented at any time (see the 1984 debacle, as well as the recent thing with erotica).
I just came back from a long trip overseas, and while it would've been nice to not have to lug twenty pounds of books along with me, I would never trade my bookshelves for that convenience. If electronic versions of the books came with the hard copy, that'd be nice.

Circumventing DRM is easy. Also, it's legal to do it for certain fair-use purposes, since the copyright office published more exemptions to the DMCA.

But there's the rub. Alice wants Bob to buy Pirates of the
Caribbean from her. Bob will only buy Pirates of the Caribbean if
he can descramble the CSS-encrypted VOB -- video object -- on his
DVD player. Otherwise, the disc is only useful to Bob as a
drinks-coaster. So Alice has to provide Bob -- the attacker --
with the key, the cipher and the ciphertext.

Hilarity ensues.

There is quite allot of lag , If you play the game on a lan it plays compelaty differently.
allso if you are used to playing games like unreal torniment , cs1.6 css , dod , quake you can instantly see how much lag there is in anny BF game before frost bite ( although bf2 and 2142 were defintly an improvment i think the netcode was still shit they just increased the power of the guns and the shooting speed and this masks lag to an extent thats primarely why Destert combat and project realty both played well as despite the laf it only took 2 shots to kill people)
Just play bf1943 which is bassicaly 1942 in frost bite engin and u can see what i mean , for example you can shoot people that are running harazontaly from you with the sniper all the way across the map , in 1942 it was pritty much imposable to head shot moving people at a long range you would allso shot people standing still and it would not register as a hit.
I just hope they do a game thats more in the spirit of 1942 for pc ( not just the 3 maps u get in 1943) since BF2 they have gone down the road of making the maps allot smaller and having the combat more in your face m where as with 1942 you would have people doign convoys and people having to use vehicals for transport which intraduces allot of game play that you dont find in anny other games on the market , where as basic ground combat is well coverd by other companies.
ALLSO NOTHING BEATS STRAFFING PEOPLE ON THE GROUND IN A PLANE OR HELICOPTER

its a shame that the new BF engin frostbite is not open for mods as they have pritty much fixed all the lag issues.
I used to play , code name egal , Bf2 , BF1942 , DC, Project realty loads . but up untill frost bite unles you were shooting at people in vehicals it was a total lag fest with anny foot combat playing out realy bad litraly shoot people for ages and nothing would happen.
although all the Bf2 ,2142 and 1942 games and mods are gr8 if you have a large lan.
as i say such a shame that frost bite is not open for maps and mods nothing to do with EA wanting to make a load of cash from chargin £4 a map with DLC, Fuck you consoles affecting what were once gr8 pc games.
the whole DLC thing is one place where consoles are realy fucking over pc games.

I don't remember any bad lags when I played. Um, I don't think BF1943 came out for PC/Windows.

Internet Explorer 9 compatibility with Videosift (Sift Talk Post)

Good catch. I'd say wait and see how IE9 final. Not that Microsoft ever listens, but they actually put some ad dollars into Reddit as part of some kind of feedback campaign and (thank Zeus) most of the users are clamoring for better CSS rendering as the top priority.

i would be very interested to use that css you conjured, should you be willing to share. (i know little-to-nothing about css at the moment)

Funny you should mention something like this, because I've been doing it for a while now, for exactly the same reason you state: Bigger embeds (+ an extra vid per row in gallery mode). Basically what I did was write a style that has the sidebar slimmed down to a 4th of its width and have it expand when I mouseover it.

Why hold a tournament of such an old game which nobody really cares about?

There is a huge difference between games that are "fun" and games that are for sport (although game used for sports can allso be fun , and more comon pop games can allso be used for sports)

classic Sport games: are quake 2&3 , starcraft , Rfactor , poker , css ,cs1.6

For a game to be a good sport game they are normaly compleaty focused on the raw mechanics of the game rather than the suger effects and gratificatoin mechanics , games with allot of suger like MW2 , or more arcady stile games often have far less of a skill difrentatoin to them they often have allot of mechanichs that are designed to draw skilled and less skille dplayers together to make them mor eenjoyable to play. as apoosed to a game suted to sports which make no real effort in the games design to flatten and auto balence the play exsperance.

allso allot of it is down to a games history and size of its Core solid user base , u might have games come out that for 8 months that are huge , but the games that are more suted to comps are games that last for 5 + years and have a ver large solid fan base.

when you have a versoin of a game where the core mechanics have stayed the same for 4+ years it can be almost garentied that anny bugs and (unfair imposable to counter) exsploits can be removed and fixed.

Why do some websites style themselves so hyperlinks are invisible? (User Poll by marinara)

xxovercastxx says...

You can edit/create %appdata%\mozilla\firefox\profiles\<random>\chrome\usercontent.css and paste the following into it. It will force an underline on all links on all pages.

a {
text-decoration: underline !important;
}

Or, if you're running the stylish addon, you can create a blank style and paste the following into it.
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

a {
text-decoration: underline !important;
}

The major advantage to the latter is you can easily flip it on and off via the stylish menu.

I'll be your friend, @Tymbrwulf. .

I don't want to have to install all sorts a shite to get rid of the bar; then I might as well set a custom css and redesign the whole fucker while I'm at it. I want the designers to realize the error of their ways and change it for us all. It could be done more elegantly, like with a popin bar from the side or something like that - outside the sift pages (if you have fixed width).

I've had the pleasure as well, Firefox 3.6.6 and 4 (beta 1).
Campy, how do you use that code?

I know of two ways to inject custom css in Firefox. If you already have, or don't mind installing either the GreaseMonkey or Stylish addon, you can go to this page and install the custom style.

If you're wary of installing any new addons, you can locate your FireFox chrome profile folder (Win7: C:\Users\-YourUsername-\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\-YourFFProfile-\chrome) and edit (or create) the userContent.css file and modify it to look like this:

@-moz-document url-prefix(http), url-prefix(file) {

.post-embed object {width: auto !important; height: auto !important;}

}

Zoomed/shifted youtube videos? (Sift Talk Post)

campionidelmondo says...

Apparently some youtube embeds have been posted with inline css values for height and width. These values end up overriding the automatic resize for the outer part of the embed which results in the player being cut off at the bottom. The inline style attribute just has to be removed during embed validation or resize and all will be well

If you don't wanna wait just add this as a custom style to all videosift.com pages:

object {height: auto !important; width: auto !important;}
