Naming Your Child | David Mitchell's Soapbox

I personally can't stand when people think they're being "creative" by changing a letter or two in a name to make it "unique":
Jackson becomes Jaxon
Aden (or Aiden) becomes Caden, Jaden, Maden, Braden, Zaden, Gaden, and so forth...
Courtney becomes Kortny (wtf?)
Wow, so clever AND unique!
The only thing I find worse, is trend naming. I swear there was a period of time when parents only named their kids Austin or Taylor.

It very well may have. I get the feeling facts are like kryptonite to this woman.
Luckily she has no use for them.

What browser do you use when viewing VideoSift? (User Poll by eric3579)
>> ^eric3579:
So i'm computer stupid. Could you fill me in about scripts?
>> ^Crosswords:
I use Firefox with no-script, that occasionally causes problems with playing videos. In use IE on rare occasions, mostly when I have a problem viewing a page with Firefox. If I cant get a page to load properly with IE or FireFox they're doing something wrong.
Biggest problem I run into with no-script is it seems some sites are starting to tie everything into the content you want to actually see, so you end up having to enable just about everything to see a video.
No-script is an addon that basically blocks java and flash programs which are potential sources of viruses and malware.

TDS - Anthony Weiner's Weiner
>> ^Crosswords:
Weiner has never struck me as a stupid man, so it begs the question why would he post something like that on something so public, under his own account. Granted sex has made otherwise smart people do some stupid shit, but as things stand now this looks more like a political hit job than a sex scandal.
Oh wait sorry wasn't following main-stream news logic. OH EMM GEE He didnt immediately call down the gestapo on something he thinks is a prank HE MUST BE HIDING SOMETHING O_O

TEDxCopenhagen - Why We Shouldn't Bike with a Helmet
>> ^DerHasisttot:
>> ^Crosswords:
Um yeah, you know what makes me afraid to ride a bike in my city? Its not the idea of needing a helmet, its seeing the God awful drivers around my city. They have a hard time seeing me and not suddenly pulling into my lane when I'm driving a red 3k pound vehicle. I was in a near miss the other day when the car that had been driving next to me suddenly decided my lane was the one to be in. Our cars got so close I think a gnat that just happened to be between them got squished. So yeah no way in hell I'd ride a bike on the streets of this city. Even where they have bike lanes they've decided to measure about a foot away from the curb and paint a line down the normal street. So bikers have this tiny lane to stick too, and the people in cars, who already have a hard fucking time staying in their own lane, now have less room.
So yeah, I'd wager the rest of the world's cities that aren't so concerned about the danger needing a helmet might produce, and more about the danger of morons driving 2 ton boxes of steel and glass at 50 mph or more and their effect on you if the slam into you.
Are you from the US? If yes, I can understand why you wouldn't wanna ride a bicycle. On different occasions, different US friends of mine noticed independently that there are fewer car accidents in Europe/Germany. Then I researched a bit and found out that US driving tests are far easier than the german tests are; and the US tests are very possibly kept easy to have as many drivers on the roads as possible, influenced by the car and gas-industry.
I would have put it in a slightly different manner (more insults at the driverslicense"agency" what's it called -club) but that's exactly my point.
In Germany you fail the driving test (the actual driving test, not the theory beforehands) if you do one of these things once:
- miss of red light
- entering a one way from the wrong side
- missing a stop-sign
- error of priority in traffic
- ignoring any kind of prohibition sign
- not looking in all mirrors and over shoulder as you switch lines
- no blinking lights as you turn
- blinking lights as you dont turn
- no sign of caution if children, elderly or disabled people are around
- not enough distance to the car in front of you
- and a couple of more things
The test can take up to an hour of driving.
Oh yea the whole thing (driving lessons (theory and driving itself) and tests) costs around a thousand bucks.
If I would feel more save riding a bike here, I would close my eyes, stir with my feet and juggle chainsaws while I enter the AUTOBAHN.
Oh yes and to rejoin the topic: No helmet-campaign I heard of so far. No law against riding without one. Nearly all the children in the city wear one. As they get older they apparently grow out of them.

Sift Shop Contest Ideas? (Sift Talk Post)
@BoneRemake: That's a fun idea. I just wonder how many people would actually participate via photograph. (There's one way to find out.) Though, they wouldn't necessarily have to take a photo of themselves (many folks are camera shy), but at least just include some contest-specific message.
@residue: I like this idea as well. The game could be: http://videosift.com/crossword maybe.
@dag: I'm in love with the idea of trying out the hidden queue submitter idea, contest or no contest. And if it's as successful as I'm imagining, perhaps it can be the permanent modification.

Herman Cain Won Faux News GOP Primary Debate?
>> ^Crosswords:
Is that Lincoln on one side of the room and Regan on the other? One man the current republican party shares almost nothing with except for being in the same party and the other a man they remember as much greater than he actually was. Oh wait I see, its an analogy between Ron Paul and Herman Cain.
Actually, I'd argue that Lincoln is a great representational embodiment of the Republican Party. In fact, Dubya Bush and Lincoln shared a lot of the same traits. For one, they both suspended habeas corpus. Lincoln also imprisoned thousands of citizens without due process, and Bush imprisoned detainees in Gitmo in the same way.
In that way, Lincoln and Bush and Obama are all cut from the same cloth.

Part of the problem is often the face of Mexican nationality in the US isn't the successful educated Mexican's, its the day laborers. Hired as skilled labor, but largely unskilled and paid next to nothing, often below legal limits if they're undocumented. They tend to do a shit job, cutting corners and generally not caring about the quality of work they do and trying to communicate with them through the language barrier is frustrating as all get out. Of course this only happens because companies, and it seems people as a whole, prefer cheap labor over quality labor. They only exist because the market for that kind of labor is huge, so large I think its degraded the quality of labor overall. But people don't make that connection, they see bad work being done by low paid unskilled labor who happen to be Mexicans thus Mexicans are dirty and lazy. The real connection should be that builders and contractors are greedy shysters.
>> ^bareboards2:
One pride movement that is starting, quietly, is the idea of Mexican Pride. I have only seen this a couple of places, and I am cheering it on.
Unfortunately, in America, the very word "Mexican" carries with it the echo of the phrase "dirty Mexican" -- one of the reasons we use back away to be "nice" and say Hispanic/Latino/Latina, when someone is clearly Mexican.
"Nice" becomes really ugly, when the word Mexican should be a descriptive word and not pejorative just by itself.
There are some Mexicans out there who are sick of it, and are starting to reclaim their national identity.
I had never thought of it this way, until I heard this famous actor interviewed (do wish I could remember who it was -- Salma Hayek? Someone smart and beautiful, I remember that.)
I have been trying to use the word Mexican ever since, and have screwed up, because it turns out I can't tell Guatamalen from Brazilian, so I end up insulting folks anyway. But I'm trying.
Mexican. Mexican. Mexican.
Maybe that was your experience with day laborers but, it is not representative of all day laborers or people of Mexican nationality (but, Spanish as far as their race). I have worked with and hired transitory day laborers and most of them do a better job and work just as hard (if not harder) than any permanent (usually unionized) worker.
And as for hiring them, they were paid well over the average wage of most American workers. They were paid beforehand and proceeded to work quickly and efficiently. The money they make in the U.S. is worth so much more in their country. THAT'S why they're willing to work for lower wages than most Americans. I currently work with a guy that said the money he makes in 2 hours at his job here in the U.S. would last a week in El Salvador.
The market wouldn't exist if people were unhappy with the end product. So, to say that their work doesn't meet quality standards doesn't make much sense. If they were producing inferior products nobody would be hiring them.
