Behold The Majesty of Simcity GlassBox Simulation

SeesThruYou says...

HOLY SHIT! What IS that??? Is.. is that a bug?? A computer game... with a real BUG?! OMFG... this has got to be a FIRST! I mean, I've been gaming for nearly 30 years and I've owned thousands of titles, but I don't know if I've EVER seen one with a REAL bug before!!!!!!!

This is monumental! This is... EPIC! This is....

...stupid.

So, you found a bug in SimCity. Whoop-de-freakin-do. Just because of all the media sensation surrounding the failed launch, this otherwise simple (yet amusing) bug is being hailed as some kind of incredible evidence that the Glassbox engine is somehow complete crap, right? Oh, okay, I get it now.

Yes, no OTHER developer has ever released bugs in their games. Yes, ooooh, let's all marvel at the bug that makes Sims walk around in circles under some special circumstances that are not even revealed to the rest of us. I play SimCity, and I play it a lot. I've never seen this happen. Not saying it's rigged, or that it doesn't happen to other players or anything, but after nearly 100 hours of playing and a dozen or so cities built, I've never seen this bug myself. Just sayin'.

Is Someone Playing GTA More Likely To Kill People?

bacall says...

Violent crime has dropped in the past ten years, while violent video games have become more popular. No connection, though you could argue they lower crime.

I'd also like to point out that while I grew up playing computer games and watching violent movies. My Mom and Dad grew up on farms slaughtering animals for food. What is more violent, playing computer games or hanging a live pig upside down by its feet slitting its throat to bleed it out?

Eric Clapton -Wonderful Tonight By Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Like DOOM (my favorite computer game series) and The Scorpion King (poor ants)?

Stormsinger said:

I'd maybe, be faintly interested in anything to do with professional wrestling, if the acting were ever better than fifth graders.

Johnson does a decent job in his movies...at least as well as John Wayne ever did. He seems to only have one character in his repertoire...likely his own, but he does do that one role well. However, he apparently -can- sing a decent tune. Surprise!

Even when it comes to his movies, I only watch because my wife makes me.

Why I Am Not an Atheist

messenger says...

He was doing OK for 30 minutes or so until he tried to blame "the most bloody century in history" on atheism, I'm assuming, because of their coincidence. Argument from coincidence means nothing, especially considering all the wars that have been waged in the name of one religion or another. My guess is our increased population and increased killing technology account for why we are able to kill more people.

With his attack on the student who insisted, "Everything is meaningless", he's committing the common error of conflating two different meanings of the same word. The student wasn't saying, "There is no such thing such that it has meaning, including this statement." He was agreeing that there is no teleological reason for our existence. Zacharias twisted his words with double meanings.

His insight about emptiness coming from indulgence in pleasure and the disappointment after is accurate, as long as the pleasure being indulged in isn't self-fulfilling. When I work hard to prepare something that will make others happy, I get immense pleasure before, during and after. It's only when I'm focusing on mundane things like computer games or (sorry y'al) the Sift that I feel pleasure during, but little pleasure after.

Also, people like working towards things. If you think that you're going to be happier once you reach a goal, you're wrong. But if you think you're going to be happier while you're reaching goals, you'll probably be right. If you'd asked Boris Becker how he felt after his first championship, he might have felt better. After that he realized that there was nowhere else for him to go. Sounds like he was also particularly prone to depression on top of that, though I know nothing of him.

Further, all these arguments from the Hong Kong tycoon to Becker to Hitler are anecdotal, and not statistically significant. None demonstrate anything except that it's possible for a person to reach material goals and not be happy. If they were conclusive, then by the same token one would only need to find a single suicidal believer to disprove religion from the other side. Statistics showing significantly less depression among religious people than non-believers would be meaningful, and they may exist. But they still wouldn't demonstrate lack of faith to be a wrong position, just a less advantageous one.

59:50 Does Zacharias think only religious people find meaning in their children? 1:01:00 Or that religious people don't try and find happiness in fame and wealth?

His final argument about being in error about the Christian religion as opposed to being in error about atheism overlooks all the evil things people are capable of only through justification by religion.

Child Flips Out When Computer & Videogames are Taken Away

Sagemind says...

OK,

So I don't promote or tolerate these kind of tantrums -at all.
But that being said. I really feel bad for this kid.

It seems kids are beginning with computers from the time they learn to click the mouse. It's what they know as a constant reality in their world. They are are being raised on it - it's like air. Their brains are being programed to exist almost symbiotically with the computer. When they are left unchecked, separating them can be mentally traumatic for them.

This kid is fairly young. It's almost like it's an animal response. It's up to parents to keep this type of tool from kids and monitor it's use. It's harder than it looks. I know If I separated my child from his computer, he wouldn't act like this, but I interact with him and we set limits on a regular basis. Now if I flat, went in and deleted his user ID and everything he had, ya, he'd be undeniably upset. Wouldn't you?

Only you and I have relationships outside of the computer world (I hope) so we all have something to fall back on partly because some of us remember not having the computer to start with.

Again, I don't condone the reaction, but I do understand it and I can't help blaming the world around us for the situation we are in. Computer games and websites are, in their design, addictive, they are meant to be, that's how they are designed. That's how they make their money.

It's not the child's responsibility to separate and educate himself against the onslaught of techno. His parents, his family, teachers and friends should get in on the solution.Us parents are a huge part of the problem. Kids don't even go outside to play anymore unless the parents set up a "Play Date" or a "Hang Out". Remember when we used to go outside and just knock on a door and say can Johny come out and play?" That doesn't happen any more. Kids just sit there on the computer waiting for the parents to initiate play time.

OK, I'll end now, but you see my point right...??

Harrison Ford Watches Indy For The First Time

Zawash says...

The Last Crusade - best Movie + Computer Game combo ever!

Anyhow:
What would have made this clip really epic is if he had bad things to say about Uncharted too, and it would all be cut in context of the "Crystal Skull" thingy that some (fools) claim to be an Indy movie.

There are Three movies made featuring Indiana Jones, and Two featuring Mad Max.

Caine's Arcade - Best Kids Arcade Story Ever

I did the same thing with a classmate around 2nd grade. We made "computer games" by drawing on cards and taping them to the "screen" and then trading them. Can't figure out why no one else wanted in on that action. What's so great about kick ball anyway?>> ^ant:
>> ^TheSluiceGate:
I used to make little "pinball" machines at his age, with box-tops, elastics, pencils and marbles. But this kid is an imagination god!

When I was in fourth grade, I made a computer out of cardboard. It was based on my real Apple //c.

I used to sew black ninja-suits for my TMNT figures.

If Angry Birds were an 1980's/80's home computer game.

>> ^ForgedReality:

I have Angry Birds original, Angry Birds Rio (ad-free), Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Space all on my phone. All were free. Dunno why you'd pay for something like this that you only play occasionally and that is easily ad-blocked.

How did you get them for free assuming legally?

Gorgeous Skyrim timelapse by a professional photographer

Somebody want to explain to me how making a video of a computer game requires a photographer? Who gives a shit, anybody can take a video like this, kudos to the game developers, I don't give a crap about the "photographer" that took this.

Skyrim - Do NOT Mess With Giants

AeroMechanical says...

>> ^dag:

I have to admit - this does look pretty fun.

I have to recommend against it. I've always liked computer games, but I don't generally spend a lot of time playing them--maybe an hour or two a week. However, since I bought Skyrim on Friday, I've played it for nearly 30 hours without even the slightest inkling of how much time had passed, and I'm not even remotely close to completing it.

That can't be healthy.

Is it that difficult to pay attention? I realize such a compilation could be made with any country's drivers...and the question stands.

To be a safe driver you simply have to be good a measuring risks. Most people are not, partially because they have no idea of the forces being applied to a moving vehicle.
And computer games of course, you will immediately run into someone after you played one of these racing games. Google that shit!
