How ants work - A Tribute to ant.

wazant says...

Great post--ants are flippin' fascinating. This is much better than the flashier docs I've seen from Discovery(TM) or whatever, with their time-wasting scary music and repetitive computer animations.

Still, that's one patient woman we see here.

I'm really impressed by the animation on the juggler. Especially the little extra kick he gives right before he does his backflip. It almost looks as good as motion capture just for a moment.

Yeah SuperSaiyan I'm pretty sure back in these days you didn't get to see your animation in playback until you printed each frame one at a time, then scanned each printed frame one at a time through an optical printer onto a film reel.

Computer models back then were created through direct input of co-ordinate mapping in worldspace, meaning the "artists" would type in the 3-axis co-ordinate of each vertex in the geometry without seeing what it looked like.

After modelling was complete, animation worked the same way... animators would figure out the keyframes by timelining things on paper and with maquettes and stopwatches. Then they'd manually type in the position changes, frame-by-frame... there were no motion paths or CG tweens back then. That's why in Tron the computer animation basically conists of statuelike, singular objects sliding around in space, except for some of the CG tanks, which have a 1-degree of motion turret. It was way too much work to have articulated CG characters.

Well, I think the trolly problem is perfect for engineering. It's specifically addressed in engineering ethics. People are happier to use technology to kill. It's technology relevant. It's a moral dilemma, but one with a technological context. To me, that's one of the points of it being harder to push a person that a button. But it's your video, and I wouldn't overrule you. (I never took anything out of any channel so I could put it in engineering, but there was plenty of room in the trolly video).

I have a special button to throw things OUT of my channel, but none to put it in that I know of.

All those sound engineering relevant to me. I just got tired of puting htings in...

And thanks for the congrat.

I took the trolley problem vid out of engineering since it doesn't really have any engineering connection. There's not even supposed to be one on the train. Seriously, though, it's a moral dilemma question in the context of a psychology experiment.

I've added some others though - the killacycle vid, the Kurzweil TED talk, and the space shuttle take-off. Obviously, if they don't belong, go ahead and knock them out.

There's a few others I wasn't sure about:

Coyote definitely knows the agony of engineering
Pinky's discussion of Edison and AC (engineering ethics?)
cool software engineering in the SIGGRAPH clip

Oh, and I think there's supposed to be a special button for channel owners to include/exclude vids from their channel, without having to use an invocation.

Congrats on the diamond and your new channel! It definitely fills the void left when the tech collective went away.

That was pretty damn good. Liked the song, the animation, and the message.

Computer animation has come a really long way in a fairly short amount of time.

Wonder what the heck they'll have in 2013?

I have a Computer Animation degree so I'll help out. What they teach you is VERY limited. You can learn plenty of principals, but animation basically comes down to moving around points, recording their position, and doing it again.

To delve into the VERY complex apps like Maya, or 3DStudio takes a lot of extra time, thats hard to fit into a classroom curiculam.

My guess is he took the points from the notes he took, and was so fed up with his inept teacher he decided to show it off.
